Perhaps redesign was a poor choice of words. I actually meant something in the lines of how you'd further improve the design or how would you fix some design flaws.Knife wrote:Crossroads has been asking this very question for a page now.Havok wrote:Wait... question. Why do Battlestars have support groups? I was under the impression that they are for defense of the 12 Colonies.
Carrier groups on Earth have support ships because they run out of shit and operate far from home in international and sometimes hostile waters. Do Battlestars go anywhere besides the vicinity of the 12 Colonies? There are no other inhabited planets or other races to interact with besides the Cylons, which also came from the 12 Colonies. They have FTL which gets them basically, instantly where they want to be, but where do they want to be besides the 12 planets that they occupy that are all friendly?
I could see the roll of some missleships or gunships, but actual resupply ships? That doesn't seem like a necessity.
What are we designing Galactica FOR?

What design flaws? Shit, aside from the one episode where Adama and the Chief are like "OMG she's gonna implode! Get the Cylon goo!!" the ship handled every single thing asked of it. Even AFTER that episode, it took Boomer's point blank FTL jump, crashed nose first in to the Mega-Zoid Baseship, had 6 Raptors FTL out from INSIDE the docking bays, took sustained fire, twice, for at least a minute at point blank range each time and then almost complete buckled and popped every rivet on the ship and was STILL space worthy. Not to mention, how many nuclear hits? Seriously, just HOW MUCH MORE do you want from that fucking ship?!

I'd call sacrficing hangar space, armour and primary battery for oneczillion miss-everything magic ammuition guns that only exist because someone thought one million flak decals would impress people might count as a design 'flaw' but it's arguable the humans built herfir a different war and enemy capabilities (not that Pegasus was the result of intelligence on the cylons, which the humans appeared to have zero).Havok wrote: What design flaws? Re: Redesign the Galactica
I think it comes down to a few things.
1. THere has to be a balance between main armament and defensive armament. I think the balance is decent, but the arrangement is horrible and firing arcs somewhat limited.
2. Increased Hanger space is good. Raptors can carry capital ship killing armament.
3. Larger workshops, again good.
But ultimately, everything has to be a balance and compromise.

Re: Redesign the Galactica
Why do the hangars need to extend anyway? Can't the Vipers be launched without extending the hangars?

They seem to launch vipers through tubes so it doesn't seem they need to launch those through the hangar decks, it seems it's there for making quick landings in combat.

Re: Redesign the Galactica
I can easily see the Colonials being stuck with crippled fire control during the first Cylon War because of the Cylons' magical ZOMG HAXXOR powers. In that case, ships of Galactica's vintage were stuck with throwing up vast clouds of flak knowing almost all of it would miss. Then by the time Pegasus is built, they have modern fire-control and can afford to replace the flak guns with a much smaller number of point defense guns.Stark wrote:I'd call sacrficing hangar space, armour and primary battery for oneczillion miss-everything magic ammuition guns that only exist because someone thought one million flak decals would impress people might count as a design 'flaw' but it's arguable the humans built herfir a different war and enemy capabilities (not that Pegasus was the result of intelligence on the cylons, which the humans appeared to have zero).Havok wrote: What design flaws? The thing about this thread is that I don't think there's even a consensus on when Galactica is being redesigned. Are we trying to build a better ship for the First Cylon War? Upgrading her later, when better technology is available? Custom-modding her into an escort for the RTFF? You're going to get very different ships depending on the answer to that question.

Re: Redesign the Galactica
It's not only a matter of "when", but also the feasibility restraints. You can do uberwank upgrades like slapping a set of Pegasus flight pods on the Bucket, or something more feasible like putting more plating over the exposed ribs. When it comes down to it, updated Galactica= Valkyrie/Pegasus hybrid of some sort.RedImperator wrote:The thing about this thread is that I don't think there's even a consensus on when Galactica is being redesigned.

When the Bucket dropped on New Caprica it's pods were retracted and it's Vipers launched just fine.Shroom Man 777 wrote:Why do the hangars need to extend anyway? Can't the Vipers be launched without extending the hangars?
If I had something interesting, profound or incredibly stupid to say, it would go here.
