World in Conflict: Soviet Assault. A waste of money
What a Fraking waste of money. The multiplayer content was released for free to anyone with the original game. The only thing you get from the thing is 6 extra missions that are integrated into the original game. And you have to pay $30 to purchase the Complete Edition of WiC to get 6 extra fucking missions. There is no option to purchase just the expansion. It seems they decided to do away with the expansion and are just selling the whole thing. If you don't have WiC, this is an ok option. If you have WiC, don't even bother. Its a waste of money.

Uh, yeah, everyone knew this months ago. It was always a daft mission-pack. The 1.10 patch was like 960mb, and it even changes the name of the game to 'WiC Soviet Assault'.
Re: World in Conflict: Soviet Assault. A waste of money
Months ago I didn't know they had done away with the expansion and consolidated into a combined release.

True... I was half-planning on buying it myself, but I'm pretty sure they cancelled the separate thing at the same time as the 360 version.

Everyone was pretty sure Massive was going to *die* around Fall 08. I'm amazed they ever got around to releasing it.
Best care anywhere.
Re: World in Conflict: Soviet Assault. A waste of money
It's worth pulling the patch down, they've ironed out some good stuff. Highpoint is that carpet bombing is now more armour-piercing and has a bigger radius... so... nukes are even dumber now. The engine is tweaked too, I get significantly better perforamnce.
Re: World in Conflict: Soviet Assault. A waste of money
You don't get it, nukes aren't there cause they're practical, not are they particularly useful. Nukes are there as a "Because I can" move, and that mushroom cloud is very good looking.

I thought the original game was a waste of money, so that is nothing new.

What? No base building made you sad?

Re: World in Conflict: Soviet Assault. A waste of money
Nah. Arcadeness of combat made me sad.
It was probably the "real war" hype that I was seeing everywhere elevated my expectations. I was expecting to see a fairly realistic RTS in which the tanks for example take different amounts of damage when engaged from different sides.
Instead I got another off the mill uncreative RTS in which the only innovation was the lack of base building. I think that the devs need to try harder and not just say "lol no base building we are innovative omg" and call it a day.

Uh... there is a difference in damage depending on which facing you engage armor. That's part of the whole reason why there's a way to force your tanks to move backward.

Really? I didn't notice that. And in my time I was playing the game I didn't find it to be really important. And I finished the game.Beowulf wrote:Uh... there is a difference in damage depending on which facing you engage armor. My point is I was expecting something like Operation Flashpoint RTS.

The single-player was just tacked on for shits and giggles. The game is multiplayer, one of the more cerebral ones around at that. Just because the mechanics seem simplistic at first glance doesn't make it "arcadey", it's actually very sophisticated if you really dig into the multiplayer.

Re: World in Conflict: Soviet Assault. A waste of money
Then you're an idiot. There was no sort of indication that the game would be like that at all, past the common theme of "late 80s fighting between NATO and Russia."Tolya wrote:Really? Don be trolled by this guy. The SP is silly, but they straight out tell you about facings and on anything but easy it extremely obvious. If he finished the game without noticing AT squads suck vs heavy tanks from the front he's just a retard.
The kind of retard who a) thinks no bases is innovative and b) thinks WiC has no other noteworthy features. . Should I wait for him to bleat 'omg my opi ion' before I point out everything he's said about WiC so far is wrong?

I was able to purchase just the expansion, there was also the "Complete Set" or "Complete Series" box as well. Are you sure the place you bought it from hadn't just sold out of the expansion only box?Alyeska wrote:There is no option to purchase just the expansion. EDIT: Just to clarify the box I bought also had "Expansion Only, requires original game" written on it.

You might have the opportunity down in Australia. I tried searching every location locally and no one has it or even listed as orderable in their databases. Online retailers don't even have it.

No option for expansion only in the UK either.

Apparently EB sells it for download in the US separately. It's available, all right, it's on their website. THE INTERNET CAN'T LIE.

Well some people aren't always that keen on purely digital downloads, but I can't say I've even seen that option in the UK, its the complete boxed edition or nothing.

Wow. Who would have thought that AUSTRALIA would have better options for a video game.
Is that even possible?

Soviet Assault is worthless.
I immediately unlocked all maps and played the Russian campaign start to finish. Boy, that was boring as hell, and only the first mission gave a sense of large-scale fighting... I hope we'll see some good mods.
