History website recommendations

Post by ray245 »

I thought that this might be a useful topic for the forum members here. While the Internet is full of information, there are relatively few reliable sources we can trust. The few history websites that does not degenerate into pesudo-history and tried to support how History is being portrayed by Hollywood, and bring us opinions that is not based on a black and white view in regards to what has happened in the past.

Which is why I hope to create this topic and share with everyone what websites do I find is reliable to a reasonable extend.

China History forum: One of the largest English language forums that aims to discuss and provide useful information on the Internet. With a community from history-bluff to people with a degree all aiming to provide archeological findings, accurate drawings of armours in the past and a translation of numerous Historical sources into the English language, it is the place you want to start in regards to Chinese History if you are unable to read Chinese or prefer to read about Chinese history in English.

De Imperatoribus Romanis: One of the more useful encyclopedia website concerning the Roman Empire that was recommended to me by Thanas. It does provide a reasonable amount of information concerning the Empire in the 3rd century AD.

Europa Barbarorum: Say what you want about a mod of Rome total war, but this site certainly provides us with many information about the Western world as a whole during the classical age. From information concerning the Gauls to information concerning the Partians, it is a useful place to allow us to learn more about history.

A good source of information on U-Boat warfare, including profiles for nearly every ship class which fought in the Atlantic on the Allied and Axis sides ; Bios for commanders, articles on WWII submarine warfare, lists of patrols and convoy battles, tables and statistics. Good for initial research into the topic and later references.

It suddenly struck me that that tiny pea, pretty and blue, was the Earth. I put up my thumb and shut one eye, and my thumb blotted out the planet Earth. I didn't feel like a giant. I felt very, very small.

The Internet Medieval Sourcebook is an excellent repository of primary sources for those without access to JSTOR.

A great website about the World War I (and the propaganda poster section has a few gems in it).
