Sound editing?

Post by Joviwan »

Anyone here familiar with sound editing or VO, personally or professionally? I have a little project I'm working on for a DnD game I plan on running, but my own experience with recording voice-overs is... amature, at best.

Specifically, I'm looking to make a pre-recorded PA system kind of sound with my dialogue, really tinny audio with clicks and fizzles and crackling, and I've gotten about as far as downloading Audacity.

Why do you need pre-recorded stuff for your campaign? You're just going to end up having improvised lines that you haven't recorded anyway.

In a game I ran just this week my players communicated with someone over the radio. You know what I did to simulate the person on the other end? I covered my mouth with a cupped hand and spoke with a muffled tone.

If you want you can send them to me. I have access to recording studios and engineers who'd be willing to help you out on this.

Otherwise I'll see if I can figure out how to do it in Audacity later today (I haven't used that program in ages) and get back to you.

If your looking for some sound editing software, Soundtrack Pro is the best in my experience (if you've got a mac) but if you've got a PC I've heard sonicfire Pro is the equivalent software. Either one should have just about everything you'll need and its pretty easy to use.

The dungeon they're going to be crawling through is going to be blaring pre-recorded, automated messages at them at key points throughout. Having the messages pre-recorded will add that nice bit of flavor, and since there's absolutely no way their presence will be generated by anything other than specific event triggers, I don't need to wing it.

Wow. That seems a little over the top for my DnD game, but I'm half tempted to take you up on that offer. My other problem at the moment stems from that I don't even particularly have a script yet, so the whole thing might be a while before I'd get to anyone about it. Thank you greatly for the assistance, though.

I'll take a look, thanks.

I'm partial to Sony Soundforge AudioStudio. They have a free trial and it's easy to do static and distortion in.
