News on Tennants last Dr Who
Well here's the news
http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/cult/a15013 ... eturn.html
And, yet again we get the return of the moon face, slack jawed chav known as Rose, what must be one of the most overrated companions ever. In my mind there's been far better, Romana (both versions), Leela, Liz Smith, Sarah Jane, even Tegan and Nyssa were more bearable.
Roses last appearances trying to look tough while holding an unfeasibly large and horrendously designed gun just didn't work, yet it appears we'll have to endure her yet again...

Some of us who HAVEN'T been watching Dr Who since its inception actually rather LIKE Rose Tyler, you know.

'Hey, we both have a Martian's phone number on our speed dial. I think I deserve the benefit of the doubt.'

Re: News on Tennants last Dr Who
I haven't watched it since it's inception, I've caught up with some of the older ones on DVD, and I've thankfully been spared Bonnie Langford, but she is still one of the most overused and overrated companions in my opinion and Piper really doesn't add anything significant to the show. She wasn't bad, though not great at first, but I think she got worse.

You are entitled to your opinion of course. In MINE she most certainly added something worthwhile to the Eccleston and beyond era of Dr Who if nothing else. BBC seems to agree, what with her kinda-sorta being back at the end of s4.

Re: News on Tennants last Dr Who
Ah, I see that Davies is going for the "everything but the kitchen sink" approach that made Journey's End so horrible. That was a truly atrocious hour of television. The man seems to be incapable of writing a major plot-line without resorting to familiar foes or characters. Has there been a single season finale of the series where this has been the case? Clearly not.
Martha was Rose-lite and Donna was self-involved to the point of absurdity (it was particularly appalling in Turn Left when she was focusing on trivial bullshit while the world crumbled around her).
Just once I'd like to see a travelling companion who isn't lusting after or admiring of the Doctor. Like say, a grumpy geriatric or a crusty military veteran in the vein of the Brigadier. Someone who could call the Doctor out on his over the top moralising. That would be a nice catalyst for the Doctor's regeneration into Matt Smith, I think. The generic villain of the episode commits an atrocity, the Doctor refuses to kill him/her but the companion does. This leads to a major fight between the two, accidentally resulting in the Doctor's demise.
Agreed. She was tolerable to a certain extent but she became increasingly overly emotional and annoying as the seasons passed. It was irritating enough that she became empowered by the time vortex in The Parting of the Ways. Her return in Journey's End was the icing on the cake. I can't see the appeal. She's a fucking Doctor fangirl, for crying out loud! A Time Lord groupie.Jade Falcon wrote:I haven't watched it since it's inception, I've caught up with some of the older ones on DVD, and I've thankfully been spared Bonnie Langford, but she is still one of the most overused and overrated companions in my opinion and Piper really doesn't add anything significant to the show. Re: News on Tennants last Dr Who
I liked Rose when she was appropriate to be there. The constant foreshadowing she has had even when she was gone however is something I distinctly dont like.
I would expect this appearance to be the very last we will see of her for sometime at least. They are doing this to send Tennant off which is a pretty big milestone for the new series and deserves the kind of 'companion fest' that Journey's End attempted. Tennant gone, the Doctor regenerating and her human Doctor finally cuts her loose from the series, alternate universe or not.
That said, the lingering nature of companions in the new series kinda appeals to me since it keeps a persistant feel to the show rather than drop em off in ass fuck nowhere and never hear from them again approach. My only problem with Rose lies in the fact she dosent offer anything other than being a love intrest for the Doctor which will never be allowed to develop unless they finally decide to end Doctor Who once and for all which makes it a dead thread.

Re: News on Tennants last Dr Who
I was generally was fine with Rose, although the fact of the matter is that the series for better or worse had decided to perminantly cut the two off twice. Bringing her back is unessisary and does not serve much of a purpose.
(Rant)-However, what i can say about this season of Doctor Who is that it better fucking NOT end with Daleks/Cybermen suddenly comming back from the grave with a huge fucking army able to take over the world only to be instantly removed from existance via deus ex machina five minutes before the end credits. If they do bring back the Daleks, i would like to see something along the lines of the Daleks in Manhatten, a small group of Daleks making use of minions to try to resurect the Dalek Race, albeit with any sucsess being small scale, not enough to conquer the galaxy, but enough to restore them to some degree or another.-(Rant)

I really wouldn't put too much stock in that article, it seems to be nothing more substantial than a rumour. Unless Digitalspy has a particularly good record for being right on stuff like this, which I'm not aware of.
"We will build cities in a day!"
"Man would cower at the sight!"
"We will build towers to the heavens!"
"Man was not built for such a height!"
"We will be heroes!"
"We will BUILD heroes!"

Equally as appalling is that, that article suggest Donna will return along with Rose. That's two companions that were never supposed to be able to return an AU or without frying their brains. At least Martha's return would make sense in some scenarios, her being a UNIT officer.

Re: News on Tennants last Dr Who
Rose got old quite a bit after some time, I could really do without her, or some of the other companions (even though I really like Donna). I was hoping for a fresh one, some new blood infusion...

Martha also wouldn't be all doey-eyed over the Doctor every time he said something. . They might decide to add those as well though, going with RTD's idea these days of "everything and the kitchen plunger" for finales.

Re: News on Tennants last Dr Who
Given the ending of Season 4, I'd be very unhappy if either Donna or Rose returned. They've locked away Rose absolutely with her Doctor and another multiverse destruction scenario (which gave Rose's return a bit of cover to start with) would be hard to take. With Donna, they've basically said she dies if she remembers.Crazedwraith wrote:Equally as appalling is that, that article suggest Donna will return along with Rose. I wouldn't mind seeing Martha return with the same personality as at the end - spunky, and tough minded.
In general, I liked Rose, but wished they didn't return her to the show. Time to move on. Didn't mind Martha's return nearly as much but then her exit wasn't as absolute to start with and she came back with a tougher minded approach that she had at the very beginning.
Re: News on Tennants last Dr Who
Yeah, I would agree with that. Time to move on. Rose's return was a great big flop when it comes to story purpose and character assassination in one, so I'll be more than happy if they decide to just not use her anymore.

Maybe moreso with this, there was so much damned foreshadowing of her return which I wasn't particularly happy with anyway that when it did happen it was really an anticlimax.Thanas wrote:Yeah, I would agree with that. Another thing I've noticed about New Who, that all shows can be guilty of to a certain extent, but New Who in particular is that they don't handle their two parters very well. The first part generally builds up the suspense and plot while the second seems either a rush affair, or that they didn't really have enough plot to cover a second episode.

I would disagree with that as far as S1 and S2 are concerned with regards to Nuwho. It only started when S3 and S4 followed the same formula - a huge lead with "OMG. Impossible situation to overcome" that then is followed with "Eh...turns out it wasn't that bad of a situation due to [insert technobabble or fanwank here]".Another thing I've noticed about New Who, that all shows can be guilty of to a certain extent, but New Who in particular is that they don't handle their two parters very well. Re: News on Tennants last Dr Who
Rose Tyler was OK, but having to deal with her tedious family dramas really shortened the time to her use-by date. Bringing her back after Canary Wharf was simply asinine, but then so was everything else in the dog's breakfast that was "The Stolen Earth/Journey's End".

Is it wrong that I just don't care? Nerdlings gnashing about things like 'characters' and 'drama' getting in the way of their science fiction is done to death over in the nBSG thread, but really, DW has been shit for two years. Shock, it's not getting better any time soon. Shock, RTD is a hack.

Eh? Sorry, but I do not think you have a point here. By that logic, they might just rename it the "Jack Harkness show" or "RTD has a hard-on for his inventions and cannot part with them" show. The problem is far from being restricted to Rose alone.

A country isn't a rock. It's not an extension of one's self. It's what it stands for. It's what it stands for when standing for something is the most difficult! - Chief Judge Haywood

Re: News on Tennants last Dr Who
I think he has one. She's just too much compared to the others. I still can enjoy Jack Harkness, Martha, or Donna. And I very much liked inventions like Harriet Jones.Thanas wrote:Jade Falcon wrote: I don't know why they don't just rename it to "The Rose Tyler show" and be done with it.
Eh? Sorry, but I do not think you have a point here. By that logic, they might just rename it the "Jack Harkness show" or "RTD has a hard-on for his inventions and cannot part with them" show. The problem is far from being restricted to Rose alone.
But the others were just a bit "here and there" compared to Rose "Super Doctor Angst" Tyler. Even when she wasn't there, the Doctor was angsting all around Rose left and right, come Martha or Donna or the end of the world...

Pretty much. I didn't have anything against Rose from the get-go, though at first when I heard that Billie Piper was playing the part i'll admit my expectations weren't high but she did well enough in Eccleston's time and in Tennants first season. It was only after that that I think the Rose obsession got far too much, the blame of which lies at the feet of other people, most likely the producers.Dahak wrote:I think he has one.
