—After watching Starship Troopers with friend Jeff Oberst Monday, Adam Buck vowed never to watch another science-fiction film with the Rice University physics professor. "First, he spends 20 minutes telling me how bugs could never get that big because of the way they breathe," said Buck, 28. "Then he goes off on how faster-than-light-speed travel isn't physically possible." Buck said the evening was even less enjoyable than the time they watched Back To The Future together.

:) Heh, relentless interruptions can make good movies awful, so watching Starship Troopers like that must have been absolute hell.

I hate people like that. Even the most scientifically illiterate movie can be good as long as it has a decent plot (Starship Troopers does not fall into this category).

As long as they do not PRETEND to be scientifically literate. I actually enjoyed the little-watched and critically lambasted "Treasure Planet" even though it shit all over science, because it made no effort whatsoever. But when Star Trek regales you with techno-bullshit, it annoys the hell out of me. Similarly, when "Armageddon" describes a pseudo-realistic scenario, implies NASA participation, and bases its entire plot upon one of the dumbest fucking ideas to ever come down the pipe, I get pissed off.

Just come back from watching Wrath of Khan (haven't seen in ages) and most of the sci-fi club take the piss out of things, y'know, where did the star come from for the Genesis planet and how does perspex stop radiation and why the hell does it have a revolving door.

Know what I think?

Fuck it, so long as people take it as fiction then that's alright, like has been said, when people believe the stuff that isn't even theoretically possible in the future that pisses me off. I just switch my science part of the brain off and enjoy it.

Afterall, you may as well nitpick every film or programme then for being a tad unrealistic from cop shows to the super unrealistic soaps.

I thought Armageddon was a pretty entertaining movie. I am also aware it was filled with sci-fi bullshit. But how could we avoid the scenario depicted on that flick? I do realize this is off topic, but it would be interesting to explore the possibilities. I heard that focusing sunlight on the asteroid to gently push it off course. What Would Wong Do? (Hey! that could be our motto! Instead of WWJD, WWWD!!!!!)

That's why it's referred to as science fiction.

To be fair, sci-fi usually has some crdibility, 2001 for instance was pretty much real other than the monoliths. Games like I-War use Newtonian mechanics, hell, Star Wars has fusion powerplants.

All that can be done, eventually. Who knows. But some things will never happen, e.g. flying into a black hole, having bugs the size of BMWs and weapons that blow holes in planets yet are the size of rifles.

If it was all technically doable... hell, if the plot was totally realistic then the thing would suck. Bond would be dead from STDs, Kirk would have been vaped by Khan and Luke wouldn't be around for the EU.

And, sadly, those aren't even the worst aspects of the film. :(
