well the review itself indicates the ship is "run down". its entirely possible the tech to terrafrom a living planet is different from maintianing atmosphere in a metal spaceship

The actual reasons for the use of fighters is not important and let's face it, the reason invented by Lucas himself did not really make much sense either.

I didn't until I read about Humanity exterminating foul Xenos and spreading the Imperium of Man to new planets.
Then I saw the trailer.

What grim-dark types? B5 and SG-1 were not grim-dark, just slightly less fantasy oriented than Star Wars. The latter did not have that much fighter action in any case. The excuse of nBSG is oBSG. Or are you referring to the "Battle of Terra"? Is it supposed to be grim-dark?

Well, there was S:AAB, which would perhaps qualify as grim-dark. It had the same excuse as Star Wars. Dogfights are just so cool. Even though they were quite rare in WW2 already.

Despite the seemingly desperate background setting, the original BSG is about as grim-dark as Beverly Hills 90210. Or its immediate successor, the original Knight Rider.
