It's a ghastly topic - I am an animal lover, and this kind of thing makes me want to see the perpetrator suffer in the same way.

I sometimes think that people should have an "exam" to show that they are the appropriate type for animal ownership.

just to play devils advocate, the dog would probably have been put down anyway because it was too hostile, and she said she drove slowly (supposedly). granted, she could have called the shelter, but it wasnt her fault the dog didnt walk.

She is 74 years old. It could just be an odd case of severe senility. I mean, she could have just called the shelter, but I don't think the woman needs to be hanged, as you were suggesting....

If she did`nt want the dog anymore she should have given it to someone else or ask a friend to shoot it. it would have been less cruel.

I hate to make anybody feel worse, but these kinds of accidents are more common than you think. I even babysat for somebody who did it. Last week a guy kept his three-year-old in the back seat of the car in sub-zero temperatures while he went to play the slots in a casino. Dozens of kids and pets die of heat exhaustion being left in cars during the summer. When you leave morons in charge of the lives of others, you're going to be dealing with people who don't deserve the responsibility.

If thats the case we should start screening people to see if they are fit to take care of a baby or a dog.

She said the dog was resisting what did she think he would have simply walked behind the car, and about driving slow how slow was it 40 mph.

it´s probable that she thought just that. and after starting the car she completely forgot about the dog and dragged it around for a full week before remembering it and taking it to the dog pound.

hell do i know what she thought. you must consider her age though. it´s not that unlikely that she had no clue what the hell she was doing.

I too am an animal lover, I have 7 cats, and obviously I don't approve of animal cruelty. Though I will say this, if a dog killed one of my cats, it WOULD be killed by my own hands for it, even if it was my family's dog.

Dragging a dog behind a car is totally wrong, and if I saw someone doing it, they would be promptly dealt with by me. Now the only condition that I can see where dragging a dog would be half way acceptable is if it poses a direct threat to the person (and it can be verified of course), in which case you need to deal with the animal, but you certainly don't drive more than 10-15 while headed to the pound. (Btw, a dog can do 17, I've verified this when I have walked the family mutt using my bike, the bugger can actually PULL ME at that speed, and obviously if he starts lagging I slow down)

Here in Florida, shopping centers and stores often have huge signs warning people not to be stupid and leave their children and pets inside the car.

Oh yes, I remember that one quite well. It happened in Santa Cruz, IIRC. Miserable son of a bitch.

Another particularly cruel incident happened in San Jose last year. A man and a woman got in a car accident and pulled off to the left shoulder on US-101. They started arguing and the man reached in the woman's car, pulled out her poodle, and threw it into traffic. It got squished by a car doing about 80 mph. I'm happy to say that the bastard had his day in court and is now wearing orange.
