SiegeTank wrote:The president leaned ever so slightly forward, something an astute observer would take as an obvious sign of interest. “I most definitely am”, he said and put down his glass. “That is to say, I know people who will be. Some of my former colleagues with Standard Oil tell me that their compounds are growing restless, seeing as there isn’t much in the way of entertainment for the engineers and drillers in Arabia.” Sidney smirked. “The Caliphate is not exactly Disneyland, is it? We’d be more than happy to help do something about that.”
The Caliphate welcomes investments, though that plot of land I'm thinking of developing is still Byzantine. But we are interested in investors who might be willing to come set up shop in that area. All that sand and sun will do anyone good. As for the Syrians themselves have developed their own indigenous industries over the last 50 years and are quite respectable, though they are attempting set up their own indigenous product R&D capabilities and service industry. Quite a bit of services have been outsourced to them.
He picked his glass again and emptied it in one gulp. Then he gave the Emperor a calculating look. “Though I’d like to know who else could potentially get involved, I mean apart from Universal Construction and the usual suspects. So tell me worshipfulness”, he continued with a hint of a smile. “What kinds of businesses would this resort city harbour? I’m told the Arabians are kind of… touchy, when it comes to casinos and movie theatres and the, ah, seedier forms of entertainment that we in San Dorado take for granted.”
"The Syrians these days are a lot more secular than they were 50 years ago, largely thanks to the efforts of the current and last Sultan. Not all of them are from the same stripes, though there are of course the usual religious fanatics. But the police will keep things in line. That much you can be assured. So long as this resort city is far enough from Mecca and Medina, it should be fine. Mecca and Medina are on the other side of the Arabian peninsular anyhow."
Sidney sighed. “I know, I know. You’re right, but the idea is simply depressing.” He pensively looked at Shroom, then turned his gaze back to Heraclius. “The PM here informed me of what transpired… Ah, before. So yes. Anyway…”

The president steepled his fingers. “We can facilitate a base for you at the Navalopolis facility near Fallston. The place is two naval stations really, an older Coilerburg navy harbour, and a whole new set of docks, warehouses and quays a good two dozen miles down the coast that then-president Stone ordered built to house the new ships his government had ordered from Byzantium.”

Sidney poured himself and the others a new round of wine. “Of course they never got around to using the expansion. If you guys decide to take it you’ll save us the trouble of having to find a good use for the place. It’s bound to be a bit ramshackle from neglect, and you might have to expand it a little further if you want to accommodate your fancy Kirovs and supercarriers, but it’s bound to be up and running faster than a whole new base.” He smiled. “Of course it also means our own ships will sortie just a few miles from yours, but I’m sure that won’t be too much of a bother.”

“As for terms, let’s say standard renewable twenty-year lease”, the president counted on his fingers. “The local government will be responsible for external security, CATO handles internal base security, the NFT will require an on-base liaison office to ensure smooth communications, and all data from the facility’s radar installation will be fully shared. CATO will agree not to conduct war or warlike operations from the base without our express permission. In case of a war with the MESS the NFT will temporarily assume responsibility for the base until the cessation of hostilities, but during that period CATO vessels will be able to refuel at the facility. Did I miss anything?”

Then he knowingly looked Heraclius in the eye. “Oh, and before I forget”, he continued slyly. “The prime minister here told me he was already thinking up a name for the place. I thought you might want to know and perhaps, ah, head him off?” He winked, and took another sip of the snake wine.
"Hmm... Sounds like a fair .. deal to me. I would also recommend some degree of interaction between the FTO troops and CATO troops. Helps to.. smooth things a little. As for the base, I can't really think of any name off hand, but Fortress Frequesue sounds.. appropriate."

The Floating Pagoda

Prime Minister Shroom was busy watching the telescreens around them, watching the fine Tian Xian entertainment portrayed within their fine high-definition screens. It was a spectacle of badly-dubbed really bad wire kung-fu. Possibly opium-addicted Tian Xiamen whose mouths did not match the Shroomish coming out of em, taking to the skies to perform obscene aerobatic feats of asskickery like bicycle sticks and de-bone palms and dragon dances! The fight choreography was truly intense, captivating to the Prime Minister who was enthralled to see ten minutes of martial artists' faces getting angrier and angrier before the ensuing ten minutes of people getting thrown out of windows.

Eventually, the movie ended and the credits - in indecipherable Tian Xian heiroglyphs (or calligraphy - perhaps Shroom was mixing his Tian Xian with Canissian again) and Shroomanish subtitles - began rolling. The title was revealed as 'EXIT THE DRAGON' and thus the movie ended, and the Prime Minister returned his attention to his two compatriots.

Meanwhile...

Billionaire-playboy Michelangelo MacMillan was busy over at the buffet table. With one hand holding a glass of vodka, he had one less hand to fish for food-plates from the table - which proved to be rather bothersome. The decadent richboy wondered if he would be better suited downing the vodka with one gulp and freeing both hands for food-finding, but then someone got the plate of florn cakes he had his intentions on.

"Hey," he said.

And immediately did a double-take.

Image

"Hey," the pretty woman said right back at him. "I'm sorry, was this your plate?"

"Yeah... sort of... you can have it," Michelangelo conceded and looked at his glass. "I guess I should finish this first. I guess."

"Maybe you should," the woman winked. "Or maybe there's more than enough florn cakes on this plate for just me."

"Maybe," Michelangelo replied, not sure where the conversation was going in part due to his inbreiety. "Oh, how rude of me, Michelangelo MacMillan, Miss...?"

"Congresswoman," the woman answered. "Corporate Congresswoman Cordelia C'oile Cordova, of the Coilerburg Corporatocracy."

Image

"Ah," Mike couldn't help opening his mouth slightly. At the woman's looks, or at the alliteration, he couldn't really tell. Then he bowed at the woman in front of him. "Then, how may I be of your service, Congresswoman?"

Surprisingly, Cordelia performed a mock curtsy and replied without missing a beat, "Perhaps you would like to discuss your recent agreement with my compatriot..."

"Ah, what's his name!" MacMillan half-remembered. "On the..."

"Yes, the new zeppelin and stratellite factory your company intends to build in Coilerburg, along with the new rail network, as part of Shroomania's proposed 'Fungal Foreign Freedom Financing Fund'." Cordelia said, and then held the plate of florn cakes in front of the billionaire playboy. "Over a plate of florn cakes, perhaps?"

"Perhaps," Michelangelo smiled and went with his new Congresswoman lady friend, leaving his glass of vodka on the buffet table. "So, what we plan to do, Miss Congresswoman, is to build some oversized helium tanks and..."

Sidney raised an eyebrow. “I… See. I’ll still send a memo to keep it discreet though. I wouldn’t want to unnecessarily jeopardize our relationship with the Caliphate, and some of our entertainment is quite… Explicit. Secular or not, the Caliphate is not Shroomania. “Oh, I’m sure there’s plenty of other forms of entertainment to be considered”, the president gestured aimlessly. “But we can probably leave it to the entrepreneurs to find them.” I wonder how long it’ll take for someone to come up with palm leaf islands he silently thought. This planet had an eerie knack for coming up with odd copies of his former world like that.

“You have an amusing definition of excellent” snorted Sidney. “But joint exercises sound like a good plan either way. It would be good for Frequesuan troops to get to know their off-continent colleagues a little better. Maybe begin with some naval operations, and move on to manoeuvres in the Coilerburg outback… In a similar vein I expect that just being in the same vicinity would help-- Fallston isn’t that big, after all, and there will be a lot of marines and sailors around. As long as they behave themselves that alone should be enough to eventually wear down the typical Coiler xenophobia.”

I’ll give Willy Bank a call tomorrow and tell him to arrange for the necessary paperwork to pass through Congress as swiftly as possible. Any ideas on what kind of assets you want to station on the base? Because that’ll impact how swiftly we can have the place up and running.”

Heraclius' eyebrows arced and glanced over at Shroom. "That's an interesting observation.. coming from one who hasn't visited the Caliphate before... The Syrians and Persians love their.... horses no doubt, but certainly, not everyone in the Caliphate is a going to walk around with a tudun or go around fully clothed. Members of the middle and the upper class are fairly liberal, and I fail to see why casinos would even spike up unrest. Heck, Antioch in Byzantium is a fairly cosmopolitan city, and it has the largest Muslim population in Byzantium, with Jerusalem and Constantinople not far off. Damascus is also fairly cosmopolitan these days as well."

"I think one thing that should be pointed out, is that in the event of .. something of that sort happening, it's still San Dorado soil, and the laws of the land shall be obeyed, and any soldier that decides to break the law, he shall be subject to San Dorado laws. And I think incidents involving the deaths of civilians, even if legitimate, must not be taken lightly."

I'm pretty out of ideas but I am not going to allow the base be a butt of jokes with some weird goofy name. Otherwise, just call it Base CATO.

Summary of Decision on STAR Procurement

In light of the near completion of Good Mountain, the Legislative Hall has passed the procurement of STAR vessels for the Navy. A total of 15 STAR Destroyers will be ordered and begin construction throughout FY15, 16, and 17. Each year the budgets and requirements will be reviewed by the Hall. There are currently no plans to retire the Arleigh Burkes, however, it is likely they will be either serving a smaller role or perhaps be modified for other uses.

CATO Military Journal

PAM/LAM system trials successful

Kontos Munitions has successfully trialed the PAM/LAM weapons system for the army. The Byzantine Army indicated that it intends to acquire sizable quantities of the system to equip many infantry units, thus granting them firepower of 155mm artillery fire company. The navy seeks to equip its coastal patrol units with the weapon to allow them to have firepower exceeding the bog standard 57mm and 75mm guns. A longer range version is under development as well.

Genoa testfires 1000km range Hyfly missile

Genoa, a S-500F equipped destroyer, test fired Hyfly missile from its VLS system as part of the vessel's year long trials. THe Hyfly missile, a Kontos Munitions product, was fired from a single cell in the S-500F VLS system and struck a target 900km away. Capable of range up to 1000km at MACH 6, it is one of the most advanced hypersonic weapons in operation, and a longer ranged version is under development.

Autonomy

Image

Biltmore Manor, outskirts of Roterburg, Corporate Republic of Coilerburg

“… and finally, there is the issue of what to do with the borderlands”, President Hank shuffled the papers in front of him. Outside the mansion of the Chairman of the Corporate Congress the sun was already setting.

“The congress”, Chairman Lorenz responded carefully, “is loathe to let go of any more territories. It is felt that with the loss of Saffronburg we’ve already conceded quite enough.” The head of state of Coilerburg looked tired.

“That’s all well and good, but right now you’ve got a bunch of militias sitting on your doorstep, which gives your hardliners more reason to remain, well, hardline”, Sidney sighed. “I’m not saying you have to just let them secede…”

“What the president means”, president Sinclair of San Dorado injected smartly, “is that we can probably satisfy them by granting them limited autonomy.”

“Still”, Lorenz frowned, “that sounds like we’d be rewarding the secessionists.”

“Look at this way”, Daphne smiled. “You have no authority over them now. Grant them limited autonomy and you’ll have at least a little. Not to mention that you’ll be saving yourself a whole bunch of hassle and money.”

Lorenz looked thoughtful. “Well, if you put it that way…”

Result: Coilerburg (via NFT pressure) grants a limited degree of autonomy to the inhabitants of the Sabikan borderlands. Call it a belated thank-you present from Sidney Hank for saving his ass.

FASTA bulletin

Selene 2 lands succesfully

With an excited cry of "Splashdown!", the second mission in the Selene program ended with success. The capsule performed an unmanned orbital flight, completing full three orbits with two adult chimpanzees on board, and landing in the Atlantic.

This stunning success underscores FASTA's accumulated experience in constructing and managing human spaceflight. Despite minor engineering problems that cropped up on orbit, all critical systems: life support, heat shield, navigation and telemetry, performed exactly to specifications.

Mission data analysis will take some time, however, and Selene 3 is still at least three months away - despite mission hardware already being stationed at the Vertical Assembly Building, ready for spacecraft assembly once the mission is giventhe go-ahead.

Incidentally, Selene is the first human spaceflight program to make use of the enormous facilities designed to accomodate the gigantic planned Saturn/Energia series of boosters.

The Ring

Akuda Bar, Fabowice, PeZookia

"Get rid of the girls. Then disappear."

The bodyguards looked at each other, obviously troubled by the way Brzytwa said that. They weren't really bothered by the order to murder two innocent women: such things were routine for them, just like savage beatings, rape and other bread-and-butter matters of the business.

No, what worried them was the second part of the sentence. If their boss told them to disappear, this meant he was in trouble. Way more trouble than what was usual.

"What are you waiting for? We don't have much time. Get to it.", Brzytwa said angrily, grabbed his jacket and left the bar.

He passed near a lone man, hunched over a glass of vodka. What differed him from other losers who came here to drown their problems was the fact he wasn't drunk at all, and that he had a police badge in his inner pocket.

"He's left the bar. His goons are going to the back.", Filip said into the air once Brzytwa went past him.

"Can you follow?", the response came over a miniature flesh-colored speaker in the detective's ear. Filip eyed the beefy bouncer who was standing watch over a door marked "EMPLOYEES ONLY", behind which Brzytwa's bodyguards disappeared, "Negative, not without blowing my cover."

Filip's 'cover' was rather thin. He was here on Sebastian's personal orders, without a proper surveillance warrant. If anybody asked, he was here because he enjoyed the atmosphere - not only was that a flimsy excuse, it prevented him from using his authority, since officially the detective wasn't on duty.

But he could use the toilets freely, and that at least would let him hear if anything truly bad was happening - so he did. And almost immediately after closing the door, which cut him off from the music and background noise of the bar, he heard muffled screaming from somewhere in the employee area.

"Damn...", he cursed and pulled out his badge.

"Come again?", the headpiece crackled, "What did you say?"

"I hear screams and sounds of struggle from the employee area. Should I interfere?"

"Stand by..."

Filip cursed again, checking his gun. Suddendly, the screaming was interrupted by a single gunshot - muffled, but clearly identifiable as one.

"The hell I'm gonna stand by...", Filip muttered and flipped open his cell phone.

"112 emergency services."

"Hi, I'm at the Akuda Bar and I just heard gunshots..."

Akuda Bar, upstairs

"You fucking moron! Why the hell did you do that?!", Karol 'Kowal' Kowalski screamed at the other bodyguard. One of the girls was on the floor, clutching her chest, laying in a quickly spreading pool of blood. The other huddled in the corner sobbing, covering her head.

Kowal's friend waved the gun dismissively, "Relax. There's no way anybody heard that."

"Yeah, and I guess nobody will see us carry the body out either, huh? You really are such a dumbass sometimes..."

"We were going to kill the bitch anyway! What's the big friggin' deal?!"

Kowal rolled his eyes, "Just put that gun away and help me out here. And you - shut the fuck up!", he added for the benefit of the second woman, who was beginning to cry uncontrollably, "You're next!"

The lifted the body and rolled it over. The gaping exit wound was still oozing blood, so they wrapped her in one of the cheap, tacky carpets covering the floor.

"Where do we take her?", Kowal's friend asked, as he lifted the body and slung it over his shoulder.

"Downstairs, to the freezer. I'll then bring the car around and we'll drive her out to the forest...", Kowal jerked the other girl to her feet and held the door open for the other man. They walked out into the corridor, where a surprise awaited them.

"Police! Hands up!", Filip shouted, pointing his gun at the two thugs

They reacted quickly. Kowal spun the girl around to use her as a human shield, while his friend dropped the body and reached for his weapon.

Filip fired, three deafening gunshots echoing in the sparsely-lit corridor. Before the carpet-wrapped body could hit the floor, the poor girl's killer was hit with a perfect Sabikan Drill.

Kowal remained calm, however. He retreated somewhat, so that he had his back against a wall and stuck a gun to his hostage's head.

"Drop the gun, pig! Do it, or the bitch dies!"

"You know I won't do that. You don't stand a chance."

"I'm not kidding, man.", Kowal said, very seriously.

"I'm not dropping the gun. If you kill her, they will lock you up for murder."

Both men stared each other down from across the hallway. Both men tried to stall, expecting backup any second now. Kowal hoped that some of the bar's security people would've heard the brief firefight, and come rushing over. Filip hoped police would arrive at any moment now.

Both of them got their wish. A security guard ran into the hallway and screamed something incomprehensible. Filip got distracted for a split-second, and Kowal took the opportunity: he shot the detective in the chest, several times. A few seconds later, however, half a dozen patrol cars came to a screeching halt before the bar, lights blazing, and a swarm of patrol officers rushed inside.

It only took a few more minutes for Kowal to realize he had no chance and surrender.

People's Victory, Shadow Republic of Sjenska, the next morning

The Sjenska militsiamen were mostly local folks, but even then, most of them have never seen something like the scene that the morning sun uncovered. Two dead bodies, a blood-stained curb and a dozen shell casings. Things like these happened sometimes under the old government, but for years now they've been unheard of.

The case was so odd, in fact, that several NOD investigators were milling about the scene, observing as the militsia secured evidence. Javor was there in person, in fact, wondering what he should do. He knew what happened, of course, but he couldn't really tell anybody.

So he observed the scene and mused over his choices. The list he gave Ana contained a dozen names, but she probably only needed to grab and interrogate a few to crack the slave ring. And when she did, she'd inevitably learn who they paid off to keep their operations quiet.

In retrospect, it was probably a bad idea to give the woman real names. But Ana always scared him: if she learned he scammed her, God himself knew what she would do in revenge. Javor's certainly seen what the woman was capable of.

A militsia officer came up to him and broke his train of thought, "That had to be an automatic weapon, sir.", he reported dutifully, "The people living around here said they heard a couple shots, but there's eighteen casings from two different weapons."

"One was a silenced automatic.", Javor said absent-mindedly, "Probably, that is."

"We thought so as well. We'll send the casings for ballistic analysis, but it will take time."

"Yes...well, both victims were criminal scum.", Javor observed, annoyed at the officer's insistence to stick around and discuss the case.

"Yes...I wonder who could've done that, though. He left no real trace, except for the casings."

Outskirts of People's Victory, at the same time

"Now, let me explain something to you. I will now start asking you questions, and you will answer them the best you can.", Ana said calmly, pacing around the moist, dark basement.

"Go to hell!", Asim screamed back, not quite understanding the situation he was in.

"You don't seem to get it, do you? You may play the defiant hero all day long, but here's a thought: it's utterly, completely useless. The police won't give a fuck about you. Your friends will not look for you. And if you keep annoying me with your tough guy act, I will loose my temper real fast. Trust me, you won't like me when I'm angry."

"Take your threats and choke on them, bitch!"

Ana sighed and rolled her eyes. So typical...

"How about I make you choke on something?", she said, reaching for a knife and rubber tourniquet, "I'm sure you'll find it tasty."

It didn't occur to Asim what exactly she was going to do, untill she began cutting his pants open. He opened his mouth to scream, but Ana just took the opportunity to skillfully gag him.

Then she smiled, looking at her reflection in the knife's blade.

"Too late, Asim. I did warn you."

PeZookia proposes 'space environmental standards' convention

The PeZookian Foreign Ministry is rumored to have began a series of international consultations over the demand for an international agreement on maintaining a clean environment in Earth orbit.

The agreement, tenatively named the Convention On Space Environmental Standards (COSES), is rumored to contain points such as an agreement to conduct space weapon tests on decaying orbits only, regulations demanding for satellites to carry enough on-board fuel so that they can be deorbited at the end of their life, as well as standards and practices for spacecraft waste disposal.

It is unknown what international reaction to the proposal will be, especially since officials at the Foreign Ministry have denied comment at this time.

This… Is Worldwide One, News and Entertainment from the Heart of San Dorado!

President Makes ‘Dream Team’ Public
President Sidney Hank, the newly elected chief of state of the North Frequesuan Trust, has made public his definitive nominations for the commissioners of the Syndicate. The commissioners will wield broad-ranging executive power on matters such as economic integration, law enforcement and justice, regional development, defence and external economic-political policy. Their positions will have to be confirmed by the legislatures of the NFT member states, but considering the President’s current widespread popularity this is expected to be a rubber stamp motion.

The foremost members of the ‘dream team’ are:

Cordelia Cordova
Image
Scion of an old and wealthy Coilerburg business family with ties to Shroomanian aristocracy, former congresswoman Cordova distinguished herself as a lone voice of opposition to the military adventurism espoused by the Coiler governments of the last decade. Rumoured to have been one of the driving forces behind the integration of Coilerburg and San Dorado. Cordova is nominated for the position of Commissioner for Business and Justice (CBJ).

Iago Morgan
Image
Self-made man and financial wizard Iago Morgan grew up in the infamous Sprawl of San Dorado City, but made a fortune on the stock market and was quick to become one of the city-state’s foremost experts on anything involving the international flow of funds. As the founder of Morgan Finance International and former Executive Director for Finance, Economics and Industry, he is easily the best man to further manage the economic integration of the NFT. Morgan is nominated for the position of Commissioner of the Financial Committee (FiCo).

James Eckhart
Image
General (ret.) James G. Eckhart, formerly of the Coilerburg Army, recently had perhaps the single most thankless job of the entire continent of Frequesue: keeping the Army in line after the embarrassing end of the One Day War with Sabika, the disintegration of the Grand Army of Coilerburg, and the subsequent assassination of General Argent. He proved his mettle by managing to keep (the majority of) the Coilerburg Army from overt mutiny, and in fact oversaw a number of reorganization that vastly improved the standing of the Army even before San Dorado moved in to assist. Eckhart is nominated for the position of Commissioner for the Armed Forces (CAF).

Charlie Duquesne
Image
Former DEPICOR sub-director and first-ever San Doradan ambassador to the Crimson Star Republic Charlie Duquesne is perhaps most famous for her pivotal role in forcing the CSR to the negotiating table during the AFSR crisis, as well as the signing of the Frequesuan Neutrality Treaty. She has extensive experience in the world of international diplomacy, and is nominated for the position of Commissioner for Foreign Relations (CoFoR).

Air Gemini Opens High-Speed Coilerburg-San Dorado Service
Image

San Dorado airline Air Gemini announced that from next month onward it will operate a nonstop three-times-a-day high-speed service between Roterburg International Airport in Coilerburg and Kittyhawk International Skyport in San Dorado. Passengers will fly on Air Gemini’s fleet of RA-500 Thunderwave medium-size supersonic cruisers, “the same aircraft the President flies!”

The Air Gemini line further cements Kittyhawk Skyport’s position as a key link in the international air-route network. Last year the Skyport was chosen as the Frequesuan ‘port of call’ for the IRT’s Delta Airlines fleet of 2707 supersonic international liner aircraft.

Rocket Authority Expresses Apprehension Over PeZookian Plan
Image

Director Jacob Renfrew of the San Dorado Rocket Authority has expressed his ‘apprehension’ over a preliminary PeZookian proposal for -among other things- an international agreement on maintaining a clean environment in Earth orbit. The Rocket Authority is the civilian arm of the Rocket Forces, concerning itself with private space flight activities most notable of which commercial satellite launches.

“I agree in principle that we have to strive to keep earth orbit as debris-free as we can”, Renfrew explained. “But any demand for extra fuel and so forth would mean average satellite weight would go up, and thus launch costs might very well increase by a not-insignificant margin. That could be bad for business.”

The PeZookian proposal comes hot on the heels of a successful second test launch of the S-2 Silver Star orbiter. The North Frequesuan Rocket Forces however declined to comment on possible proposed clauses concerning orbital weapons tests. “We’ll await the definitive PeZookian proposal first”, said a spokesperson for General Masterson. “We’ve an excellent working relationship with PeZookia and FASTA, and the PeZookians usually know what they are talking about. We’re confident they wouldn’t propose anything needlessly overbearing.”

Lady Freedom Arrives At NuParadise
Image

The cruiser NFS Lady Freedom has arrived at the North-Velarian colony of NuParadise. The heavily armed nuclear cruiser is on a multi-month mission to wave the flag around the continent of Velaria.

NuParadise is a settlement of Frequesuan (mostly Coilerburger) adventurers. Though not officially a Coiler colony the settlement used to receive a not-insignificant amount of aid from the Coilerburg government pre-incorporation. With the ratification of the NFT treaty the colony’s status has become uncertain. It is hoped that with the arrival of the Lady Freedom and a number of NFT CoFoR representatives the status of NuParadise can be cleared up.

USDLP To Develop Coilerburg Tidal Power Plants
Image

The University of San Dorado and La Palma has been granted permission to begin development of a tidal power plant park off the coast of Coilerburg. The park will initially consist of a small number of experimental generators, but can be quickly expanded should the test be a success.

Today Coilerburg generates energy mainly through ageing coal and oil-fired plants. Says a University spokeswoman: “We are very excited about this development. Tidal power is cheap, inexhaustible, and very environmentally friendly!”

Shroompeace activists have expressed anger over the plans, claiming the tidal generator park will constitute a ‘mortal danger to marine animals’.

Constantinople Times

BAM and Sukhoi talk about a MACH 3 airliner

"Yes, we think the T-4 design could be used for a MACH 3 airliner," says a spokesmen for the joint venture. BAM and Sukhoi are apparently working on a MACH 3 airliner, which they hope will see service by the end of the decade. "Much of the work on the airframe is done. We are looking into enlarging the fuselage, and trying to look into tinkering the airframe so that people could ride the aircraft comfortably. That will take time," continues the spokesman.

In other news, BAM and Sukhoi have agreed to work on an improved A322. The collaboration combines UCSR ingenuity, with Byzantine and Shroomanian engineering skills and experience

Superconducting Linear Accelerator officially comes online. The search for the Higgs Boson begins

The Supeconducting Linear Accelerator (SLAC), finally came online after a 1 year delay. The delay was traced to problems with the new superconducting magnets used and the radio frequency generators. "We underestimated the difficulty, and considerable work was done to get the entire accelerator up to specification of 10TeV," says a leading spokesman. The search for the Higgs Boson is said to be a difficult one, but the SLAC has one advantage, in that it can generaote more precise results than standard ring accelerators. While the construction project winds down, the next project, to create a 20TeV Linear accelerator has already begun. At the opening ceremony, the Emperor Heraclius IV congratulated scientists on their monumental achievement and urged them to make full use of the accelerator, and that the Empire would grant them the resources required to achieve the results. "We Byzantines have been at the forefront of research for the last few centuries. We were one of the first to create the Bose Einstein Condensate, and we were instrumental in the creation of the Quantum Electrodynamics. Today marks the start of the race to find the Higgs Boson. May your search be fruitful."

New Science Channel to be launched

Veritas Media Corporation is launching a new channel, modeled after its successful History Channel. The channel will be aired through Space Telecommunications' satellite network, reaching across the globe. It is aimed at showcasing a series of documentaries, covering every aspect of Science, throughout the world.

The Next Mars mission

While the rest of the world scrambles for the Moon, a group of scientists from across CATO are working on the next Mars mission. "A lot of the mapping data returned by DSP-1 was pretty fascinating. But now, the challenge is to go down to the surface and take spectroscopic measurements and other interesting data," says one scientist. The team hope to within the next 2-3 years launch an enlarged DSP type spacecraft towards Mars and to drop off an unmanned vehicle onto the surface, while a portion of the spacecraft remain in orbit to relay the vehicle's data stream back to earth.

Somewhere in San Dorado

"But I say, my friend, why don't we forget that regrettable incident?" the Shroomanian Lord said to the man across the dining table. On their table, a haggis had just been recently served. "Certainly, men of our statures, can come to a... mutually profitable agreement?"

"Indeed we could... and there's nothing disqualifying your daughter from getting her space tourist visa approved," the San Doradan replied coolly. "But it's still a matter that my friends find most disconcerting."

Image

"What matter?" the Lord asked dubiously.

"The matter that your daughter went stark raving mad in outer space and nearly killed Alan Shroompard, the Hero of Space!" the man answered back.

"BAAAAH!" Lord Moonbeam boomed. "My daughter was on the verge of ascending into the gilded halls of Valhalla! Shroompard, as brave a warrior and a Hero of Space as he is, was a fool to deny her a chance at glory! Those FASTA frumps too are fools for denying her! But the Moonbeams have their legacy to consider, and we will not be denied thrice! It would be wise for you to reconsider, my friend, lest you wish to suffer the same fate as this haggis!"

Image

Lord Moonbeam stabbed the haggis with a large fork before the San Doradan corporate.

"Uhh.... very well then, I'll see what I can do, then," the man said, gaping in womanly fear. "I'll see what I can do for you and your daughter... and your legacy to consider!"

"Very good," Lord Moonbeam placed his large arm around the man's back. "I can't wait to tell Miranda!"

Low Earth Orbit

"Power loss!", Svetlana shouted over the intercom, as the control panels went dark all of a sudden. Only a few emergency gauges remained lit.

"Maurizio, cut off all non-essential systems. Did we lose a fuel cell?", Alan responded, calm and collected.

"Two", Svetlana reported from her station, "One is only giving fifty percent power"

Alan quickly scanned the masive control panel above his head. Thankfully, CSR engineers had a habit of including lots of analog backups to the 'glass cockpit' digital displays which comprised most of Selene's instrumentation.

"I'm still getting reactant flow. What the hell is going on?"

"We're approaching rendezvous, Alan. What do we do?", Maurizio seemed tense. He was a new astronaut, just graduated from the training program. Near the top of his class, but he still seemed tense in the cockpit.

"Instrumentation failure?", Svetlana suggested

"We'd be getting power if that was the case...unless the computer cut it off. Maurizio, reset the main computer."

"On it", the young Langley national performed the procedure quickly, and entirely from memory. The entire crew has been practicing for Selene for so long that they had most of the checklists memorized.

The cockpit flashed to life as power returned to all systems. Svetlana grabbed her control sticks and began the rendezvous procedure immediately.

"Okay people, we're done here. Excellent performance.", their headpieces brought Saiko Kaneda's voice to them a few minutes later, after Svetlana accomplished a perfect docking with the simulated Leonov Target Vehicle. Light came on, and a technician opened the external hatch to the Selene Simulator.

The three astronauts crawled outside, grinning widely.

"Don't be so satisfied. Your performance was excellent, but suboptimal...take a five minute break, grab some coffee and head for briefing room C...", Kaneda was interrupted by an executive assistant.

"Mr. Kaneda, the Director wishes to see you."

"What? I thought he was at the JSC, overseeing launch preparations? Explain.", the Zorian said, raising an eyebrow.

"No, he flew back a few hours ago. Apparently, a San Dorado company wants to discuss something important..."

"Fine. Lead on."

Comona Island, Space City, Conference Room A

"Why should we agree to that? It increases the risk. Has your company ever attempted a first-orbit rendezvous?"

The conference room was occupied by practically every person from senior FASTA leadership, all shooting pointed questions towards the Pegasus executive. He remained calm, however - a veteran San Dorado businessman, he's weathered worse storms.

"No, but we're co-operating the the Rocket Authority on the mission. Incidentally, this is part of the reason why we're asking for consultations with FASTA."

"This idea will increase costs, occupy significant amounts of manpower and elevate mission complexity. You will get your tourist revenue, what's in it for FASTA?", FASTA's Director of Operations wasn't a stranger to business meetings himself, and was showing it.

"Pegasus is willing to finance all PR efforts involving this enterprise, and liberally mention FASTA's involvement. You get free PR - I understand that's a big problem for you people..."

"I see...let's talk details. What do 'PR efforts' encompass?"

"Well...TV spots, newspaper articles, press conferences about the joint mission. We can throw in interviews with your astronauts, perhaps..."

"Throw in partial financing of an educational campaign about the space program and you have a deal."

The San Doradan frowned, "That's a bit much. We still need to make a profit, you know..."

"You're charging these people what, ten million per launch? You will more than recuperate the costs, especially with promotion after such an accomplishment during your first flight."

"Fine", the executive capitulated, "You have a deal. I'll fax a proposal for the agreement later."

Result: FASTA agrees to help Pegasus (the space tourism company) arrange an on-orbit rendezvous between Selene 3 and one of their Silver Streaks, so that rich fucks can take awesome photos of the FASTA spacecraft.

The Coup (III)

Image

“General, you may begin when ready,” the deposed King ordered.

Palace of the Legislature (Fomerly White-Gold Tower), Sheoth, Kingdom of Vineyards

Image

Prime Minister Martin Black sat on the desk in his office, listening to the reporter’s questions about an upcoming legislative initiative to cut down on various state sponsorship of strikes and protests of for profit organizations, “Well Jon, it is likely that this initiative will not change the law in anyway, but more in the policy used to determine whether the government does or does not condone the actions. The current system allows for both voter recall, and the opposition condoning protests, occasionally riots, to erode confidence in the ruling party. This is aiming to stop that from happening.”

As the Prime Minister continued to speak about the initiative, gunshots were heard from outside the window across the office. Outside was a military officer, holding a packet of paper in one hand, and a megaphone in the other, “Members of the Vinish Senate, staff, and assorted peoples, on the orders of King Jeffery I, you are all under arrest for Treason against His Kingdom.”

Black looked at the reporter, now standing next to him at the window, “Did you get that, Jon? Jon?”

It began with a single phone call, a concerned citizen calling his local police station to report the armed officers arresting the Senate. What followed was a strike of amazing luck, that none of the parties, involved or not, would even really notice. The station reported the ‘military action taken against the Senate,’ calling one an Army base. The Army base, operated by General St. Paul, was prepared to field questions regarding the military operations happening around the capital, but it wasn’t prepared for a direct questioning of the motives of the military officers, nor for the direct quote. In the operator’s scramble to cover his own ass, a member of VEIL reported the news to VEIL central, which in turn passed the information to Cloud Ruler Temple.

Cloud Ruler Temple, Outside Azzan

Image

King Brandon leaned back in the chair he was in, “So, the military has staged a coup with the help of Jeffy, damn. We should have seen that coming.” Brandon turned back around and began fiddling with his desk, looking for something.

“Yes, sire… What are you doing?” his aide, who had brought the message to the King, asked.

“Looking for that video camera, it is in this desk somewhere.”

”Sire, we do not have time for this, we need to evacuate, immediately.”

“Yes, we do have to evacuate, immediately, which is what, you will be supervising while I perform my personal pre-job loss ritual.”

“We don’t know how much time we have before Jeffery attempts to assault this castle, we have to leave quickly.”

“Look, the way I see it, it will take a certain amount of time to both erase as much important information as possible, and to evacuate everyone else, so I will use some of that time to make this little video for Jeffy, and if I can’t escape in time, oh well.”

The aide sighed, she had lost that battle, and she had to, as the King had said, coordinate the evacuation of Cloud Ruler Temple.

Brandon continued fiddling, now with a video camera that was actually worse than the camera he had had in his ‘previous life.’ Mumbling to himself, “Oh,” he began to record, “Soldiers of Jeffery I, Prince of Space, or whatever that maniac is styling himself as these days, I am here to deliver my last address to the people for a while, dictated by the people in fact. I will be unable to contact this nation following the evacuation of this castle, so I will state all I can here, and now.

“The new boss is literally in this case the Old Boss, he has failed once, and he will fail again. When he fails, you will find this nation without focus, just a jumble of peoples, cultures, and languages trying to hold together. When it will deem itself necessary, I will return, to save your, again. So, while you soldiers, generals, and kleptocrats, enjoy your little game, but, Don’t Let Me Down. Don’t. Let. Me. Down.”

Brandon hurried to the lift, which would lead to the underground emergency tram-hub.

Shroomston, CFR Territories, Commonwealth of Vineyards

Image

Acting Commander Shroom De Gaulle, the former Second in Command of Vinish Armed Forces in the CFR, was not in the happiest of moods. CNBC, his news source of choice, had been silent for three hours, since they reported King Jeffery’s seizer of power as a coup, this annoying little bit wasn’t alone, his previous commander, Wallace Breen, had tried to install himself as the ‘Duke of Shroomire,’ and the Army in the CFR would have none of that. Most of the soldiers, mechanics, and other support personal had supported De Gaulle, but a small group of loyalists and sycophants had attached themselves to Breen’s cause, and were causing the Commander headaches. On top of this, the King was coming directly to Shroomston, to asses De Gaulle’s ‘Free Vineyards’ plan, a plan that the Commander had just made up on the spot to earn himself some points with the monarch. The one bright spot on his day, unknown to De Gaulle, was that he had a very powerful supporter, VEIL.

Continental Shroomston Airport (CSA), Outskirts of Shroomston, Free Vineyards

Image

“I knew we shouldn’t have booked that flight using a San Doradan firm, the company probably just went bankrupt.”

“Calm, calm, we have two weeks, and the plane isn’t actually supposed to be arriving for another hour or so.”

”Wait, is that our plane.”

”No, looks to small, looks more like a private plane.”

“That doesn’t make any sense; no one with money would come here, oh well, it is landing near us, so we can see just what sort of person rides a private plane to the CFR.”

Image

Exiting the plane, King Brandon swiftly moved out in front of his now small army (eight people) of attachés, experts, and aides. Hiss current goal was to just meet with Shroom De Gaulle and, later, Director Roger Shrubber, and establish what kind of campaign against ‘Jeffy’ would be organized. He failed to notice two things, one that a pair of people were conversing between themselves after recognizing him, and that one of the military experts was blathering on about something, “Uh, could you repeat that.”

“Sire, we need to move speedily if we are to catch King Jeffery unprepared, if he can be caught unprepared.”

Brandon shook his head, “If he may be prepared now, we might as well use the alternate plan.”

”And that would be?”

”Let the entire house of cards fall, and see if we can catch as many of the cards on their way down.”

”Oh…”

“You tell the people, ‘if you are firmly against this administration, use passive resistance, do not take arms.”

“Oh…”
This is an empty country and I am it's king, and I should not be allowed to touch anything.

Press release by PeZookian Foreign Ministry

His Majesty's Government is gravely concerned over recent actions of insurgent factions within the Vinnish military. It is the position of PeZookia's government that the seizure of power was unlawful and unjustified, and thus, His Majesty's Government refuses to recognize leaders of the coup as the new lawful government of The Commonwealth.

All PeZookian citizens currently residing in the Vineyards have been advised to leave the country immediately. Local consulates and diplomatic missions have been instructed not to contract the rebel administration with matters relating to diplomatic activities befitting the legal government. King Brandon's Government-in-exile is officially recognized as the lawful administration of the Commonwealth, with full support of the Republic Of PeZookia.

Imperial Chronicles

"It's a wonder to me that coups of this sort should still continue to exist," thought aloud the Emperor of the over a millennia old Byzantine Empire. "More so if they are taken against a sovereign Monarch."

"Well, this nation is but a mere ... infant compared to the Roman Empire. The Empire existed before Frequesue was even found. Even our history is filled with coups. Heraclius I, of whom you took your name, himself rose to Emperor via a coup supported by the Exarchate of Carthage, in the northern parts of what is now Imperial Japanistan," pointed out Decius.

"They broke some of the basic rules of statecraft; never let any general get too much power," pointed out Selenov.

"That indeed. The title of Emperor has somewhat diluted over the years as the identity of statehood came to fore. The Emperors are still tolerated because they have successfully guided foreign policy and defended the realm, and also because the Legions and Navy and Air Force swore allegiance first to the Emperor and second to their nation. Only politically reliable and competent strategos and admirals are appointed. Only those who can be trusted to obey the Emperor and fulfill their duties to the state competently were allowed to take command. It is this reason that every son of every Emperor has to follow a rite of passage of service in the military before he takes on the title of Emperor. Even mine currently serves in the army itself. Every time an Emperor acclaimed, he is acclaimed by the Senate, the strategos and admirals in the entire military. My face or one of my predecessors is on every solidi coin and dollar issued throughout the Empire. Everyone knows who is the true power in this realm, and I sure hope no strategos and admiral gets any bright ideas. And there's also the Varangian Guards. They can go take the head off any damn fool as well," said the Emperor.

"Which is why no person sits on the post longer than 6-8 years," noted Selenov.

"Except you two."

"So, we've received proposals for our Fast Patrol Craft. The UCSR has submitted a bid." The room broke out in laughter. "Actually, they put in three. We rejected the first two for failing to meet threshold requirements. Yes, I know. Still have to give them a chance. Maybe they'll give us something good for the business. Like withdrawing from Livorno." The room broke out into laughter again.

"Going on, the first bid is a Nanuchka-IV corvette. Heavily armed, completely incompatible with our existing standards, a rather large crew, rather larger than we really wanted. It's barely suitable for our purposes, but we've got better options.

"Coilerburg Iron Works in San Dorado has proposed their Whitecap class. It meets the objective speed requirements, and the objective range and endurance specs. They're willing to work with us to customize the armament to our requirements. This will ensure it can at least meet the threshold requirements, though it is likely that the objective requirements are within reach. They do seem to have captured the spirit of what we're looking for though.

"Fielding Navy Yard has proposed a design called Cyclone. Carries two RHIB, a Mk110 57mm gun forward, SeaRAM aft. It's based off a design from Wilkonia, named the same. Meets the objective weapon requirements, and the objective small craft requirement. It's a close match for our requirements, but it lacks the ability to be significantly uparmed in times of war.

"Nergal Heavy Industries from Langley has the Sa'ar 4.5-class. Like the UCSR, they've chosen something larger than than we really want, in response to our rejection of their initial proposals. We don't really have the funding to man the projected buy of these.

"Byzantine National Shipbuilding has bid the SF300 and SF350 classes. The two are fairly similar, though the SF350 is about twice the displacement. They're both a bit larger than we really wished for. However, the crew strength on them are suitable. The better contender is the SF300, due to the lower manning requirements, and cheaper acquisition costs.

"Old Dominion has a derivative of the Shield class, which is a surface effect ship. It's been lengthened by 24 feet to provide greater range and endurance. Meets our objective requirements for nearly everything, and handily exceeds the speed spec at greater than 55 knots. Low crew is a plus. It's one of the more expensive ships, at R40 million."

The Ring

People's Victory, Shadow Republic Of Sjenska

The body was handcuffed to a chair, slumped backwards and gagged. That in itself was not an unusual sight - what unnerved everyone present at the crime scene was the huge pool of blood covering the floor. And the wound which caused it.

"The cause of death is pretty obvious, you see", the local coroner explained matter of factly, pointing to the amputated penis, "He probably bled to death in minutes. However, you can see clearly that he had a tourniquet applied to the stump, which was later removed."

The militsia lieutenant shook his head in disbelief. That crime spree had to be connected: not only did it happen barely hours apart, but both the double murder and this were exceptionally brutal.

A commotion at the door signified arrival of NOD investigators. To the young lieutenant, this proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that something odd was going on. He also recognized the officer in charge - it was the same man he's talked to before, at the double murder scene earlier that night.

Javor Belic froze when he entered the basement. He actually recognized the man: Asim showed up a few times during his meetings with head honchos in the organization. That meant he knew their faces, and the address of the safehouse as well. And if he knew that, Ana did.

It was at that point that he made the decision to run. Before the militsia officer in charge could brief him on the case, he barked a few quick instruction to his subordinates and left in a hurry. He had to get the hell out of the country...but for that, he needed money.

Fortunately, even Ana had to sleep. He hoped this would give him enough time to collect his cut of the business and get as far away as possible.

Amphetamine made her senses sharp and her mind clear. She knew she'd regret using it, but there was no other choice: Ana's wasted enough time already. Each passing hour increased the chance she'd never find Nadya again.

She'd been observing the house on Worker's Way for several hours now. Asim told her everything she needed to know about the place, including names and descriptions of the people who usually met there. From what he said, she was just two steps away from her sister.

Another car pulled into the driveway. It was interesting that in a country still mired in poverty and starvation, there were people willing to spend enough money on prostitutes to buy so many cars for the criminals providing these 'services'.

Ana watched the latest arrival closely, and for the first time in many days, she froze in shock, seeing Javor Belic get out of his new Lada and knock on the door. It took her a while to snap out of it, and shock soon gave way to burning rage.

She got up and grabbed her gear. There was no point to waiting anymore.

Damascus, Syria

The girls arrived several days beforehand, ferried in discreetly via a military transport plane to one of countless airbases. The cargo handlers had no idea what was inside the olive green unified transport container when they loaded it onto a truck and drove it across the city to a holding facility owned by the security services. From there, the 'merchandise', kidnapped from all over the Old Continent, drugged and bound, was driven over to one of the countless palaces owned by prince Issam. The girls were washed, given food and fresh drug injections. Guarded by the Prince's trusted men, they would await their fates in a murky, dark cellar below an opulent palace.

For Karim Saffayed, this was just part of everyday business. He held no illusions about the morality of what he was doing: but he could get away with it, and the money his organization was making did its part to quelch any remorse.

The Persian smiled wickedly, watching the reception hall fill up. At least he wasn't a hypocrite like these people - men of high stature in Syrian society, wealthy businessmen and politicians, often preaching morality and family values and scorning others for straying from the true path. And yet, here they were: attending a party with their wives and lovers, only to head backstage at a certain point to buy and sell young women to abuse and discard like cheap gadgets. In many ways, these people were driven by their base instincts far more than Kamir ever would be.

"Quite an impressive amount of guests", Kamir observed dryly when the Prince arrived and stopped briefly at his observation point above the hall.

"Yes...most of them are important to my position in one way or another. Only a few will win the...priviledge of participating in today's auction."

Kamir smiled again, before turning his attention away from the teeming floor below, "Before you go entertain the guests, there is a small matter I need taken care of", he said to the prince.

"Anything within reason"

"There is a nosy Byzantine diplomat who has recently become...inconveniently interested in our operations here in Syria. I suspect he's actually an intelligence officer at their embassy here."

"I see. This can be a dangerous situation."

"Yes...their police are already troublesome enough as it is, it won't do if our connections to your government are discovered. You see why this matter needs to be taken care of."

"Of course. Give me his name."

Kamir handed a prince a business card.

"I'll make sure he's not an obstruction any more."

Fabowice, PeZookia, District Courthouse

The District Prosecutor was out of his office, Sebastian was told by his assitant - in Syria on some liaison mission or another. Fortunately, he left his deputy in charge of the office.

"I need an arrest warrant", the police comissar said before the deputy could ask a single question, "And fast."

"Wait...weren't you here yesterday? Yes, you were!", the assistant prosecutor said sarcastically, "In fact, I have right here clear instructions on the case, and they say you're not getting a warrant unless you provide us with actual evidence of wrongdoing."

"Right here, Prosecutor" ,Sebastian laid a folder on the man's desk, "A girl was murdered in the back rooms of the bar Brzytwa used to frequent, by one of his bodyguards, under his orders. Good enough?"

The deputy took some time to read the case report, but finally nodded.

"You got your warrant, comissar. Bring him in."

Fabowice International Airport

The huge BAMF airliner was slowly filling up with passengers, who actually had some trouble finding their assigned seats inside the monstrous plane. Brzytwa was leaning back in his chair, quite satisfied with himself. In a few minutes, the plane would take off, and the local police would never find him. He had enough money to start a new life in the Caymans, or maybe the IRT, free from the baggage he's acquired over the years. In a way, what happened to him was good. Chance for a new start.

His pleasant daydrem was ruined abruptly, when he saw a stewardess point him out to two men in leather jackets, who could only be cops. He bolted upright and started running immediately, pushing the boarding passengers aside.

"Police! Stop!", one of the men yelled, as both gave chase. It didn't last very long - Brzytwa made his way to the rear exit, ran across the boarding sleeve and fell straight in the hands of several airport policemen waiting for him there. Unarmed and backed into a corner, he surrendered.

As they snapped the cuffs on him, Brzytwa idly wondered if he'd live for very long in prison: his superiors in the organization didn't like people who endangered them, even if they said nothing during interrogations. They'd be pissed.

Shadow Republic Of Sjenska, Worker's Way

The two bored guards never saw it coming: the door opened just slightly, and a hail of bullets came through the crack, gunning them both down before they had a chance to react. A slender female shape, clad in improvised combat gear entered right afterwards and carefully closed the door.

She moved deeper into the house, her submachine gun at the ready. Another man was making coffee in the kitchen, and got shot three times - he was dead before he knew what happened.

When he fell, however,he dragged down a wide assortment of cups and plates, making a horrible noise. A thug came running down the stairs, and managed to get off a few shots at Ana's silhouette - alerting everyone inside to her presence.

She fell back across the kitchen, towards the building's central staircase. The house's guards followed her, running in a disorganized gaggle and yelling wildly.

Two floors up, she paused to catch her breath and threw one of her NOD-provided grenades down the stairwell. The blast threw shrapnel in every direction, piercing the rickety wooden structure of the stairwell, peppering the walls and blowing the few windows that still remained. She ran downstairs again, putting a round or two into every body that was still moving.

The kitchen was empty now, save for the dead body slumped over the electric stove. She moved out of the room, cutting across the interior stairs and to the living room.

Before she could open the door, an AK burst almost got her from behind - two men were firing on her from the top of the stairs, while three or four more hanged back, yelling curses. Bullets whizzed past, smacking into old walls and shredding furniture. Ana changed her position, with only luck saving her from getting fatally wounded, and returned fire with a long burst from her Bison, cutting the legs from under one of the AK shooters. The other decided to charge, and took cover at the last minute, before Ana could get a solid bead on him, but then stupidly stuck his head out to take a pot shot - and got a bullet right between the eyes.

Breathing heavily, she changed the magazine and readjusted the bandana covering her face. The men who were yelling bravely just a minute ago disappeared to somewhere - but Ana knew they didn't come down the stairs, and there were no exits on the upper floor. So she came to get them.

One was huddling in a niche in the corridor, right besides the stairs. He had a gun, but Ana took it from him almost effortlessly.

"Are you in charge?!", she screamed, pointing his own pistol at his face

"No! No, I'm not!", he squealed, covering his head

"Then you're useless to me", she answered and shot him. The pistol she discarded and proceeded to the nearest living room. She kicked down the door and found Pietia there, holding some girl as a human shield.

"Drop the gun!", he screamed, having heard the brief discussion in the corridor and thinking himself backed into a corner.

"Oh, not this again...", Ana murmured, levelling the Bison, "Are you in charge?"

"What?"

"I asked you a question. Are you in charge here?"

Pietia stared at the strange woman for a while. She shot Amur when he answered no. She seemed not to care in the slightest about the woman he was holding. There was only one way out of this situation, but he had to be fast.

"Yes", he answered and aimed his pistol at the woman. She squeezed the trigger, but at the same time, a shot grazed her back. The Bison burst went wide and ruined the wall behind Pietia, who in turn threw himself behind a heavy oaken desk.

Javor ran into the room, his pistol outstretched, frantically looking for Ana. He saw her drop to the floor - by all logic, she should've been there. But the amphetamine she took did its job well - she remained focused, changed positions and shot Javor in the stomach as soon as he came through the door. Pietia fired on her several times then, missing entirely when she ducked back into the corridor. Calmly, Ana walked to one of the dead AK shooters and then back to the room.

Pietia was reloading when an AK burst blew right through the desk next to him.

"Get the hell out of there before I blow you away! Hands where I can see them!", she shouted, staring down the AK's sights, "I won't say this a second time!"

Pietia cursed, staring at the huge, gaping holes in disbelief and shock. If that was the woman he was warned about, he underestimated her something fierce.

"Out! NOW!", came another command, punctuated by a shot. Pietia threw his pistol away and his hands up, cussing in disgust.

"Good boy. Face to the wall.", she pointed with the AK, "And you shut up!", she added for Javor's benefit when he moaned in pain, "I'll speak with you after I'm finished with him."

Pietia turned around and faced the wall, waiting for the woman's next move.

"Kneel", she hissed, even as she kicked away Javor's weapons, "And better start talking."

Updates to the Cascadian Military:

The Amphibious Contingency Group - based around the fourth [i}Cascadia[/i]-class Amphibious Assault Carrier, the CRS Constellation - was formally activated on New Year's 2015. Two days later the ACG set off from Bremerton for her forward deployment post at the expanded New Olympia Naval Base in the Republic of Adabani. The unit will remain ported there and will until the first quarter of 2018, when the ACG will return to Bremerton for an extended R&R period.

Currently two squadrons of the RCAF (8th and 11th) are fully outfitted with the new 5th Gen ASF-18 Sparrowhawks (OOC: X-32 w/ Pelikan Tail, the Boeing submission to the JSF) and one (1st Fighter Squadron) is partially outfitted, with eight Sparrowhawks, to finish outfitting by the summer, when 7th Squadron will begin receiving Sparrowhawks to replace the ASF-9Cs.

As well, the elite 4th Squadron (The "Green Aces") have received their first detachment of four ASF-20 Kestrels (OOC: YF-23 Black Widow IIs) and will finish outfitting by the middle of next year, after which the 2nd Squadron will begin outfitting.

In anticipation of commissioning the Reprisal for service by 2017, the Navy has since late 2013 laid down a new set of accompanying ships for the carrier, including the first runs of the new John Monroe-class "FFNG" and the Trigger-class SSN (the former is a modern frigate design with nuclear power, a testbed that will determine of the RCN finds nuclear-powered escorts cost-effective, the latter is an upgraded Seawolf-class design with state-of-the-art electronics and a superior torpedo capacity). Another four John Q. Adams-class destroyers will be laid by the end of 2016 to begin replacing the older Jiang Kai-sheng-class destroyers of the fleet.

The Jiang Kai-sheng-class destroyer Luis Vamos is being sent into mothballs at the end of the year, as it has hit thirty years of service time and is not to be provided with SLEP (though if an offer is made by another nation for purchase it can be extended by two decades or so via SLEP).

The Cascadian Army's AFV Procurement Program is being permitted to trial phase. Open bids are being offered to friendly foreign nations to provide new battle tanks for the Cascadian Army.
