Yes, if by "thought" you meant "hoped". :)

Yes, if by "different" you meant "the same, but easier" :P

Hmm, what were Lucas' own reasons?
"..history has shown the best defense against heavy cavalry are pikemen, so aircraft should mount lances on their noses and fly in tight squares to fend off bombers". - RedImperator

"ha ha, raping puppies is FUN!" - Johonebesus

"It would just be Unicron with pew pew instead of nom nom". - Vendetta, explaining his justified disinterest in the idea of the movie Allspark affecting the Death Star

"Because it looks cool."

That's the explanation.

"Because it looks cool." That's the explanation. Plus it means that you can have your hero directly doing something extraordinary, rather than just being another member of a 5,000 strong crew.

Because they did it in WW2 is the exact rationale. Needless to say, Star Wars is almost sci-fi fantasy. What is the excuse of grim-dark types?

Nope. I assumed it was Horus Heresy-related as well ;) .
I didn't until I read about Humanity exterminating foul Xenos and spreading the Imperium of Man to new planets.
Then I saw the trailer.

What grim-dark types? B5 and SG-1 were not grim-dark, just slightly less fantasy oriented than Star Wars. The latter did not have that much fighter action in any case. The excuse of nBSG is oBSG. Or are you referring to the "Battle of Terra"? Is it supposed to be grim-dark?

Well, there was S:AAB, which would perhaps qualify as grim-dark. It had the same excuse as Star Wars. Dogfights are just so cool. Even though they were quite rare in WW2 already.

Battle of Terra and Battlestar Galactica- you can't get more grim than "humanity is almost extinct".

Despite the seemingly desperate background setting, the original BSG is about as grim-dark as Beverly Hills 90210. Or its immediate successor, the original Knight Rider.

Doesn't count, since as far as I know, there are no 40k movies or TV series.

Hadn't realised we were talking just about movies or TV. In that case I'll agree.
