Invade North-Korea?

And may I also point out we would LOSE, SK can't trade space for time and the million man army is pretty well equiped for a Conscript Army
Not to mention besides Seoul every single Aircraft field and military staging area is with Artillery Range
Your talking about one big turkey shoot for both sides, They have enough Artillery to toss a fourty mintue barrage on Seoul switch to airfields for half an hour, then back to Seoul for another ten minutes and they certinatly have the ammountion to shell the other country into the ground(Somthing they knew since the 70s, Burn SK to the ground then invade)

How is this:
The US (and for token support whomever else wants to send ships) parks the carriers offshore. They tell NK to quit with the nuclear weapons or else. NK tells em to bugger off so the US conducts one single massive cruise missile/stealth raid on all the known nuclear facilities. At that point the US luanches several SLBM's over NK and says if the North Koreans so much as look funny at the south they next ones will carry thermonuclear weapons.
Yes I know nobody in power will go for it, and I'm assuming some semblance of sanity for the NK leadership, but do you think a massive show of force coupled with nuclear threat if conventional reprisals against SK occur would stop the NK from retaliating?

I doubt MAD will hold with North Korea. The only way to ensure the safety of Seoul would be to completely waste NK with nukes.

A million starving men is little threat. In reality they have more like 25 divisions fit for action. They have no modern armor and 1950's air defenses. The South has nearly as many active army troops as the US does total, along with two million reserves.Mr Bean wrote:And may I also point out we would LOSE, SK can't trade space for time and the million man army is pretty well equiped for a Conscript Army

There are no military air fields within range of northern artillery save SCUD's. And there advantage in gunnery is not that great, about 11,000 weapons vs 4,000 with ten times better fire control and modern counter battery radar. The North still uses 1960's methods and radars. WW1 showed how huge amounts of artillery fire could accomplish nothing. But a few well directed shells could be very devastating.
Inflicting heavy damage on Seoul wouldn't be part of any plan, its the prize that would make an invasion worth while. They'd shell it, but mainly to disrupt its airport and bridges.

From what I've heard, it's pretty much already been repealed. I believe Japan is rearming right now. Is that a good thing? Yes, because within the next several years there will be someone right there in Asia who can counter NK and Chinese aggression. Hell, a fully rearmed Japan would probably have more technologically advanced forces than the US.kojikun wrote:If Japan was attacked I think their constitutions anti-war section would be repealed in less then a second. Seriously, Japan would be pissed is NK attacked them. And I doubt anyone would care if they occupied NK this time around.

Many of you seem to be truly afraid of North Korea. Tell me, do you really think that country will commit national suicide? Any nuclear strike on Japan, Hawaii, or Alaska would result in the decimation of NK, COMPLETELY. Let's not forget who's sitting in the White House. Bush would incinerate every square inch of Kim's little wannabe megapower. If they struck first using nukes, he could claim the moral high ground with no problem.

Except they have a mutual non aggression pact neither has ever violated, despite China claiming all of the Korean peninsula. Neither side has significant forces beyond those controlling illegal crossings on its boarders. They also supply most of China food and much of its now meager fuel imports.kojikun wrote:the US and UN would get into NK just as China is putting the last NKer into the ground. China would blow NK back to the stoneage long before the US could retaliate.
The Chinese are in no position to launch a major ground war now, there army is for the most part little ahead of north koreas though they do have food. A nuclear war wont happen because the North could never launch against China and China has no reason to fuck over relations with the west.

Dont genralise. A lot of the resitance to US plans has nothing to do with imperialism, blood or oil, or what have you, it has more to do with the US being myopic about the long term consequences of its actions.RedImperator wrote:
By the way, we're falling all over ourselves trying to start a war with Iraq precisely to prevent this same situation from happening in the Middle East. All this leftist blather about imperialism and blood for oil ignores that inconvenient little fact.
There is nothing wrong with getting rid of Saddam, or Mugabe or any other dictatorial wanker, but a little thought about how, when and the law of unintended consequences, goes a long way.

Please don't invade. I have a very good friend living on an army base near Seoul. I've dated her once, then bade her a very heartfelt goodbye as she went with her colonel father to Korea.

As much as I'd hate to see anything happen to your ladyfriend, I think you know an invasion couldn't be avoided just because someone you fancy is over there. Sorry.jaeger115 wrote:Please don't invade. I have a very good friend living on an army base near Seoul. If it does come to blows on the peninsula, just cross your fingers and hope nothing happens to her.

North Korea is no Iraq -- they're much more numerous and armed to the teeth, and the North Korean terrain and winter weather are quite forbidding. What's more is that the Imnun Gun is raised from birth to loathe Americans (young N. Korean soldiers are told that US soldiers suck the blood from POW's they capture), so their devotion and will to fight would be fanatical. The N. Korean people are also taught that American soldiers will kill everyone for no reason, annihilating every man, woman, an child. Since they've no way to obtain opposing information, they've no reason to believe differently than what they're told by the state.
