Here you go Broomstick, hope these help.

http://www.guildwars.com/products/default.php - all of the products. Though it isn't my favorite, I'd recommend starting with Nightfall, for many reasons given the current state of the game's community.
http://www.guildwars.com/freetrial/ - free trial.
http://www.guildwarsguru.com/forum/ - this is the forum that I use. Granted it does have its share of retards, but they're pretty ignorable. The site is also filled with a lot of Guild Wars information, many of which does come from the perspective of gamers.

I've been trying to get back into the game myself, but I find myself getting bored pretty quickly (again, game community), so I'm hoping we can get some kind of teamed formed, maybe that would get me back into it.

I can probably get you guys into the Raven Alliance - they're really active. Does not suit my particular anti-social tendencies very well, but they've learned to deal with my eccentricities and jokingly call me "house" (Like "House, get to FoW and help us take out <monster X>" me: Fine, I'll be there, but I won't like it.)

While I tend to do a lot of solo play in WoW, and I expect I'd do the same in GW, having a good guild to go to when you need/want company is a huge plus. I was so lucky in WoW to just happen into a really good guild. If you folks have a crowd I can join in GW (if I decide to go with it) that would be fantastic. Plus, you get to play with fabulous me!

You're more than welcome to join broomy - The alliance I'm in is so mazingly active and friendly that it boggles the mind, really. I have no idea why I got in. when they asked me, I said "Sure I'll join if you want a player who A) has no idea what he's doing B) is terrible at PvP, and C) requires a healthy dose of idiocy each day just to remain functional.

Next thing I know - Blammo, I'm in Raven Revival.

Can't wait until the next fight club.

Deleted a duplicate post of yours, Chardok.

Broomy, Guild Wars is like a skills-based WoW. There's no emphasis on levels or powerful items; much of it is designed as a 'level playing field' wherein anyone can be competitive in a short time period, after which it's up to the player to design a skill set which makes them effective in different missions.

Sounds like my kind of place. How do I join up?

Also - does GW use different servers, or is everyone all mooshed together like in EVE? 'Cause if it's different servers I'll need to know which one Raven Alliance is on.

Sounds interesting. I'm looking into a free trial, at least. Looks like I can get the game itself for about $20. Won't install until next week at the earliest 'cause I got yet another trip to Detroit this weekend.

Nah - one server, but there's districts within the server. that's is, like, American english district (invariably clogged with Framerate killing idiots.) and international which is pretty much empty - of note is that if you do not want to, you can play totally by yourself, or group with people. the only time you are actually with people outside a group is in a town area, or in a PvP instance. I have grouped with ZERO people since I started, opting instead for using AI heroes and henchmen - it's been fun.

I Pugged through most of the first GW, but once I had a few friends join, have never gone with a full PuG again.

However, I can't stand some of the retarded things the AI henchmen and heroes do.

The heroes aren't so bad once you're used to their eccentricities. I will also say that 3 M/Any smiter heroes = everything is dead - even in 8-man mish's.

The one thing you can't expect - and I found this a personal hurdle to cross having played games such as Diablo which are the complete opposite - is to be God Almighty once you get armoured up and have a decent set of skills. The game really is designed around a level playing field and while you can play by yourself if you take a computer-controlled team of henchmen and heroes with you, you cannot reliably wander around solo slaughtering the entire enemy army single-handedly, and several of the optional super-dungeons in later expansions are unplayable to a casual gamer without a knowledgeable player team. You can tell that the designers didn't have a multiplayer *role-playing and player interaction* environment in mind, ala WoW - they had a multiplayer *gaming* environment in mind.

Also, in the later expansions, you will find it a potentially boring grind-fest that makes you WANT to play with other palyers. That is, you need to kill about eleventy qudzillion enemies of <Faction X> so that their armourers/weapon makers will even talk to you. (I'm finding this to be true with the Ebon Vanguard) I mean, christ, how many Kilrathi Charr do I have to kill to get you assholes to prove I'm on your side?! FFS I've killed celestial demigods, don't you think that me and my three monk buddies here could have killed you without even breaking a sweat? We're here to *Help* Just friggin.....gimme the Ebon Battle Standard, I'll go out and bring you the head of the Charr KING or whatever, and dont you worry your pretty little heads over the silly little sub-missions you need done.

Damn Ebon Vanguard.

If I can't get them to give me my fracking skills tonight, I may just go back to Fort Aspenwood and burninate some Kurzick scumwadsjust for kicks.

(PS - that one Assassin dude in EotN has an awesome line "Do you know why assassins carry two daggers?"

"No."

"Because we only have two hands.")

May not be a problem - I'm looking at GW as a change of pace from WoW, which I do get my fill of from time to time. It would probably be long time before I face end-game problems.

Now, what's this I hear about GW II?

So, for $20 I get at least a year of MMORPG? That's not bad at all.

If you get entertainment out of it, certainly. For a WoW fan, it probably better suits the budget, but it's a slightly different experience even if they seem similar by a broad stroke.

Ahhh yeah - I finally completed "The Smell of Titan in The Morning" - Got Ebon Battle Standard of Honor and am one step closer to my perma build (Landed Pywatts Talons a couple days ago). I'm hoping that tonight I can blast through the Northern allies line and snag "By Ural's Hammer!" to complete the build and then I'll go hit the raptorshard for bongo asuran faction. Or....maybe I'll just redo all the dungeons. and get a complete hero's handbook and get beaucoup points that way.

...OR maybe I should actually FINISH a campaign so I can unlock HM somewhere LOL. I'm excited for the time where I get bored with PvE and I can actually contribute faction to the alliance. I feel like such a leech right now :/

Oh well.

Well, here I go - I'm downloading a trial copy of GW. Character name Lilly Enthal, cute little dark skinned, white haired ranger.

I reinstalled the GW and Factions. I have a level 18 Assassin\Ranger named "Prolapsed Anus", a level 18 Warrior\Ranger named "Edwyrd Nigma" and a level 3 Ranger\Warrior named "Captain Bootocks". Currently using Captain Bootocks.

Got sucked in for 2 hours. I'm getting things worked out although I'm still a little puzzled by a few of the icons and stuff but I've got a wiki to consult. Different pace than WoW, slower in some ways. Also have to get used to playing a human instead of a giant cowgirl or zombie or troll but I'll cope :)

Question:

When I mouse over a skill on my skill bar there are several icons. I figured out that the blue energy thing is the energy expended. The little arrow in a circle is how long it takes to recharge (right?). But what's the one with the little silver circle icon?

Sounds like exhaustion. Be careful with skills that have that icon.

I did a little more digging - this what I was looking at was activation time, but I'll take another look next time I go on.

Quick rundown of the icons in the skill information:

Image - The spell causes exhaustion to the caster. Unless you have elementalist as your primary class you will probably want to avoid these.
Image - Energy cost for the skill.
Image - Activation time.
Image - Recharge time.
Image - When casting this you lose a percentage of your maximum HP. Necromancer skills only.
Image - The skill costs adrenaline to activate.
