I think i'm in the endgame, and I have to wonder. Do the optional missions ever stop coming? I'm a bit of a completionist, but this is getting fucking tiresome. I have to run all around the sector like a headless chicken to defend shit, and then when I finally complete an optional mission, two more pop up. Do they ever stop throwing the optional missions at you, or should I just do the main plot ones and finish the game?

Not to my knowledge. I'm not even sure what relevance the 'tyranid infestation' has because I let it fill up and nothing happened (except maybe the 'nids got more powerful but I think that's just what happens when the game tries to balance all those level 20 terminators doing 1500 damage and killing carnifexes in 1 hit). However I'm speculating that not controlling them all at the end of the game may cause the 'lol no campaign completion' problem that many people on Relic forums are experiencing.

Infestation and stragetic holdings affect your campaign score and the level of victory you get at the end of the game.

Also, Primarch level sucks balls........ Even with Iron Halo, I'm still cheesecake. On one hand, its fun to actually LOSE missions because the Carnifex can blow through your squads, as well as its strong enough to ignore aggro and take out the generators. On the other hand, boss fights is now a matter of "Can I stop running around with my FC now?"

Its gets more irritating when the boss is vulnerable to plasma weapons. Since Tarkus is your character more suitable to plasma guns, and your Devastators are literally free food in the boss fight.......... It gets irritating, since I actually mobbed my chars up for ranged combat in the Primarch setting as part of the customisation route, not to mention that it was essential when fighting against orks. But against Eldar or Tyrannids, the Devastators are shit and the scouts/Dev tactic of luring units into heavy weps and suppressing them is gone. Any recommendations for customisation against Tyrannids? I know against Eldar, the key is to get assault infantry and Dreadnoughts, with perhaps some scouts for sniping and demolition. But Tyrannids? Thaddeus is great, in this campaign, I swapped him out for toughness and he's hard to kill in meelee. But he's still vulnerable to being sniped to death. How do you take on Tyrannid swarms?

So, get the game if you're a Wh40k fan. If you are, the game ROCKS. The feel of invinicibe space marines, Fear incarnate and the like........ god. Bring back the good old days when 5 space marines would wipe out 20 orks in 4 turns:D

They're not invincible at all. The fan hypnosis on the game is hilarious; you're a single troopship (not a battle barge) and you go through literally HUNDREDS of space marines on captain and you guys go down like punks to all kinds of shit. If they're 'invincble' in any way it's because ranged combat is so totally useless - very few units can beat a space marine in melee so FC + assault marines = lol I won. That's Relic failing at balancing, that's all.

About the only universe stuff I noticed was shuriken weapons killing you way faster than anything else. The tyranids are a joke, the orks are no threat outside tanks and lascannon guys, etc. Vs tyranids just use the upgraded dreadnought splat to kill everything that isn't a synapse and finish the rest off with assault and commander. Only carnifexes are really a threat, and devastators with missiles/plasma cannons turn them inside out just fine.

The idea that the game requires any kind of 'tactics' is bizarre. Equip best armour for knockback/suppression resists and melee bonuses, kill everyone. It's nowhere near as complex as CoH. Where'd that rubble go? No cover for you!

? My first run through was sargaent, and they were invinicible even in ranged combat. Meelee was fun, but ranged tactical and devs had their use. Primarch on the other hand............................ I can't even advance tactical marines with tac advance up against ranged units without losing them.

Shrugs. On sarge level, there wasn't a need for tactics. Indeed, using tactics= wasting time for the stars.
Primarch is more of microing than actual tactics, even against normal troops, so I don't disagree there. However, it seems there is more "need" of careful selection of troops as well as customisation so you won't drown under.

Uh, champ, ranged combat remains useless on captain. That's why I said 'ranged combat is so totally useless'. I never used tactical again after the dread showed up because the squad mooks are near-worthless (they inherit none of the equipment or stat boosts) so contribute near-zero and die at the drop of a hate. The devastators are the best example of this - who cares if the two heavy bolter idiots are dead, if Avitus is on his feet and has a missile launcher the squad is delivering 90% of it's dps.

Primarch and captain aren't hard because you 'need tactics', they're hard because Relic are cheap and just multiplied enemy health and damage by 5 to make it seem harder. Even on captain I didn't notice any real need for specific resists or attack types - certainly nothing like you see in games like Diablo - but I can imagine if they multiply the hitpoints by 5 again you'd need it. The only real damage-type thing I noticed was the dread being eaten alive by lascannons, but that's when you tell Thaddeus to 'go kill everyone over here instantly'. If your force commander has a power fist and is immune to knockback he just needs a bit of micro to kill anything. Thank Relic the medpacks aren't automatically used, I love micro!

Shrugs. As I said, the RP fun aspect was gained from the Sarge level, bringing back memories of how tough and invinicible a well played marine squad was on the Tabletop. Your ranged could tear them up and if you wish to, go into meelee to finish things off, charge and annihialate them with a mixture of range and meelee, or rely entirely on how uber your units were in combat. Again, fun as in WH40k fan fun, not game fun.

I never claimed that Primarch was hard because you need "tactics". I'm asking, how do you guys customise your squads and wargear to take out Tyrannids on Primarch level for best munchie effects.
No offence, the Dread is overpowered with said assault cannon, but even it isn't enough kill when you're dropped into the middle of the camp and the swarms are infesting you.

You mean the RP experience you made up and is no way generated in the game? I was pretty disappointed in the lack of grimdark, the lack of real insight into the universe, and the hilarious tyranid 'brain ship' plot contrivance. What you said was 'I like it because it was fucking easy and I killed everyone'; that's not 'role playing' that's 'game balance is broken'. For a laugh compare hitpoints - a termagant blob has about SIX THOUSAND HITPOINTS and my FC can kill them in two hits, and he's got 700 hitpoints but can take fire for 5-6 termagant blobs and barely feel it. The damage mechanics are fucking horrible.

And I'm never playing that fucking game again because I finished it and it glitched on me. I'm sure as fuck not playing on 'even more everyone died to one attack' primarch level. I actually found the dread pretty terrible with the assault cannon, which may just have been my loot drops, but charge + upgraded smash = literally everyone in the centre of the screen is dead and it recharges in about four seconds. Better than the impossible to aim vs moving targets, takes ages and needs upgrade to not such dakka dakka attack. Remember, you can only equip one arm at a time because... um... Relic can't balance a game for shit.

NERD POST - Since I imagine Relic will eventually fix the campaign-end bugs, but I don't have a pre-endgame save anymore, could one of you guys mail me your usable save? They're only about 200kb.

The plot is as cheap as the effort at balancing BTW, its recycled, fairly badly, from a fairly middling grade 40k novel. Most of it is bullshit inuniverse as well, and as a giant background Nerd, most of the Nid weapons are generic "spooge" guns, totally neglecting a chance to use some of the more interesting toys in imaginative ways.

I think i'm in the endgame, and I have to wonder. Do the optional missions ever stop coming? I'm a bit of a completionist, but this is getting fucking tiresome. Not as far as I can tell, I played until I got the toys I wanted, then finished the game.

Just play until you've hit the top rank, then do the final mission. Beyond that (and perhaps getting more gear / XP) there's no point to those final extra missions.

Decided to not let you play? what the hell?

I've taken out all the bosses, so the only things i'm getting is the defend missions. are you saying that there's a campaign glitch that forces you to stop playing at some point?

When I did the final mission it only left me with the campaign complete save. BCG tells me he's got an autosave before he started that mission as well as this complete save, but I don't.

Also, BCG, predictably the save you gave me doesn't work; it's probably locked profile-wise. Thanks though. :)

I'm confused. Of course the campaign would end when you finish the final story mission. are you saying it doesn't let you go back and replay any of the levels or anything? that kinda sucks.

Yeah. The only thing in my campaign list is the 'LOL CAMPAIGN COMPLETE LOOK AT YOUR STATS' one. To get more points I'd have to start again from the beginning and fuck that. Not like you get the campaign complete achievements anyway.

Actually Stark, Relic plan on doing more DLC expansions for the SP campaign, so that completed campaign file will be actually useful for something. Think finishing Baldur's Gate then being able to import your party to Baldur's Gate 2.

The meat of DoWII is in the MP, not the SP. The "no more base building" gameplay is...different. I personally think it takes away the macromanagement aspect of your typical RTS and doesn't replace it with anything, but that's just my opinion. At the moment everybody's screaming about Tyranid IMBA, but given Relic's patching tendancies, they'll get hit hard with the nerf bat in the next patch and another race will get bumped up.

MP games are also quick as lightning too, I haven't had one last more than 20min, regardless if it's 1v1 or 3v3.
I know there is a method, but all I see is the madness.

I found the MP pretty terrible; it's still the rushtastic micro silliness of DoW with only a superficial nod to CoH, and is so unlike the SP game that it's almost a standalone game.

It's amusing that people think units-only play is 'new' or 'interesting' and that 20m games are 'fast'. It's like the RTS genre grew up and nobody noticed. :)

They've already got some mods out for the game. Found one here that bumps up the squad sizes, equipment of the squads, adds vehicle drops to the campaign, ect. Also boosts the strength of the enemies a bit as well, so the zerg rush tyranid swarm is really a swarm. Have to check, but I think it also works on the co-op campaign and maybe the multi as well.

What exactly did Relic do to piss off the modders? That company always seemed to be so willing to work with its fanbase, well, at least in terms of modding. I'm not sure how they are in terms of listening to them. Anyway, I'm glad that hasn't stopped people from modding because I do like a higher unit-cap, among other things (like new units). Too few combatants doesn't seem to fit with the fluff version of 40k that I know although I'm sure that would be different if I had been a fan of the table top game first.

A mod where the Marine's numbers were specifically kept low versus everybody else, with the cover options of CoH though, would be pretty neat but I don't think that's possible.

Relic didn't want modders changing the single player campaign to preserve the experience or something like that. Recently though it seems more like they're preparing modding tools for eventual release.
