MR. CLEAN

Shroomanian technology and aeronautics firms had been contracted to the various aerospace initatives of both Old Continental and Frequesean nations. From FASTA's Selene missions and CATO's Continental Consolidated Contractor Pact, to San Dorado's Silver project.

SchromCorp, (Byzantine Air) MacMillan, and others had operations in a whole plethora of nations - thus, Shroomanian employees were sent abroad and overseas to foreign lands with work ethics and standards different and utterly unfamiliar to those accustomed with the corporate culture of Shroomania. Those sent to more restrictive work environments, such as Arabia, found things more difficult. Even those sent to relatively lax San Dorado found themselves encountering some problems - while the place was very similar to Shroomania, there were still some things that they just couldn't do. Some things they just couldn't do since they couldn't do those not-so-decent things in front of co-workers from other not-Shroomanian corporations.

However, things were looking up for Nekido Nagasaki - a tenth-generation Japanistani immigrant to Shroomania. He had been allowed to return home to Shroomania to continue his work, as the Silver project was expanding its operations into the Old Continent.

Mr. Nekido Nagasaki was an expert on avionics and navigational control computers. So, as always, he suited up and entered the sterilized clean room to work on the sensitive high-technology that would become part of the San Dorado-headed Silver project.

"This is ridiculous! If we were in the Duchy, you'd be more reasonable!" The man shouting at the arms dealer with a slight Baernish accent was dressed in Costa Army-surplus camouflage, with a small tree patch sewn onto the shoulder.

"But we are not in the Duchy, sir. We are here, and if you do not wish the police to become curious about why exactly it is you need fifty rocket launchers, you had best pay my price."

"Fine! Take your damn money." The uniformed man took a briefcase from a similarly dressed associate standing behind him, and shoved it across the table. "We'll pick up the launchers tonight, at the usual time."

"A pleasure doing business with you, Mr. Austin."

The men walked out of the arms dealer's building, entering an unobtrusively-armored SUV that pulled up as the exited. As they settled in, the driver asked:

"Well, boss, how'd it go?"

"Fairly well. We'll get our rockets, but the price will be a bit higher then I'd like. How about the other teams?"

"Two Klavostani mercenary companies are willing to sign on with us, and we've got about three dozen old CSR tanks in the warhouse."

"Don't you mean `warehouse`?" Inquired Mr. Austin, smiling slightly.

"Nope. We changed the name yesterday, didn't anyone tell you?"

"Doesn't matter. Let's go." And with that, the SUV drove off into the darkening streets.

Paradise

Image

Paradise colony, northern Velaria

The helicopter cruiser Silver Dollar slowly maneuvered into the bay at the head of the three-ship flotilla. The surrounding hillsides were covered in the emerald green of the Velarian jungle, with the sole exception of the small island in the middle of the bay.

On the deck of the Makin Bay dozens of men looked warily at the slowly approaching coastline. The 2,000 ton RO-RO shallow draught freighter was built by Blues Brothers for operations in and around Velaria. Rumor had it the ship was based on a design stolen from Japanistan, but no-one knew for sure.

There were men of a dozen different nationalities and backgrounds aboard Makin Bay: Sabikans and Coilerburgers, men from the CFR, from Omago and from Minoy. Former soldiers and rebels, bandits and guerillas. Scum. Some had once been sworn enemies. Few even spoke the same language. But right now they were too busy looking at what was to be their home for the foreseeable future to remember any of that.

On the slowly approaching island concrete structures and watchtowers jutted defiantly from the craggy rocks into the sky. Weather-worn boats and a few waterplanes were tied to quays made of basalt. A faded Coilerburger flag hung listlessly from a brick building on the top of the hill.

“Gentlemen”, Colonel Montgomery had appeared on the bridge railing, megaphone in his hands, voice laden with sarcasm, white beret set on a rakish angle atop his head. “Welcome to Paradise. We dock in thirty minutes, so grab your gear and get ready to move out.” He then repeated the same in several different languages so that everyone understood.

The first soldiers of the Foreign Legion had arrived in Velaria.

Result: A couple hundred rag-tag men have arrived in the former Coilerburger colony of Paradise, off northern Velaria. They will be drilled to form the core of what is eventually to be the first regiment of the Foreign Legion. For the foreseeable future the helicruiser Silver Dollar will be stationed around Velaria as well.

MOHAMMAD JIHAD

Somewhere in Velaria

Mohammad Jihad surveyed the scene around him.

When none of the native mujahadeen had come to meet his men, he had them leave the rendezvous and move into the village that was the base of their Velarian brothers in arms. After hours of trekking, they arrived at the place and found in it a scene of slaughter.

The villagers had been butchered along with their livestock and root crops. Their littering cadavers marked with obscene symbols to the heathen gods of the Odinists and the Kali-cultists, the leftovers of pagan rites that belied their deranged faiths. Out of both human and animal corpses, the cultists had strewn together a grotesque effigy to their profane pantheon's many-armed animal-headed dieties, a tree of corpses - all of them missing eyes.

The obscene sight was painful to look at, induced unknowable sensations of revulsion. Mohammad Jihad told his men to burn it down.

Then they decided to set the whole village on fire.

Midgar, Shinra Republic

"Well, we've gotten assurances from Jeffery's government, sir. So long as we give no cause, they'll leave the base alone."

President Rufus Shinra considered this. On the one hand, it would look good to take the course Cascadia, PeZookia, Canissia, and others were taking. On the other, Brandon himself had come to power through a coup. So the question of 'legitimacy' was not exactly cut and dried. And he liked having the base within an FTO nation, although whether the FTO would keep them around remained to be seen.

It was a tough call, but in the end he felt it was the right one. People would be upset, but he could always tell Steve, Arik, Paul and the others that with his embassy and base there, he could more easily ascertain what was going on than they could, relying on outside sources. And so he had to craft a statement, yet leave it fairly neutral. And throw a bone to the anti-coup people, as well.

A few hours later, he felt he had one.
Statement from the President of the Shinra Republic

The recent unrest within the Kingdom of the Vineyards has caused considerable alarm. However, the government of the Shinra Republic views this unrest as an internal matter. Further, given the history of how the former King Brandon against the present King Jeffery came to power, this government can neither decry nor endorse the actions taken at this time. Instead, the Shinra Republic calls upon the current government of the Kingdom of the Vineyards to hold a public referrendum at the soonest possible time, to ascertain public opinion regarding the change of government. Should this be unacceptable within the framework of the new government, we will work with the Kingdom, through our embassy, on an alternative proposal to assure legitimacy of the government, as well as the protection of their citizen's basic rights.

Further, we have received assurances concerning the Shinra Republic Navy's operations at Syl. The new government has given their promise that the base will be unharmed. As the agreement for the base was signed not with any specific ruler, but with the government of the Kingdom, the base shall remain operational for the forseeable future.
Results:
We're adopting a neutral stance on the issue. We're not really supporting them, nor are we going to oppose them. We will offer them a chance to hold a referendum concerning popular opinion. Of course, if Jeffery's government doesn't think they'll get away with that, we did say we could work on an "alternate proposal" to better conform with the new government's structure to settle the issue. Basically giving wide latitude (though not a blank check) for them to declare legitimacy, at least in our eyes.

Of course, if Brandon comes back into power, we'll do the same for him. Basically meaning whoever can get away with it gets to be "legitimate" in our eyes, so long as they neither A) attack our base or embassy, or B) go overboard with the killing of civilians or the like.

II Corps Deploys to Old Continent

The Shinra Republic Army II Corps has begun redeploying to the Old Continent as part of the 'forward deployed' structure of the new Second Army. The 1st Infantry Division will be based in the People's Republic of Canissia, while the 2nd and 6th Armored Divisions will deploy around Byzantium and Byzantine Arabia. V (Airborne) Corps, also assigned to the Second Army, will remain in the Shinra Republic, while X Corps, newly forming, as well as the Second Army Headquarters, will be deployed within the Old Dominion and the Organization of Impact Crater Archipelego States (OICAS). The Navy's newest carrier, SRS Liberty and leader of Battlegroup Five (BG-5) is also likely to be forward deployed within the OICAS, or at Tian Jiao, though no final word has been given.

In other news, the Shinra Republic's naval base at Syl remains open, despite the recent unrest...[More...]

Artists' impressions of the "al-Moudkyp" at varying stages of its development (pictures obviously not to scale)

ZORIAN BIOLOGISTS OFFICIALLY REVEAL NEW AMPHIBIAN SPECIES IN VELARIA
New salamander found living in Dragonsnake River wetlands

PORT ADRIA, ZORIAN VELARIA - After years of study and observation, Zorian scientists working in eastern Velaria have officially revealed the existence of a new species of salamander living in the wetlands of the Dragonsnake River. One of the lead biologists on the team responsible for their discovery, Klavostani-born Dr. Kamal Aziz, has dubbed them "al-Moudkyp," after the famous Klavostani general, politician, and herpetologist Ali Hassan al-Moudkyp.

The al-Moudkyp is particularly notable for its large size and lengthy developmental cycle. At birth, an al-Moudkyp is approximately .4 m long and weighs 7.6 kg on average; when fully matured, it can be up to 1.5 long and can weigh up to 81.9 kg on average. Fully amphibious from birth, it possesses both lungs and gills throughout all stages of development. It is carnivorous, primarily eating worms, insects, and fish; it has a keen sense of smell and can use the fin (or fins, in the case of a fully matured specimen) on its head to sense changes in wind and water currents. It stores water in its body and can expel it through its mouth with great force when agitated.

The Zorians are still conducting studies on other aspects of the al-Moudkyp's physiology and behavior. More details on this animal will be released as they are discovered and disclosed.

BnL Headqaurters, Port Victory-Today, Zorian Retail Megastar Buy'n Large has announced plans for the creation of a new world headquarters in downtown Port Victory, towering some 1.609 kilometers into the air (1.73 km if one includes the spire), which will also offer apartment space, Hotel Rooms, shoping areas, resteraunts and an unpressidented veiw of the Zorian Landscape. Even more notable was it's design, done by ledgendary architect Frank Wright Lloyd with permission from the Frank Wright Lloyd estate. Only in recent times have building materials have gotten to the point in which the construction of such a building would be possible. Construction will be handled by Zorian Construction firm Dawkins and Wallice. BnL global CEO Shelby Forthwright has declared that this project "Will demonstrate the capabilities of our corperation while standing as a symbol of Peace and inspiring others to strive to meet their full potential."

A Change Of Pace

Image

Somewhere above the Atlantic

The presidential jet supercruised high above the blue waves of the ocean, making best speed for the Old Continent. In the main cabin, Sidney Hank paced back and forth. He experienced an odd mixture of eager anticipation, laced with just a tinge of dread that made it impossible for him to sit quietly. Months- no, years of sly political manipulation and strategic economic management were about to pay off.

I pulled it off was the thought that kept milling through his head. Sweet Lady, I actually pulled it off. It was exhilarating and frightening at the same time. In a few hours he’d shake the world. The NFT was about to take a gigantic leap into a new world. That was the exhilarating bit. The frightening part was that after years of carefully planning to this point, even a political animal like the president couldn’t predict the full extent of the ramifications of what was about to go down.

Worse, over the past few weeks things had spiralled so quickly that the president hadn’t had time to plan for every contingency. That was unnerving. Can’t think of everything. Sidney sat down and pulled a bottle of single-malt out of the bar. He looked at the expensive watch tied around his wrist. Four more hours ‘till Stasograd. The president poured himself a stiff drink and knocked it back, enjoying the all too familiar sensation as the alcohol burned down his throat. Trust the Lady and let Fortune sort it out.

Result: Consider me arrived.

PRIME MINISTER PYRAMID

Image
Giza Garden, Canissia

The Prime Minister stood atop the kingdom's greatest edifice - the monument to an ancient empire that had reigned for more than ten thousand years. The sun was shining and harsh desert wind blasted him, billowing his clothes as he steadied himself atop his massive pyramidal podium. He stood there, atop the Sphinx' deformed face, with the sun in his back, silhouetting him amidst the Great Pyramids that entombed King Arik's forebears.

Oddly enough, Arik's own triangular tomb had not yet begun its construction - mayhaps Canissia's king had no intention of dying - but that was fortunate, as there was no construction site filled with Hebrew slaves to mar the tranquil sight of the Dune Sea and its endless sands.

After taking the prerequisite polaroids with his trusty camera, the Prime Minister pocketed his device and then raised his arms in triumph.

"KING OF THE WORLD!" he hollered. "WOO-HOO!!!!!"

At this epic sight, of the Sovereign of Shroomania in jubilation, the Canissian Serpent Guards merely shook there heads - invisibly, for their heads were under their brass cobra-shaped helmets!

"I wonder how he managed to get up there," Arik wondered to himself. Actually, he himself was surveying the ideal site for which he would dispatch his Hebrew slaves to construct his own pyramid, something the Prime Minister had urged him to do for the sake of being cool. He gave Shroom a mighty wave. "How are you doing there, buddy?"

"WHAT?!" Shroom shouted, unable to hear what Arik was saying since the Canissian King was so far away. Atop the massive Sphinx, the Prime Minister stood tall and beheld everything beneath him.

"HOW ARE YOU DOING THERE, BUDDY?" Arik asked again.

"YEAH SURE COOL!" Shroom replied, unable to really hear the guy.

"COOL!" Arik laughed. "MAN!"

"YEAH!!!" Shroom laughed.

"Huh? My Shroomy sense is tingling!" Shroom uttered as he felt a vibration near his loins. It was his groin-o-phone! He pulled it out in a hurry and flipped it open, and in it was a priority message of highest importance. "Aw mang."

He would have to leave Canissia early to go to Stasograd. Important CATO matters were at hand!

Heraclius boarded the train for Stasograd thinking about what would come next. "A penny for your thoughts, sire?" asked Basilleus.

Long Live Khan Alan!

Low Earth Orbit

The roar of the Lucrelance's final stage engine died down suddendly, and at the exact same moment, explosive bolts ejected the spaceship from its safe stowage position. Boost protective covers split away like flower petals, flying away into space.

"MECO!", Maurizio Cheli reported from his right-hand seat within the Selene capsule, "All systems green"

"Velocity matches the mission plan perfectly, komandir", Svetlana added.

Alan scanned his set of instruments. He was used to the control panels, which to anyone untrained would look like a completely incomprehensible array of lights, MFDs and analog gauges. Satisfied with the result, he clicked on his radio.

"Jerusalem, this is Three. Orbital insertion complete."

"Copy you on orbital insertion, Three. Standby for orbit confirmation."

"And that, people, is how we do that", Cheli commented and grinned, "Damn, that was one hell of a ride."

"Uh, you're still on vox, Three.", the radio squawked.

Alan smiled, seeing Maurizio's expression, "Roger that, Jerusalem."

"Damn!"

Jerusalem confirmed the orbit only a few minutes later, and Selene 3's crew went to work. While the mission would seem to be only a short jaunt into orbit, the capsule was in fact in need of testing: it was much larger than the Soyuz, and while based on proven technology, incorporated many entirely new systems necessary to accomplish a succesful Moon mission.

Camp Kittyhawk Rocketfields, T-2 hours

The rocket's body passed slowly in front of the cage elevator, partially obscured by various cables, inspection bridges and other arcane instrumentation. None of the passengers save perhaps for Miranda were used to the sights, and couldn't help but gawk.

A young pad technician was very helpful in explaining the details and procedures involved in launch preparations, and three out of four passengers listened quite intently. Miranda didn't: not only did she already know most of those things, she felt uncomfortable. The item was rubbing the sides of her colon and causing no small amount of discomfort.

Fortunately, it wasn't found. The folding axe blade taped to her back wasn't found either - and that meant that she'd have her revenge quite soon.

She laughed. Oh, how she laughed.

Camp Kittyhawk Launch Control Center, T-1 hour 30 minutes

The FASTA liaison stared at the Chief Launch Controller with murder in his eyes. Miranda's laughter could be heard across the cabin's comms channels.

"Why did you let her on board again?"

"Relax. She can't harm anybody this time."

The liaison snorted in contempt. Most FASTA technicians resented Miranda fiercely: her "LSD caper" made the space agency a butt of countless jokes throughout the last year.

"Shall we? Timing is key", the launch controller finally said, motioning to the huge screen showing a video feed of the launch pad.

"Yes", the liaison officer said after some brief hesitattion.

Low Earth Orbit

"We have crossed the terminator. Fifty minutes to rendezvous point."

Selene 3 speeded across the heavens. They whizzed above the Old Continent, shining brightly in reflected sun, and screamed down south. Their trajectory would take them close to Antarctica and north again, over Frequesque.

Half a world away, a rocket's engines ignited and carried the Silver Streak orbiter towards space, on top of a thundering pillar of fire. Selene 3's crew would soon witness the spectacle from orbit through their powerful onboard optics, and would of course listen to the radio chatter, both the calm and collected Jerusalem control crew and slightly more excited pilots.

"Staging complete. All systems nominal."

"This is Bellerophon, the ride's getting a little bumpy."

"Copy that Bellerophon. Stand by."

Maurizio snapped photo after photo of the ascending rocket, which looked no bigger than a little spark at the distances in play. Selene quickly overtook the Silver Streak before it managed to reach orbit - all according to plan, of course.

"Bellerophon, this is Jerusalem. Reduce thrust of the main motor by 10% and see if the vibration ceases."

"Uh...copy that Jerusalem. Request adjusted burn time."

"Roger...MECO at T+793 seconds"

"I guess we had our glitch for this mission...", muttered the Silver Streak's pilot.

The mission clock reached the mark suprisingly quickly, and the engines fell silent. The sudden serenity was an incredible contrast to shaky acceleration.

"Folks, this is the captain speaking", Jefferson Clay, Bellerophon's command pilot, adressed his passengers over the intercom, "We have reached stable orbit. At the moment, we are travelling lower than Selene-3 and should catch up to them within less than thirty minutes. The outside temprature is a comfortable -150 degrees celsius, no wind, clear sky. Enjoy your ride!"

Image

Jerusalem Mission Control centre

"Looking good so far.", the Pegasus executive observed from the viewing gallery in the rear of the cavernous control room. He checked his watch, "An hour from now and it will all be over."

"Yeah. Thank God she's not flying the damn thing", Damian Kaklamanis agreed. The orbital tracks of both spacecraft were displayed clearly on the huge central screen, along with estimated rendezvous time.

"Sweet Lady, will you stop talking about the damn Moonbeam girl?"

"I nearly had my agency shut down because of her. I'll stop worrying when she's back in San Dorado."

The executive just shook his head. The director impressed him as a calm and collected man before - the obsession about Miranda he was displaying wasn't healthy. But, perhaps a succesful mission would cure him...

Sudden commotion inside the control room snapped him out of it. Bellerophon's flight surgeon was signalling something to the Director of Flight Operations.

"Uh, Damian? What's going on?"

Kaklamanis walked up to the viewing window, took one look and immediately turned on the intercom. A flood of half-panicked status reports flooded the quiet viewing gallery.

"...heart rate is spiking! I have no idea what's going on!", the flight surgeon was shouting from her station, gesticulating wildly.

"Bellerophon, Bellerophon, do you read me, over?", Dale Gardner, CAPCOM for the mission, tried calling up the orbiter. A response came soon, a garbled, incomprehensible mixture of voices and shouts.

"AGH! They're walking all over me! They're all over me! Help!"

"Hold him down! A little help here! Come on!"

"I can feel the colors! I can feel them!!!"

"Oh my God...it's full of stars!"

Kaklamanis listened to the chaos for a few seconds before slamming his fist into the armored glass.

"GODDAMMIT!"

Pegasus 7 completes a record spacewalk mission

Scheduled to land tomorrow the Pegasus 7 mission has just completed the most individual extra vehicular activites both in times spent and individuals involved in the world. Over the course of 4 days during the 8 day mission all 4 crewmembers were rotated out for a minimum of 2 hours and a maximum of 4 hours straining the limits of human endurance in the continuing effort by the MSA to gain valuable data and experience in human operations in micro gravity. All told the crew put together nearly 14 hours of EVA during the first week of orbit. Now having had a full cycle of rest without planned activities they are preparing to deorbit and return to a celebratory welcome.

Mission planners have noted that this caps a series of increasingly long missions in terms fo both spacewalk complexity and duration because now the focus will shift to orbital manuevers. "We've already proved we can dock remotely if neccessarry," said Gene Krantz the flight director for the Pegasus missions. "However that system is, based on our tests, only about a 50/50 chance for a perfect mating. We need to get pilots trained for manual docking and that will be the focus of the last 3 Pegasus missions."

Pegasus 8 planned for late next month will be extended by a day from typical missions in order to allow for a trailing launch of a dummy payload on a second Delta IV rocket. While the payload itself will be a mockup of the Lunar Landing System payload it will have none of the autodocking features Krantz described and it will be up to the pilots onboard to complete a succesful rendevous and docking unaided. MSA officials have all indicated this is preperatory to the new missions, tenatively labelled Daedalus, that will begin launching after the Pegasus series with the aim to place the first man on the moon.

CANISSIAN PARLIAMENT

King Arik Coyotus-II was in a meeting with the various Ministers to assess national priorities and duties. It was not a give-and-take for the benefit of cameras or voters or political action groups, but a simple meeting to look at what wa son the plate.

King Arik was looking at the summary before him. "Okay, after we had our public row over the Naval Expansion bill, we've started building the Naval support ships. We've got the Supply class replenishment ships and Hope class RO/ROs being built, they're about, what, 40% or so along? Something like that."

"Sounds about right," Interior Minister Viktor Krahn (Libertarian Party, Canceron) said. "The spending on those ships has done a world of good up at Pearl Point."

"Well, we have some more projects in the pipe," King Arik said, "I liked Prime MInister Shroom's idea for a bridge; I think it's time we did that. The Chunnel works well enough but trade is increasing, and we are a natural conduit for international trade between them and PeZookia." He was careful to avoid the use of the term "CATO", since it would remind everyone of the --supposed-- 800-pound gorilla. On the other hand, reminding them of th emoney to be made acting as a trade conduit, and the filling of their own wallets that would result, eased their concerns.

"I also want to look into some more ship building projects," Arik said, "We're going to build some ships for the Katangwan Merchant Marine that's getting started. Right now there are some Katangwan sailors getting hands-on experience in a foreign exchange program with some PeZookian civilian freighters. There are some other initiatives involving Katangwaland I want to look into."

"The Foreign Legion," Defense Minister Ral Tenn (National Party, Saggitaron) said.
"Exactly," King Arik agreed, "We need to get rolling on that. I want a Foreign Legion base in Katangwaland so we can head towards eliminating our Regular Army posts there entirely. My plans include one Motor-Rifle and one Airborne division per base. One in Katangwaland, and one in a location to be determined."

"Frequesne," Trade Minister Rayzha Rumaclin (Labor Party, Caprica) said. "That's the stated goal, now, anyway."

"We've let our interests there lag too much," Arik said, "I was open to the Vinlands all along because we have historical ties there and Brandon was stable and friendly to us; now we may have an opportunity to be heroes and move in to restore him but not without international support and certainly not without the support of the Vinish people. So Vinyards is no longer an easy choice. So we'll ask Tian Xiao for a place in Tian Jia."

"Awkward, seeing as how they're pro-Jeffrey," Minister Tenn said.
"Setting up a Legion base in Tian Jia won't affect the Vinish situation," King Arik said with a wave, "Even if the situation is still up in the air by the time it's built and staffed, which is hard to imagine, we won't use it to launch attacks into Vinlands. Besides, we still have the San Dorado/Coilerburg union to approach, as well."

"What else do we have going on?" asked Finance Minister Erma Felna (National Party, Tauron). She was going through the numbers, as expected.
"The Eagle redesign is about done," said Science & Industry Minister Mark Reebo (Libertarian Party, Gemenon). "We're still trying to figure out what went wrong with Phideaux's flight, though."
"No word on anything mechanical?" King Arik asked.
"Near as we can figure, it may have been a weight problem," Minister Reebo said, "We tested it for 400 pounds, but Phideaux was by himself and even with his suit he's maybe 200. The thruster pack was still rated for the full 400 pounds, but I don't see how it could have affected the flight so much..."

"Well, we're still searching," Arik said, "...but Veleria... Gods, what a continent."

"What about this mega-Zeppelin you talked about with the Prime Minister?" Minister Felna asked.
"I think we should look into it," Arik said, "We can subsidize CanissiAir the seed money needed to get the project started; work with Shroom to share the costs. Make it a prestige project."
"I'll do a work-up of the numbers," Felna said.

"Okay, this gets me down to another couple of things," Arik said. "I want that floating X-Band radar vessel built. That's why we walked away from those pissant islands. That, and they were corrupt as hell, as well as the potential for trouble with the tense Wikonian/IRT situation there. I still think we need X-Band ground stations and that's something I want to tag along on some of our Foreign Legion bases.

"But what we really need is a workup of Navy assets. This situation in the Vinlands shows me that we do not have the Carrier assets needed to carry out a serious strike mission, and maintain CAP, if the need arose. Right now our doctrine is to use our Carriers for fleet air security while covering Marine landings; but long-range Air Force bombers and strike fighters are needed to carry out air support an dair superiority over the actual enemy territory. This means a lot of fuel, little local support, and tired pilots and worn out aircraft. We need bigger Carriers." H elooked ta th eMinisters, as if daring them to challenge the assessment.

The Libertarian Party members, eager for the business a major Naval expansion would provide, agreed, as did the Nationalists and Royalists. Labor, as Arik expected, gave luke-warm support. Only the Greens were adamantly opposed.

"Myra," King Arik said, "If we take this to a public vote you'll be overwhelmed. It'll be embarrassing for you, unless you want to be seen making a symbolic public stance for your Party. Environment Minister Myra Foxglove (Greens Party, Picon), frowned, seeing she was outvoted.

"Let's tell the media," she said, "That I held it up until you promised to replace all chemical THEL lasers with solid-state 'Green Laser' tech within the next two years," she said, "And that you will accelerate SHEL technology use for Navy ships as well."

King Arik looked at her, and the Science, Defense, and Finance Ministers. All gave the same 'why not?' shrug.

"Okay, we'll do it," Arik said. He tried to make it look like he;d just agreed to something difficult, but this was very close to what he'd wanted earlier, when he tried to pass the Naval Expansion bill and got only support ships instead of a new Kuznetsov. Now he had something much better-- replacing all the Kuznetsovs with bigger Carriers and expanding the SHEL laser program.

"I think we can live with this," he said seriously, while inside he was shouting for joy.

Tian Xia International Airport

Foreign Minister Ren Lars arrived in a quiet, low-key visit to the MESS ally. On his agenda were three subjects:

1- Would Tian Xia accept a Canissian base at Tian Jiao?
2- What was going to be the official, public stance of Tian Xia on the Vinlands situation?
3- Would Tian Xia be interested in participating in the beginnings of a Big Project at Katangwaland?

Something about Libertarianism always bothered me. Then one day, I realized what it was:
Libertarian philosophy can be boiled down to the phrase, "Work Will Make You Free."

In Libertarianism, there is no Government, so the Bosses are free to exploit the Workers.
In Communism, there is no Government, so the Workers are free to exploit the Bosses.
So in Libertarianism, man exploits man, but in Communism, its the other way around!

One by one the CATO leaders and their guests arrived and were welcomed into the Palace of the Soviets. Escorted by Black Hand troops and journalists, who were wondering what exactly was going on. After the official welcome greetings and shaking of hands for the cameras, the group of Gentlemen retired to the Presidents office inside the Palace of the Soviets. Something big was about to happen, and everyone wanted to know what that would be. The journalists would have to wait along with the rest of the world for this meeting to be over. The result of the meeting would change many things in the world.

President’s office, Palace of Soviets, Stasograd, UCSR

President Hank sat himself down in one of the office’s comfortable leather chairs. His plane had arrived with an absolute minimum of fuss at a military airport just outside Stasograd only two hours earlier. The president felt close to bursting with a nervous energy, so much so that it required a conscious effort to appear calm and collected.

“Thank you, and thank you for having me... Comrade”, Sidney faintly smiled after Shady’s introduction. He was imminently aware of all the communist paraphernalia that decorated the office of the President of the UCSR. That’s several shades of ironic, he considered. “I’m glad to be here.” And I’d kill for some alcohol, he added in thought.

Imperial Chronicles

Emperor Heraclius nearly laughed out loud. But the politicking was getting tad bit hilarious and ironical. Regardless though, there was indeed business to be done. King Paul and Duke Lelouch were late but no matter; King Paul had given his seal of approval on this.

"President Hank. I would dare say things have changed considerably over the last ... few years. From that little conversation between you and Decius and now we all sit hear on Stasograd on a momentous occasion. Here, we, of CATO, have agreed to grant you full membership in CATO, to join this small but slowly growing brotherhood of nations who strive for technological and scientific progress, greater trade and industry, and finally defence against those who seek to destroy us."

Heraclius looked around, and finally laughed and said, "What say you Sidney? Want to join the club?"

ALL OF VELARIA!

Somewhere in Velaria

Image

The jungle burned. Trees were set ablaze and the wind did nothing but feed the flames, swaying burning branches and scattering lit-up leaves into the air like so many embers. The blazing inferno encroached further, spreading, growing, washing over the tropical rainforest and consuming everything in its path. The sky was darkened by the smoke.

Image

Gobinda emerged from the sanctum of his cult's lair and beheld the firestorm before him. Heat washed over his blood-caked face and he shielded his face from the blaze. His eyebrows and nosehairs were singed by the heat. He recoiled in panic.

Smoke and soot chocked him and his cultist followers as they emerged from their temple of doom - just as bewildered as Gobinda himself at this sudden transpiration, how the very darkest heart of their jungle was turned into a flaming hell.

Gobinda turned to seek out the Odinists amongst them, to accuse the one-eyed Deacon Saito of treachery - for such were the ways of their heathen god Loki - but before he could, there was a noise that could be heard above the sound of crackling twigs.

Gunfire.

The encroaching flames left behind them a wasteland of barren earth and burnt tree-corpses, and amidst this charred wake were men advancing towards the beleaguered Kali-cultists and Odinists.

They came out of the fire.

All of them.

And the infidels, Kali-cultists and Odinists alike, shrieked in womanly fear as Allah's Mujahadeen descended upon them.

As Mohammad Jihad came to exact vengeance upon them.

"All of Velaria!" he roared in righteous and wrathful indignation.

All of Velaria.

Shady laughed seeing that his joke was well accepted. "Our nations are different, but we work well together. I'm sure we will work well with you as well.", Shady smiled, "We wont allow small ideological differences to stand in our way."

The Presidents personal assistants entered the room, with a tray filled with various drinks.

"Gentlemen, I believe we could all use a drink.", Shady smiled as one of the lovely young ladies poured him a glass of Vodka. His guests were getting their choice drinks as well.

"Paul and the Duke are a bit late, but they'll be here soon.", Shady said with a smile.

"Meanwhile, let us have a toast. Welcome to the family Sidney.", the President smiled and raised his glass.

"To the future!", he said and downed his Vodka.

A broad grin split the face of the NFT president. Sidney leaned slightly forward. “Why yes, your worshipfulness. Yes I do.”

Sidney’s smile came to include something faintly predatory when he was handed a glass of vodka. “Za druzhbu myezhdu narodami!” he returned the toast, with what he fleetingly realized had to be a distinctly awful accent. So this is how the future is made he mused to himself as he emptied his glass in one swig. In the offices of former enemies, and laced with alcohol. He chuckled. The future was gonna be fantastic.

STASOGRAD STEAKHOUSE

Image

"Here, here!" the Prime Minister cheered. "A toast, I say! San Dorado, in CATO! Huzzah!"

"Huzzah!" the assembled fellows chorused.

"It was Shady's idea, your feats inspired him," Shroom went on. "And when he told me his plan to get you in, well, superbestfriendsforever and all that, I couldn't not-support it, could I? And I guess Heraclius must've had fun over at the Floating Pagoda, posing with the wax statues of the Huang Di!"

"It is a very rare moment to be in the presence of a fellow Emperor," Heraclius joked. "Lest I visit the Forbidden City itself."

"Ever figured out what you were going to do with them?" Shady asked. "Comrade Stanislav has actually expressed his desire to acquire a life-sized wax statue of the Huang Di, intending to bring it with him to his secret meetings with the KGB and the Politiburo."

"Something can be arranged, perhaps." Sidney suggested with a broad grin. The mental image of Comrade Stanislav shoulder to shoulder with the gold-armored wax statue of the Huang Di was certainly an amusing one. "Perhaps a token to our appreciation of the hospitality of the UCSR."

"And the rest of CATO too!" Shroom added. "I mean, I sure want one of those statues too! The one where he looks like he's inhaled mercury/opium fumes!"

"Excellente!" Sidney laughed. "Well, I guess you guys can have all the Huang Dis you want, as long as I keep his Grand Vizier - that Malevolent Mandarin himself! Hah!"

"Yay! Huang Dis for everyone!" Shroom cheered. "Well, except for Lelouch, since he's probably going to be late. Again."

"Maybe he can get a wax statue of the Huang Di's Court Physician," Sidney said. "Who also knows kung fu!"

Orena, PeZookia

Duke Lelouch and King Paul had just finished their final deliberations when they found out that they both were being recalled to Stasograd for a CATO meeting. Both leaders had agreed to start exchanging information regarding human trafficking in Langley and PeZookia, with Lelouch volunteering the aid of the Langley National Police's own detectives to help matters in PeZookia and the Border States proper; they also agreed to start a special forces cross-training program by exchanging operators. While Paul had already made up his mind on the matter of the Vineyards coup, Lelouch was still somewhat reluctant to come to a conclusion himself; he trusted Milly back at home to make her own decisions for once.

Lelouch was aware of Paul's custom of chartering LOT PeZookian Airlines flights to wherever he wanted to go, and with that, he decided to do a favor for his fellow leader. "Your Highness, if I may suggest something?" he asked. "Instead of chartering a LOT flight to Stasograd for the CATO meeting, why don't you accompany me and my consorts aboard our own transport?"

The Speech

The following speech by NFT President Sidney Hank is broadcasted live on Worldwide One throughout the NFT and, by extension, the world.

Good evening ladies and gentlemen.

This is the second time I have spoken to you directly. The last time was at my inauguration, when I spoke of the many changes and challenges ahead of us all, and the bright future that I believe lies ahead of our recently unified nations. It is of these two things that I want to speak to you again today.

In all the decisions I have made during my tenure in office, I have always tried to do what was best for my fellow shareholders: today as president of the Trust, and earlier as president of San Dorado. It was in that latter position that I found myself a principled supporter of the formation of the Frequesuan Treaty Organization, an alliance among whose many noble goals it was to empower our continent, and to defend it from ignoble outside influence.

Throughout the long and difficult period that is the recent history of our continent I have felt it was my duty to persevere, to make every possible effort to achieve these goals, and to balance them with the interests of our shareholders—your interests. In the past few months, however, it has become evident to me that we no longer have a good enough reason to justify continuing that effort.

As I recall the high hopes I had when the FTO began its great work, I feel a great sadness now that I realize that it is failing in those tasks. Because it is failing. In the south of our continent the Empire of Tian Xia is expanding its sphere of influence, and the FTO is unable to muster a response. Our efforts to stabilize the CFR have stalled. And even as our Trust prospers some of our closest allies now experience great internal unrest, about which again we can do little.

These are matters of deep concern to me. As long as there was a base of confidence in the Frequesuan Treaty Organization, I felt strongly that it was necessary to see the troubles through, that to do otherwise would be unfaithful to the spirit of our alliance. But as our two nations entered a new era as a political and economic union I also had to ask myself, is the membership of this alliance still in our best interest?

Unfortunately, the answer is no. I cannot in good conscience ask of you, the shareholders of the North Frequesuan Trust, to continue to support an organization which involves the overriding issues of war and peace unless this support yields fruit -- something it unfortunately has done far too little.

Ladies and gentlemen, it is therefore with a heavy heart that I make known to you the secession of the North Frequesuan Trust from the Frequesuan Treaty Organization, effective at noon tomorrow. At that same moment our union will join the Continental Alliance Treaty Organization. As I speak to you now Chairman Lorenz of Coilerburg and President Sinclair of San Dorado are signing the necessary treaty documents.

I am proud we have been part of the FTO. I am proud of all the things we have achieved together: the cooperation of industries, the economic progress, the peace we have brought in the central Frequesue. But it is time to move on. It is time to cut loose some of the ties that bind us to this struggling continent and seize that bright future I promised you at my inauguration.

As a member of CATO, our union and its shareholders will enjoy all the benefits that come with being part of a growing brotherhood of nations who strive for technological progress and free trade. It gives us an opportunity to make friends with former opponents, breaks open markets that were formerly closed to us, and gains us staunch allies with world-spanning capabilities. It is the firm belief of not just me, but also of the San Dorado Board of Directors, the Corporate Congress of Coilerburg and the Syndicate of the North Frequesuan Trust that the decision to join the ranks of this august alliance will guarantee a future of peace and profit in the NFT and in the world.

To our friends on Frequesue I want to say that I hope our decision will generate no bitterness or resentment. We wish to continue working with you to guarantee peace on our continent. We remain committed to Frequesuan stability and prosperity, and we will honor the free trade agreement that has done so much for our continent. In no way or shape will our new affiliation attempt to impede or hinder your success. We are -- and I want to make this particularly clear -- your friends, and will continue to be so in the future, fully and faithfully.

My fellow shareholders, in recent years our union of nations has come far and achieved much. But tonight I pledge to you that we are setting the first step on a road to a future brighter and more promising than any of us could have conceived of. The future is ours, and together we shall make history.

Good night, and good luck.
