COME CANISSIA
Coyote wrote:You too," Arik said, glad he could relax again. "I.. uh, look, I feel I need to apoligize for the way my Parliament flipped out over the CATO thing. It's part of our history-- the Communists in Canissia, long ago, had a violent revolution that ended in civil war... so we still have a lot of people here that see Communists as a big threat, always trying to undermine Canissia. The Nationalists and Royalists in particular are jumping at the Red shadow all the time."

"Aha," Shroom said, "So, when they see a big, huge super-bloc of Communoid nations forming in the east, they naturally think that Canissia a the target for undermining," he said, quietly pleased at his on-the-spur coining of the term "communoid".

"Precisely," Arik said, "I've heard all kind sof conspiracy theories... that CATO wants to unite the entire Old Continent in Red Revolution. Now, with Shroomania on our south-west, some of our more conservative members feel encircled. Surrounded."

"But CATO is primarily concerned with real threats," Shroom pointed out, "Like Japanistan. And Byzantium has a potential border with Japanistan interests in his south."
"Oh, I know," Arik said, "I'm worried about sushiland myself. And I understand why Heraclius wants assurance from both MESS and CATO, or the SNC as it was called, since he's on the doorstep... and doesn't want to become a doormat."
"A sushi doormat," Shroom put in.
"That reminds me," Arik said, "We'll need sushi for lunch tomorrow. Now I have a craving."

"So, you're also going to expand your military?" Shroom asked.
"Yeah," Arik replied, sipping at his brandy, "I'm using the CATO scare to my advantage. I wanted a Naval expansion program, and some more Army programs, and the Parliament originally outvoted me on it. Now, the economy is better and I have this 'big threat'," he said, using 'air quotes', "...to stir some action. And of course I can expand the spending on the solid-state lasers and get the Greens on board, since they don't produce waste like the chemical-based THELs did."

"So who's left out in the cold?" Shroom asked.
"Labor," the King replied, "I can form enough of a coalition without them, though, at least for this. Besides," he said with a smile, "Their lack of enthusiasm is only half-hearted. Their political base, my factory and dockworkers, stand to benefit from a defense buildup. So..." the King said, leaning back, "I guess it is my job to tell you, as the goodwill man from CATO, that there'll be a defense buildup and some rancorous rhetoric from my Nationalists, but it's all thunder and bluster for domestic consumption..."
"Oh well, I guess that's totally fair," Shroom laughed. "My homeboys might see that as escalation, but as long as we both keep a reign on things and go on with our cunning plan and keep on winking and nudging at each other, we can probably keep our respective Parliaments in place and prevent things from becoming too insane. Man, we're totally such clever cool cats!"

"Politics, my friend, is one hell of a game," Arik spread his arms and leaned back. "I'm sure your friend Sidney Hank could've told you all about that."

"Eh, nah!" Shroom dismissed. "He was too busy telling me all about going Rambo and blowing Coilerburger tank battalions up."

"I thought it was just one tank," Arik raised an eyebrow.

"Well, he was very drunk with sake. He was talking all about the Coilerburgers and the goddamn Communoids."

"Goddamn Communoids," Arik chuckled and swirled his liquor glass.

"Goddamn," Shroom laughed. "I wonder how I got my people to get into the whole CATO program. We're just about as capitalistic as you guys and we've had our own fair share of past problems with the goddamn Communoids and those Crimsons. Why, back in the past... why, it was practically Cold War. It was only after we started thawing stuff up, Stas and I, that things got better.

"When the Pathogen War got really bad, the Crimsons actually helped deflect some of the Shepistani missiles aimed our way, and I guess after that, we basically realized that with all the crazies, we had to back each other up - commie scum or capitalist pig-dog. Some didn't take easy to it, decades of being dicks to each other and all that, but it helped that we were all buddies with Byzantium and PeZookia," Shroom went on. "I guess if we, Shroomania, helped Canissia ease up with CATO, we could make things a bit cooler between the power blocs?"

"That could work," Arik nodded and gulped his booze. "Might take a while, but it'd still be progress - slow and soft, rather than hard and fast, but in this case that might work better. And you're right, better you than Comrade Stas as Goodwill Ambassador!"

"I've got a cunning plan, man." Shroom said, holding up his index finger and being all clever-like.

"Yeah?" Arik asked.

"Your Labor dudes are most concerned with the factory and dockworker guys? Well, I've been thinking something over and have been meaning to ask you something..."

"Ahuh?"

"What if, say, we go building bridges between Canissia and CATO, for the betterment of brotherly brevity? I've been thinking of starting out an initiative between Canissia and Shroomania, one of your friendlier CATO neighbors that's not all Communoid like the Crimsons and Shadows.

"An initiative that's like our butt-shaped Chunnel, but on super-steroids! Linking Shroomania directly to the Old Continent by connecting it to Canissia, and then through Canissia, making roads and rails and other awesome infrastructures to the rest of the OC sans Sushiland. We can connect Shroomania and Canissia by a second bigger, larger, stronger and faster Chunnel! With lots of ferries too! And maybe even a HUEG bridge!" Shroom stood up and declared. "Call it the Cross Canissian-CATO Continental Connection! An unprecedented megaproject for the future! Everybody wins!"

The Coup (IV)

The King sat in the office he had been in at the time of his ‘arrest’ by the Republican Rebels, a feeling of nostalgia washing over him. While the various advisors and factions played out arguments in a repeated ad nauseam show, the King had much more important things on his mind. Specifically, he had to deal with the traitorous ‘Senate’ that had chosen to support the anarchists that had led the charge for his autocratic original regime.

His choices were clear; he could execute them, exile them, or do nothing. Of those options, execution would be the one he would always favour, as it was the one that would show the force his regime had, yet, these were capable administrators, and they could be of use, until suitable replacements could be found. This conundrum had been the major point of his mental discussions since his ascension, he was so engrossed in thought, he had ignored the direction the discussion in the chamber was taking, and in the middle of heated debate, stood up and handed the signed execution papers to a guard.

“So, Your Majesty, how will you be doing it?”

“Doing what, General?”

“Appeasing both the Isolationists, and the Military, whom I’ve assured you are the second coming of Christ to. That.”

“Ah, that.

Image

“Tell me, General, what is, in your opinion, the path the Royal Vinish Armed Forces should take.”

“Well, as hard as it is for me to say this, I do believe we should focus on the Air Force, the CFR campaign showed just how important air power is in modern warfare.”

”Exactly, which is why we’ll be taking Gizmonic back to its roots,” The King pointed at one of the guards, “Call up the board of directors for the Gizmonic Institute.”

“Yes, Your Majesty.”

“Also, we will be amassing a program to purchase, design, build, lease, a new system of rocket defences, no need for the army to not benefit from the air. Gizmonic will handle securing us with new planes, and we will work on creating new rockets for the army.”

“And the navy?”

“Our ships will survive the day, so long as that is the case, the navy shall see that its forces are maintained, but for the moment, nothing more.”
This is an empty country and I am it's king, and I should not be allowed to touch anything.

The Ring

People's Victory, Shadow Republic of Sjenska, Worker's Way

The radio cars came screaming into the cobbled street, followed by two wheeled APCs They came to a stop before a house with the red door, and heavily armored, masked militsia stormtroopers poured out, while uniformed patrol officers set up a perimeter. The stormtroopers blew the door apart and charged in, weapons at the ready. A couple of ambulances arrived at the scene moments later.

It took them mere minutes to sweep the house clear, and their commanders watched the video feeds with utter horror. The massacre looked horrible, with bodies and shell casings everywhere.

"Command, this is Team One. I think we've found colonel Belic.", one of the stormtroopers said over the radio, entering an upstairs living room, "And a survivor! We've got a survivor!"

The militsia commander signalled for medics. They grabbed a stretcher and ran inside, circumventing bodies in the antechamber. The survivor was a girl, sobbing and unresponsive, hiding in the corner of the living room. The room itself bore marks of fighting, with bullet holes in walls, blood on the floor and two bodies.

"There are more girls in other rooms.", a militsia stormtrooper reported, "Six or so. All handcuffed to their beds."

"Mary mother of God...", his commander exclaimed and grabbed his radio, "Command, this is Team One. The place appears to be some sort of slaver hideout or prostitution hole. We'll need more ambulances."

"The colonel is dead", one of the medics announced after checking Belic for life signs, "He was beaten, severely, and shot in the heart."

"This one was tortured.", another medic shouted out, this one checking Pietia, "Then shot."

The stromtrooper commander looked around at the devastation, "Who the hell could've done that?!"

People's Victory, dockside

The warehouse was unremarkable: run down and in poor maintenance, it was rented by some private company or another which wasn't yet nationalized by the new government. So far, it escaped the attention of authorities: and all the better, for it contained a processing facility for women being 'readied for export'.

The place was a hub of a massive operation which took the place of Boguslav Miksevich's business in Sjenska after the Shadow takeover. Funded by high profile foreign buyers, it had similar holding facilities in many countries of the Old Continent, trafficking dozens of women daily. They had politicians and authorities in their pockets.

But right now, they had a problem.

"Listen to me, Karic. You're in way over your head. We had an arrangement, and you haven't carried out your end of the bargain!"

The expensive stratellite phone only carried a harsh laugh.

"You really shouldn't threaten me, boy. I dealt with worse people than you...now listen to me..."

"No, Karic", Alexander Popovich, The Ring's regional manager, interrupted the most feared man on the Continent, "It's you who will listen. We took the girl on your comission. You were supposed to pick her up four days ago, and you didn't. That was the deal, and you failed to deliver ,and now a dozen of my men are dead! You don't try to pull such things on us."

"Oh. I see your point.", Karic's tone changed suddendly, but there was underlying sarcasm still audible, "I apologize. My men will be there to pick up the girl shortly."

Popovich said nothing, wondering what the hell just happened. This was odd. Supremely odd, in fact...

A sudden burst of automatic fire interrupted his thoughts. He spun around, reaching for his gun, but for some reason, he kept the phone next to his ear. The firefight was picking up pace, with the short controlled AK bursts occasionally interrupted by sporadic pistol fire.

Karic laughed over the phone, "Oh, here they are. With your payment no less."

Alexander threw the phone against the wall in anger and ran out of his office onto the warehouse floor. The moment he did that, however, the lights went out.

People's Victory, dockside, ten minutes later

"The warehouse is secure, sir.", a man clad in a weather jacket and wearing night vision goggles reported through his own stratellite phone, "We've got the girl."

"The perimeter?", Karic asked from his end of the line

"We're establishing it now. When she comes here, we'll know when she appears within a hundred meters."

"Good. Make sure you're ready when she does."

The man nodded, looking around the warehouse floor. His subordinates were dragging off bodies, setting up remote sensors and locating good firing positions around the massive building. All of them seemed very professional, though wearing civilian clothes.

"We won't fail you, sir. The bitch will get what she deserves for betraying you."

"I do not doubt it. Make sure I can see her die."

Result: Dun dun DUNNN!

PEARL POINT NAVAL BASE, CANISSIA

Image

"Good evening, this is Chip Chipler of WCAN news service, reporting live just outside the Naval base at Pearl Point.

"In an unexpected move yesterday, the combined Naval Task Force Cain, Expeditionary Force 2 it is normally called, was surged out of port on short notice, with no explanation from the King or the Defense Ministry.

"It has now come to our attention here at WCAN that leaves have been cut short for the 3rd Expeditionary Force, under the command of Fleet Admiral Inka Olie, and that all sailors, Marines, and airmen of that task force have been called back to their base.

"On a possibly related note, all Royal Navy submarine forces have been placed on short notice, and two Seawolf-class submarines have been seen taking on supplies for an extended mission.

"No explanation has been given for the sudden naval activity, and in fact no orders have been issued for these follow-on forces to actually go anywhere or do anything. Speculation runs rampant, from a sudden readiness exercise, to rumors of involvement in the Vinish coup. Requests for interviews have gone unanswered.

"Once again, this is Chip Chipler, of WCAN news, at Pearl Point Naval Base, Canissia."

"I..." Arik thought about it, shaking his head to erase the image he'd seen of a big, pulsing, phallic train entering the giant 'Hind Tunnel'... "I have to admit, I like that idea. A lot. Building bridges-- both real and symbolic at the same time."

"A vast rail link," Shroom said, "All through PeZookia... it'll be awesome. A rail road all the way through CATO and Canissia..."
"The Cross Canissian-CATO Continental Connection," Arik rolled the idea over in his mind, "The C5 Rail project. Of course, it'd take days to go across that much distance."

"We could have... hotel trains," Shroom said, "Luxury hotel trains! With bars, and restaurants, and round beds with red silk sheets and mirrors on the ceiling that spin, and lava lamps..."
"And the best thing," Arik said, "There could be..."
"WHORES! On the train!" Shroom said excitedly, "Yes! Get your rail ridden while you ride the rails!"
"Whores, pole-dancers... you name it."

"And maids," Shroom said, "maids that do extra service."
"In little crepe-paper French Maid uniforms," Arik said.

"There'd be a pool car," Shroom added, his imagination running wild, "With pool boys."
"And overhead sunlamps... or just skylights," Arik said, "Selling your body lotion to poolside travelers."

"I'm getting excited just thinking about it," Shroom said. He was, indeed, getting excited just thinking about it.
"I'll call the belly dancers back in..." Arik said, and snapped his fingers... "We should expand this service to other things, you know," the King said as the belly dancers entertained Prime Minister Shroom.

"Like what?" Shroom asked.
"A fleet of super-mega luxury airliner Zeppelins," Arik said. "Flying to tourist destinations around the world. We should build the biggest, grandest Zeppelin ever and send it on a round-the-world tour. I'm sure our national flag carrier, CanissiAir, would love to be involved."

"CanissiAir?" Shroom wheezed, his shoulders, feet, and scalp being massaged by belly dancers while drinking brandy, smoking a fine cigar, and relaxing in the most comfortable chair ever. I've been a good boy; I've gone to Heaven... he thought somewhere in the dark recesses of his mind. "CanissiAir... that sounds... familiar..."

"They had some trouble, awhile ago, about a year..." Arik said with a frown, "CanissiAir Fligth 815 went down with all hands, on a return flight from the Old Dominion. We found the wreckage deep in a ocean crevasse far off course, near the Impact Archipelago."

"Bummer," Shroom moaned.
"Indeed. A Zeppelin would not have had such bad luck," Arik said.
"Zeppelin," Shroom muttered. Arik smiled.

"Take good care of him, ladies," he said, and left Shroom to the wiles of th ebelly-dancers... "G'night, buddy," he said with a smile.

WCAN NEWS, CANISSIA

"Hello, everyone, and good morning. This is Chip Chipman, from WCAN news, and here's today's top story.

"It has become clear in the last 36 hours that the Royal Navy buildup is on a definitive route for the Vinlands. This morning, Defense Ministry officials announced that they are concerned about the situation in the Vinlands and are prepared to offer assistance to stabilize the situation until the will of the people can be determined in light of the unexpected change in power.

"Meanwhile, it has been learned that several Navy ships on patrol were also diverted to the region, and several other military units within Canissia have been placed on alert in case they are needed for what the Ministry calls 'peacekeeping and stability efforts'.

"King Arik Coyotus is expected to make an announcement later today about the Crown's position and intent on the matter.

"The Vinlands was the site of several Canissian trade colonies, in the mid 1700's, at the time sponsored primarily by the Barony of Caprica and the Merchant's Guild, however, Canissia has not had a direct hand in Vinish affairs since the early 1800's.

"The King will be sending envoys to MESS and FTO nations to try to form a coalition of concerned states willing to confront the situation with negotiations, and if necessary, sanctions, or to provide observers for a vote to be held that will allow the will of the people to be expressed.

"This is Chip Chipman, reporting..."

Meanwhile, in the Vineyards…

Image

New Sheoth, The Vineyards

The NFT embassy sure didn’t look like a diplomatic mission. Instead it looked pretty much exactly like a gigantic shopping mall, sitting right in the middle of the city’s busiest shopping district. Which was of course because it was a gigantic shopping mall: the Trust had elected to sell off the dilapidated mansion that once housed the Coilerburg mission to take over the old San Doradan “embassy”.

Setting up an embassy as a shopping megaplex had several advantages. Since the mission enjoyed the extraterritorial status of all embassies none of the shops had to pay Vineyard taxes, permitting the businesses here to compete quite unfairly with local rivals. Low prices lured thousands of customers each day, allowing the embassy to turn a tidy profit each year. And last but not least it was a good way to advertise the myriad wares of San Doradan -and an increasing number of Coilerburger- companies.

Still, the complex was also a diplomatic mission. It would take an astute shop-a-holic to notice, but there were subtle differences that set this mall apart from local competitors. Perhaps most visible were the mall guards, actually highly trained NFT Army soldiers in disguise. A series of carefully concealed gates and blast doors could lock down the entire complex in a matter of seconds. An emergency bunker was located underneath the parking garage, and a forest of antennas and satellite dishes on the roof facilitated highly secure telecommunications uplinks back to the NFT headquarters in San Dorado City.

And finally, the top floor of the mall housed diplomatic offices and was largely off-limits to the public. It was on that top floor that Ambassador Susan O’Neill was currently teleconferencing with Charlie Duquesne, the NFT’s Commissioner for Foreign Relations.

“The ‘Zookians have pulled out”, O’Neill reported dutifully. “So have a bunch of other nations. The Xians and Shinrans seem to be staying put though. What are we to do?”

Duquesne rubbed her chin. “We’re staying, and that means you're staying. Sorry, Susan. President wants to play this strictly by diplomacy, same way we did during the coup in Coilerburg. NFT’s got too much invested in the Vineyards to make a principled stand, we’re in no state to go to war, and this is formally an internal matter”, she summed up.

O’Neill nodded. “I assume we’ll covertly be offering King Brandon our assistance?”

“You assume correctly.”

“Anything else I should know?”

Duquesne's face darkened. “Birds in orbit and our people in Shroomania are picking up lotsa chatter coming from Canissia. They’ve sent an expeditionary force your way, but we’re not exactly sure yet what for.”

The ambassador frowned. “You think they want to forcibly effect a regime change? Reinstate King Brandon by force?”

The commissioner just shrugged. “We don’t know yet. Maybe. You better prepare for the worst. The Canissian king's convened a coalition of concerned states and called for negotiations and sanctions…”

“Negotiate with an expeditionary marine force just off the coast?” O’Neill smiled wryly. “I bet Mr. Jeffrey will love that.”

Duquesne just smiled. “Well it could conceivably speed up diplomacy a fair bit, couldn’t it? Anyway we’re set to join this coalition. And Susan, if it looks like it’s going to be war, I want you to lock down the place and sit tight, alright? No risks, just head for the bunker. It’s an outside chance, but the Vineyards are a member of the nuke program…”

O’Neill went pale. “Do you really think…”

“No. No, I don’t. But like I said, better prepare for the worst. This could take a while to resolve, especially if it comes down to sanctions.”

The ambassador smiled wanly. “Well this is a mall. We shouldn’t have any supply problems just yet.”

“Good. Susan, I have a few other things I have to attend to, but my people will keep you updated and I’ll call again in a few days.” The commissioner smiled fondly. “And when this is all over you can fly up here and we’ll have a good laugh about it.”

“I’ll do that. Bye Charlie.”

“Bye Susan.”

Result: San Dorado the NFT is staying put in the Vineyards. We join Arik's coalition, but will be pushing for a strictly diplomatic solution (whilst simultaneously supporting King Brandon with whatever he need, we're two-faced like that). Economic pressure is not out of the picture, though.

Imperial Chronicles

"Do you foresee any.. racial tensions in Hadhramara?" asked Heraclius on the telephone.

"I'm not sure. Al-Kim has gotten worried about some of the more firebrand tribal heads. Seems that they are sending their own militia men down south," said Saladin.

"Can't he speed up the armed forces integration?"

Sighing, Saladin replied, "Sadly, it's been a slow process because those tribal leaders who are down right obstinate. I'm not sure if things will flare up."

"You will need to bring them to heel."

"Yes I have to. We might need to send our own troops."

"This could get ugly," warned Heraclius.

"What can I do? They are pretty tribalistic, and recently expansionist. Religion isn't strong enough bond to keep them from getting at each others' throats, and now they are itching for fights to prove their faith."

"Bloody endless cycle of violence."

"Indeed. I will .. try to get Al-Kim to be firm on this matter."

"Be sure he does."

Constantinople Times

Major Army and Air Force exercise near Jerusalem.

A major Army and Air Force exercise took place near Jerusalem. Involving the Imperial 1st and 2nd Tagmata and Air Force regiments based in Jerusalem, Arabia and Antioch, over two hundred thousand men were involved in an exercise that spanned the desert. This exercise also marked the first time the B-3 Black Tiger and variants was involved in a live fire exercise.

New cruise missiles?

Reports are circulating that CATO is currently developing replacements for the Kh-15, Kh-101, Kh-65SE and a new larger powered glide bomb based on the glide version of the new KAB-900. A new high endurance missile based on the S-500-F missile is also under development, as well as an update to the Klub II. Details are scarce, but it is believe that the designations for the missiles are Kh-215, Kh-201, Kh-221, Kh-230, and KAB-1100.

From the Ministry of Shroomanian Homeland Affairs in Foreign Territories (SHAFT)

To whomever it may concern,

Regarding the latest transpirations in the Vineyards, the Sovereignty of Shroomania would like to state its extreme disappointment over the recent coup d'etat and the questionable transition of power from King Brandon's government to that of Mr. Jeffrey's.

However, while a diplomatic and mutually amicable resolution to the current matter is most preferred and the Sovereignty would like to offer its hand in internationally mediating any negotiations, the Sovereignty also recognizes that the nation's recent and unscheduled change in government is a strictly internal Vinish affair with a pending resolution.

Therefore, as the matter is purely a domestic and provincial one, the Sovereignty sees no reason to withdraw any diplomatic personnel from its fringe world embassies. Business in the Vineyards, as they say, carries on as usual.

Signed,
Lord Melchett McMeistervater

Statement from the Byzantine Consulate in the Vineyards

The Emperor of the Roman Empire has decreed that the Roman Empire does not recognise the Government of the Usurper Jeffrey, and instead continues to recognise the lawful heir to the throne, King Brandon. The Usurper Jeffery, in the view of the Emperor, is the lowliest scum on earth, for daring the unseat the rightful ruler of the realm. He should surrender the throne immediately, and submit to the judgment of the King Brandon.

Long Live Khan Alan!

Jerusalem Space Center, May 1st 2009, 0903 hours (Shroomwich time)

A line of Byzantine police in riot gear surrounded the Crew Preparation Facility, separating it from massive, cheering crowds. Police helicopters circled overhead, chaisng away nosy news choppers who seemed intent on bviolating the closed airspace above the JSC.

When the small electric shuttle bus appeared before the building, the crowds let out a mighty cheer, anticipating the brave space crew. And they got it - three intrepid astronauts, fully suited up, in their transparent fishbulb flight helmets on, life support packs in their hands. They waved to the crowds as they boarded, and the crowds cheered again, waving little Alan Shroompard flags and transparents.

For Damian Kaklamanis, the spectacle was utterly unreal. He hasn't seen anything like that since the first FASTA manned flight.

"Impressive, isn't it?", a Pegasus executive walked up to the Director, stirring his coffee, "I must say our PR people managed to turn this into a real international event."

Kaklamanis simply nodded, staring at the crowd from his vantage point. They were both enjoying the view from a gallery on top of the Administrative Building.

"Still hung up over the passenger list, huh?"

"Yes. Don't take me wrong, Steven, you did an excellent job promoting FASTA and spaceflight in general, but I won't lie: I still feel that woman is too dangerous to let onboard a spacecraft."

"Well, so is her father. He threatened to torpedo the launch if she didn't get in."

The Director sighed heavily. It was too late to worry about that, anyway.

"Let's get ourselves down to Mission Control."

Camp Kittyhawk Rocketfields, May 1st 2009, 0907 hours (Shroomwich time)

The launch control building was taken over entirely by Pegasus specialists and their FASTA liaisons. God only knew how much the company paid for this flight, but it seems they spared no expense: they even upgraded some of the equipment out of their own pockets. It was virtually guaranteed Pegasus wouldn't make any money from this flight, but it made some sense: such a heavily publicized event would surely spark interest in space tourism. In a way, they invested in the future.

"All crewmembers have arrived at O&C. We are at T-8 hours and counting.", some assistant reported to the launch controller. Technicians were still crawling all over the pad, checking all systems.

"Ice inspection crews report buildup on first stage, sir."

"Hold the countdown. Deicing crews to the pad."

"Aye, holding countdown. DIC to the pad."

The launch controller checked his weather report. The temperatures were very odd today: what should have been a humid, hot Frequesquan day was beginning with high humidity, but low temperatures. Hopefully, once the sun was up, conditions would improve. Otherwise, the launch may be in danger of being cancelled.

In the Operations & Checkout building, the passengers and crew ate a meal, and were now receiving a weather report from their briefing officers. Miranda Moonbeam was giggling throughout the entire morning, talking to herself - to the point where she was checked out for LSD by the flight surgeons. The tests all returned negative results, but Miranda's fellow passengers still felt uneasy.

"He will pay...they will both pay!", she muttered under her breath, not paying any attention at all to the briefing.

Jerusalem Space Center, May 1st 2009, 0955 hours (Shroomwich time)

"Hatch seal positive", Walted Wendt reported from the pad, after securely locking the capsule hatch, "Evacuate ze white room!"

"T minus one hour!", the massive speakers blared for benefit of the crowd. A gigantic clock set up just for the purpose ticked off each second of the countdown. The rocket seemed inert and harmless on its launch pad, almost invisible even from the closest area where onlookers were allowed to stand.

"Communications check complete", a snappy young engineer reported, "We have telemetry from the capsule, and cross-links with Camp Kittyhawk LCC check out."

"Jerusalem Mission Control to launch control centers, our systems are go."

"We copy Jerusalem. Hope all goes well on your first mission."

Everyone present at the Launch Control Center couldn't help but smile: Jerusalem's mission control facilities were brand new, and while staffed by a veteran crew, the centre hasn't yet been tried out. Selene 3 would be the first mission commanded from the ancient city, rather than Comona Island.

The launch moment drew closer and closer, and as it did, chatter between all three control centres intensified. Managers and directors spoke with their assistants and liaison officers, while others ticked off point on their checklists.

"Computers to launch configuration. Starting fuel cell heat treatment."

"Launch functions to automatic control"

"Access arm retracted. Oxygen vents closed. Ground power transition...complete."

"Go for terminal countdown!"

With that sacramental sentence, the rooms fell silent, as all eyes turned to the video feeds. The seconds ticked down, inevitably, and soon the rocket ignited and rode towards the skies with a thundering roar, making even the rowdy crowds pause and admire the spectacle.

"God, please don't let her fuck this up", Damian Kaklamanis could be heard quietly saying as he watched the Lucrelance III soar towards the heavens.

Tick...Tick...Tick...

Ghurd's Goods Delivery Truck, Al Moudkyp Expressway - 45 Minutes to H-Hour

Tomaj al Aribha sat behind the wheel of his truck, grumbling at the typical traffic backup of the Al Moudkyp. He drove the route from Ghurd's warehouse at the city docks to the loading dock of the Palace every two days, and every time he ended up stuck in traffic due to the narrowness of many of Muzaffer's side streets. Police officers harassed him for trying to find an alternate route, tickets were draining his accounts, and he was beginning to get tired of the stress. He did not, it seemed, like Moudkyp. Fortunately, today would be an auspicious day. Within the hour he would make a special delivery to the palace, a shipment of the finest Vineyards wines and Langlian caviar, breads baked that morning in the clay ovens of the Raj, among other expensive, fresh goods. But the icing on the cake would be what lay behind the crates of extravagant foodstuffs; a brand-new Turbanizer cleaning machine, fresh from the factories of Indophal. He would be rewarded handsomely for his deliveries. As the Moudkyp curved toward the city's core, the Palace of the Sultanate came into view, its' spires shining in the dusk light. Inspired by the beauty of his destination, he sped on.

Main Gate, Palace of the Sultanate - 30 Minutes to H-Hour

Janissary-Sergeant Mahmoud al Mahkmoud, an individual of poor name and poorer stature, leaned back in his chair, looking out through the gatehouse windows at the bustling street beyond. He yawned, watching a small child play, bouncing a worn rubber ball between himself and the nearby wall. An old woman shook her head and smiled slightly at the boy as she closed up her naan kiosk, stuffing the last of her day's product into a large basket before turning and making her way to the gatehouse. Every day, she did this; every day, she demanded nothing in return. Mahmoud would, of course, eat the majority of the naan in the basket, sharing little with the other Janissaries on duty, but they'd become used to his gluttony. Mahmoud revelled in the deliciousness and fine texture of the flatbread, quickly finishing it off with a burp. He leaned back into his chair again, putting his feet up on the desk. A few minutes later, the bi-daily semi truck from Ghurd's Goods arrived, driven by the ever-attentive Tomaj. Mahmoud waved him through, the truck driving off to the loading dock beneath the palace's great hall to deliver his goods to the kitchen as the lazy Sergeant settled in for a good hard nap to finish his duty shift.

Main Gate, Palace of the Sultanate - 15 Minutes to H-Hour

Mahmoud, sleeping, did not notice as a young Private of the Janissary Brigade leaned over him to key the gate's secondary opening, allowing a motorbike with two cloaked passengers to speed through before closing it and silently walking away, his pockets jingling. The motorist sped into the Palace complex, disappearing into the many ornate structures with his passenger.

Loading Dock, Palace of the Sultanate - 10 minutes to H-Hour

Tomaj had waited patiently, unloading the container himself with a small pallet lifter. He checked his watch, smiling, as he stepped into the container. He made his way into the darkness of the back, revealing the decade-old, expensive, difficultly-procured .1089-kiloton-equivalent antisubmarine depth bomb. He checked his watch again. Five minutes. Five minutes and his most auspicious day would be complete.

Great Hall, Palace of the Sultanate - Five minutes to H-Hour

Sultan Osman VII sat upon his throne, idly stroking the back of one of his concubines. He watched silently as a small army of servants prepared his evening meal, setting up tables laden with imported delicacies. He ate happily as concubines brought him plates and bowls and glasses of delicious food and drink, before a pair of servants wheeled in a shining silver machine, upon which lay a note. He grinned at the sight of the brand-new Turbanizer prototype, a gift, supposedly, from Indophal's ruler. He demanded a servant bring him the note, tearing it open as soon as it reached his hands, and begun to read.

Sultan's Bunker, Palace of the Sultanate - One minute to H-Hour

The masked rider sat with the old man from the shop, smiling at the work of his master plot. He looked upon the man, carefully surgically altered to look like the Sultan down to the precise scars and chipped left eyetooth. He leaned back into the chair, glancing at his watch before beginning to softly speak out loud. "He'll be reading it now", said the rider. "Something like this; 'To the most esteemed, glorious ruler of Klavostan; I give you a gift, though you know not what it is. You believe this machine to be that which has been bestowed upon you, but your tiny mind remains incapable of the faintest of deep thought; I give you, Sultan Osman, the gift of divinity. Allah shall smile upon you as you are delivered unto him, to live by his side forevermore. Die well, Sultan, for in your death you bring your nation into a glorious new future. Die well."

The masked rider smiled, glancing at his watch one last time. "In five...four...three..."

Various Locations, Palace of the Sultanate - H-Hour

Tomaj stood at the control panel of the device, grinning wildly. This was his greatest day, he thought. Never would he have to drive that blasted truck. Never would he have to see that blasted highway. Never would he come home too late to see his children, only to leave before they awoke. He spoke, softly, as he turned the key. "Praise the Emperor."

To his credit, the Sultan was regal in his final moment. Composed and calm, as if this were just another day. He smiled upon his concubines, taking in their beauty as the Great Hall was blasted toward the arms of Allah Himself.

The depth charge, originally designed to sink Shepistani supersubmarines through concussive force, ripped through the heart of the Palace, tearing the Sultan, his concubines, Tamaj, the truck, the palace security control center, and nearly three hundred other servants and atoms limb from limb. In the Bunker, a kilometer away and a hundred meters underground, the masked rider and the impostor-sultan were jostled slightly but otherwise unharmed. The rider smiled as he stood, opening the door and bidding the cloaked impostor, dressed exactly as the Sultan had been, though carefully pre-damaged and singed, to follow. He rushed with the impostor down the escape hallway, back toward the heart of the Palace. Shortly after emerging, the rider caught hold of a passing Janissary, pointing at the cloaked man and excitedly informing him the Sultan was, in fact, miraculously alive and had in fact made it to one of the Palace bunkers in time to survive the blast. The guard sighed with relief and led the Sultan away to safety, as the rider disappeared into the chaos of the devastated Palace.

...Boom.

SEASIDE PALACE, CANISSIA

Image

King Arik Coyotus stepped up to the podium to speak about the Vinish situation.

"Ladies and gentlemen of Canissia and the free world, I bid you greetings.

"Recently events have unfolded in Vinland that have been cause for alarm; namely, the deposing of King Brandon for the forced emplacement by military coup of 'King' Jeffrey. It should be noted that Jeffrey's regime is not recognized by the government of Canissia. Jeffrey's role as leader of Vinland comes not as a mandate from the people, but from the tip of a spear.

"Therefore, the Kingdom of Canissia is sending a Marine unit to the region for the purpose of securing the evacuation of any foreign national who wishes to leave, and for the evacuation of any foreign embassy staffers who feel threatened. We also stand ready to provide stability and peacekeeping operations in the event that such is necessary. Given the recent and tumultuous events that have plagued the region, the seizure of power by military coup is viewed with great alarm.

"I sincerely hope that force is not necessary; I trust Jeffrey realizes the situation he is in should the Vinish people fail to support his seizure of power-- for it is them that he needs to be concerned with, not any outside force.

"To secure a sense of reassurance and stability, I would like to send a small delegation of Naval and Marine officers to meet with King Brandon, ensure his safety, and negotiate his release, as well as observe the general condition of the Vinish people. Canissia has no bases in the area, so the use of a aircraft carrier was deemed a prudent precaution; our carrier and all escorting vessels have stationed themselves well outside the territorial limit of Vinish waters and will remain there.

"It is my sincere hope that this alarming turn of events can become a non-issue through diplomacy and negotiation. I have received messages of support from the Baernish Confederation and NFT to join the coalition of concerned states for the Vinlands; and it should be noted that numerous other powers have also called this seizure of power illegal, some in words stronger than mine own.

"I look forward to the reply of Citizen Jeffrey. Good day."
Something about Libertarianism always bothered me. Then one day, I realized what it was:
Libertarian philosophy can be boiled down to the phrase, "Work Will Make You Free."

In Libertarianism, there is no Government, so the Bosses are free to exploit the Workers.
In Communism, there is no Government, so the Workers are free to exploit the Bosses.
So in Libertarianism, man exploits man, but in Communism, its the other way around!

Statement from the Huang Di

The Huang Di condemns the cowardly dogs who attempted to murder Sultan Osman of Klavostan. Their attempted murder of a sitting Head of State cannot be countenanced, and should be condemned by all.

I offer the Empire's full support in tracking down and destroying the terrorists who did this. We are willing to hunt them to the ends of the earth, in order to bring them to justice. To this end, I have dispatched a group of Public Security agents to analyze the crime scene.

I hope for the Sultan's speedy recovery, and express sorrow for his loss of so many loyal retainers.

The Coup (V)

Commonwealth News Broadcasting Channel – CNBC

“This is CNBC, broadcasting from our intermediary studios in downtown Shroomston, with breaking news. King Jeffery’s forces in control of the capital have officially executed 37 senators, including Prime Minster Martin Black, for ‘cooperating with an illegitimate regime, and committing treason against the Kingdom.’ These executions are expected to continue, as there are over one hundred senators, and other administrators currently detained by the Royal Army under the command of King Jeffery.

King Jeffery seized power recently after an eleven year lull following his 1998 forced abdication in favour of King Brandon.”

White-Gold Tower, Sheoth Isle, Kingdom of Vineyards

”Next Problem,” the King muttered, he had now gotten used to even this portion of his new job, as much had changed since his previous reign, he had forced himself to change with it. This, having his advisors present him with the problems, was one of the ways he hoped to tackle the new world.

“You Majesty, Gizmonic has refused to accept the contract.”

“Why?”

”They claim it is against the interests of their shareholders. As it may lead to the direct personal harm of the majority shareholder.”

“If Gizmonic wants to play, we’ll play,” loudly, he added, “The Kingdom of Vineyards shall establish the Royal Munitions Company,” and quietly, to the table he said, “condemn the factories of Gizmonic, and make sure that they land in the RMC’s hands.

“Next Problem.”

“Your Majesty, the Kingdom of Canissia is sending forces here, how do you respond.”

“Simply, let them come, we are the legitimate rulers of these lands, if they wish to assist foreign peoples in their flight from reality that is their prerogative, but they will find no fight from us.”

That caught a murmur, some of the more militant members of this ‘council’ were getting nervous, good, thought The King, “That is not to say that we will support their invasion of our territory unconditionally, these evacuation forces will perform their duty, but need not take a step upon the ground of our nation. I have not attempted to close the border, despite the opinions of some of those gathered here. If Canissia needs proof, all her King needs to do is book a round trip flight through this country, and that will prove that I am allowing the people to move freely. Next Problem.”
This is an empty country and I am it's king, and I should not be allowed to touch anything.

The Duke, in a statement earlier today, condemned both the attempted assassination of Sultan Osman of Klavostan and the coup in the Vineyards, refusing to grant the usurper Jeffrey the title of King. Both events, His Grace said, have done nothing to help the stability of the countries in which they took place or the continent, and, we quote, "must therefore be condemned in the strongest possible terms".

Strategic Consequences

NFT headquarters, downtown San Dorado

“Coups, executions, bomb attacks”, the President sighed. “And here I was thinking the continent had improved.”

Commissioner Duquesne looked tired, which was all too understandable considering the hours she made. “Something funny though”, she remarked. “The Huang-Di is really getting his panties in a twist over the attempt on the Sultan’s life. Offered ‘full support’ in tracking down the perpetrators ‘to the end of the world’ and such.”

“Interesting…”

“… yes, particularly considering the way he didn’t give a damn about the turn of events in the Vineyards.”

Sidney grinned. “I guess the Sultan hasn’t lost the ‘mandate of heaven’ yet”, he air-quoted.

The commissioner just rolled her eyes. “Maybe. I wonder though…”

“If there’s more to it? It’s a possibility. We’ll check it out.” The president looked preoccupied. He tapped his fingers on the stone desk and said, “I want you and your people to dust off the plans for Maneuver 1966.”

Duquesne’s eyebrows shot up in surprise. “Really? I mean, do you think that’s really necessary?”

“Maybe. We came damned close to evoking it during the last crisis. The political landscape has changed a lot since we signed the treaty, Charlie. I’m not sure it’s in our best interest to be so tied to the rest of the continent anymore.”

“Still, it would appear as if we’re giving up…”

“And perhaps we are. Face it, we’ve always been a paper tiger, and I tire of these obligations to instable governments. We’ve a responsibility to our shareholders to deliver them the best deal possible, so if our partners can’t get with the program, perhaps it’s time we look elsewhere for a better deal.”

Duquesne gave him a sharp, appraising look. “Hold on. I see what you’ve been doing. The ties with Byzantium and Shroomania, the call-out to companies from Canissia and the Shinra Republic, the CATO base…”

Sidney smiled, but it was a grim smile that didn’t quite reach his eyes. “Got it in one. You’re a smart woman, Charlie. Nations don’t go about changing their strategic affiliations overnight, and this has been a long time coming. And I still don’t know if we’ll go all the way, but we just might have to.”

“Once the avalanche has started…”

“Precisely. So be ready. I’ll brief the rest of the Syndicate tomorrow.”

DIPLOMATIC IMMUNITY

Image

The Shroomanian Embassy - Viera Vinesville, Vineyards

"Mushroom Marines! Stand easy!" Major Malone Mahone barked out. "Gather round and prepare for a bedtime story!"

"Sir, yes sir!" the Mushroom Marines yelled in affirmation, jogging into the study fully decked-out in tactical gear. "Hut hut hut hut!"

Once they were arranged fully, they seated themselves on the floor.

Image

"Now, are you all satisfactorily tucked in bed?" Major Mahone asked sarcastically. "Good! Now, dunk your cookies in a warm glass of milk, cause I is gonna start telling you a fairy take!"

"Sir, yes sir!"

"Once upon a time, there was this weak willy-nilly dick named Brandon who took over this goddamn colonial shithole in a coup where all the village people held hands and stuck flowers up soldiers' rifle barrels, and with all the liberals and communists and hippies got their way, Brandon became King. Thank you, thank you very much.

"Then this goddamn colonial shithole ended up becoming a hole, since in his royal benevolence, King Brandon ruled wisely and shoveled the shit out of this hole. It was a fine and fertile time. But King Bradon, being a willy-nilly dick, well his dick grew limp and now this motherfucker named Jeffery comes about and kicks Brandon's ass and sends him packing.

"Now Jeffery's living the high life in Brandon's palace, bedding all his concubines and siring all sorts of heirs. Well, he would be, if he weren't a queer-o out for some debriefings and cocktails, or so I have heard from the Grapevine. Hah!" Major Mahone cleared his throat and spat a wad of phlegm at the carpeted floor. "But since Jeffery can't get enough satisfaction, he's gone and gone crazy! Liberals are being set on fire in the streets! Communists are being beaten with sticks! Hippies are getting violated left and right, up down and center! Jeffery's shoveling all the shit back into the hole, and he ain't taking no bathroom breaks cause when he takes a shit, he just shovels his triple turds right into the hole!

"So, in short, the political situation here in this goddamn colonial commode is most fucking dire!" Major Mahone concluded to his little boys and girls. "Goddamn these fringe world yokels, don't even know where their loyalties lie! Any goddamn queer quail-assed questions?"

"Sir," Lance Corporal Henriksen raised a hand.

"Yes, Bishop?! Major Mahone barked.

"Well, seeing as you took all the trouble to elaborate the current situation, which we're all intricately familiar with, then -"

"Spit it out, you goddamn synthetic!" Mahone coughed out another wad of phlegm. This time it ended up on the crystal chandelier above them. "How the fuck did that get there?!"

"Sir, we're wondering what exactly our mandate is. What do we do?"

"Not a goddamn thing!" Mahone laughed out loud. "Obey the traditional rules of engagement - fire only when fired upon, and be sure to put two in the chest and one in the head! Keep frosty, and get ready to deck out the anti-tanks and SAMs at any time if so ever these Vinish verdugos go koo-koo, we can succinctly waste those motherfuckers! Get ready for a hasty evac in case we ever run out of bullets. And prepare for one hell of a party! Last one to kill the badguy gets to buy the beer!"

"What about any political refugees who'll try to get into the embassy?"

"Eh, let em. We've got the booze, might as well have some hookers as well!" Major Mahone laughed. He laughed.

28 minutes later...

Lance Corporal Lance Henriksen and Corporal Heirnonymo Hicks popped open a keg of beer and sat themselves on their posts.

"Yep. Here we are," Hicks sighed.

SARAJEVO SIXSHOOTERS' SHROOMANIAN SHOW

Image
The Sarajevo Sixshooters fly to Shroomania.

The PeZookian band famous for its humorous use of Shroomanian shit-rock blended with Crimson orchestrals, outrageous hairstyles and concerts featuring the UCSR's Stanisandrov ensemble - the S. V. Stanisandrov Crimson army twice red-bannered academic song and dance ensemble, otherwise known as the Crimson Army Choir - will begin its world tour with a massive concert in Farbanti, Shroomania set to coincide with Shroomdependence Day.

The Sarajevo Sixshooters were founded when a group of PeZookian rockers, after losing the Battle of the Bands previously held in Shroomania, exiled themselves to an odyssey in the frozen wastes of Siberia - learning Slavic music and winter nomad traditions, and combining this with their trademark Shroomanian shit-rock music, before embarking to PeZookia for the next Battle of the Bands. There, they won their pick of destiny and became an international sensation when their performance was unexpectedly accompanied by the Stanisandrov ensemble - much to the surprise of audience and judges alike.
