Red Dwarf: Back To Earth Talkback. (Spoilers)
The first of three parts is due to start in five minutes on 'Dave' So I thought I'd create a thread for discussion.
Get to it, smegheads!

Fuck Dave. I wanna see too! God damnit.
I've rewatched Back To Reality today. If they can get even close to that standard this should be fun.

Well, that was a resounding, 'meh.' Not exactly bad and they seem to have put a lot of effort into showing the scale of a the Red dwarf, hell now i might actually believe it's a five mile mining ship. But there's been no effort at all to remotely tie it in to the end of Season 8 at all. In fact, it doesn't seem to tie with anything past season 5 at all.
Oh well, maybe it'll pick up with the next couple of episodes. I'm back to watch some of the old episodes they're playing.

Fuck Dave here too. Yeah I have it but the only TV with it is occupied by evil womenfolk.
If it was on the BBC I could just run upstairs but noooooo...
In any case, ignoring season 8 can only be good. Not sure why they'd bypass 6 though.

If I had something interesting, profound or incredibly stupid to say, it would go here.
Re: Red Dwarf: Back To Earth Talkback. (Spoilers)
Nothing great, IMO. With luck it'll pick up in the next part. I liked some of the shots of the Red Dwarf, though. Really showed its size.

Huh, nothing mind blowing and only mildly funny. Pretty comparable to Season Seven with the semi-serious tone, annoying Mary Sue, and lack of laughter track. The complete lack of continuity with the last two/three seasons could explained away as this being the alternative reality version of the Red Dwarf.

To be fair, among casual viewers, who remembers the end of season 8? That said, this is a holo-rimmer, so it seems Rimmer2's death stands...Crazedwraith wrote:Well, that was a resounding, 'meh.' Mary sue? Fuckin' hell no, that's not what she is at all.Big Orange wrote:Huh, nothing mind blowing and only mildly funny. Does she need 'Villain' plastered over her face? She actually wants to kill - really kill, not just turn him off because he's annoying or something funny - Rimmer for no apparent reason.
Really, though, these guys are experienced adventurers now - they shouldn't take her word for anything. Straight into the stasis chamber with her.

Rimmer 2 is only introduced in series 8, so if it's holo Rimmer it'd be the original.NecronLord wrote:To be fair, among casual viewers, who remembers the end of season 8? That said, this is a holo-rimmer, so it seems Rimmer2's death stands...

Is there some kind of series 8 retcon?
I am proclaiming that Rimmer has died, Rimmer has risen as a hologram, Rimmer has ascended bodily into the realm of Ace. The Second Coming of Rimmer did die again, and rose once more as a hologram.
What about that dothen't thou understand?

I'm not getting that at all. It had pictures of Kochanski (of season 7/8) and a couple of other guys from S8 on the grave.Darth Onasi wrote:I was going by what's been said that it doesn't seem to follow events after season 5.

Re: Red Dwarf: Back To Earth Talkback. (Spoilers)
It really doesn't work with Season 8. At the end of Season 8 they all escaped to an AU REd Dwarf, where the Cat was a genius and Rimmer was captain an so on. It had a full crew as well. So unless there was a severe case of history repeating its self its not the same as the 'Back To Earth' Red Dwarf.

Well the way she sprouted out technobabbel and can do so much with a squid tendril shrieks "Mart Sue" and she's so punchably smug. I do find the continuity reset glaring (Season VIII is, IMHO, rather underrated). I liked the exterior CGI/model shots of the Big Red One though, and is that the Tyrell Corp. pyramid seen in London's future skyline?NecronLord wrote:

Wait, are you really trying to fit a continuity to Red Dwarf?Crazedwraith wrote:It really doesn't work with Season 8. Re: Red Dwarf: Back To Earth Talkback. (Spoilers)
Apparently, some information released in SFX magazine in the UK places this new series in the timeline 9 years after the events of "Only the Good...".NecronLord wrote:To be fair, among casual viewers, who remembers the end of season 8? So it's like the jump between S2 and S3 - "hey, all this stuff has changed, but just accept it and roll with it". And it does pave the way for tie-in books
Re: Red Dwarf: Back To Earth Talkback. (Spoilers)
It looks good, it has a few decent jokes, but it's trying to be waaay too serious. Sophie Winckleman's always good though.
I still don't get where the hell she comes from, or why Lister just accepts what she plans to do with Rimmer. It's pretty sloppy.

Re: Red Dwarf: Back To Earth Talkback. (Spoilers)
She's meant to be the ship's science officer. You may have noticed this is a setting where the level of scientific understanding is so developed that a sanitation droid can pick up top end experimental hardware (teleport paddle, time drive, time wand) understand it and get it going in seconds. She's meant to be more scientifically capable than Bogbot 5000 - there's no way she actually could be a convincing science officer without being super-clever.Big Orange wrote:Well the way she sprouted out technobabbel and can do so much with a squid tendril shrieks "Mart Sue"
And the definition of 'Mary Sue' includes - 'everyone loves her' - Ms. Bartakovski has already started a fued with one member of the crew - simply because she's a bitch.
Oh, do I need to restate that she's probably a villain?

You know, because of his role as the 'technobabble guy', I often forget that Kryten is actually supposed to be a cleaning mechanoid.

Well, more like a general purpose mechanoid. He seemed to be built for anything from scientific analysis to crotch vacuuming.Ford Prefect wrote:You know, because of his role as the 'technobabble guy', I often forget that Kryten is actually supposed to be a cleaning mechanoid.
And then his successor model, Hudsen, was all that plus a cyber ninja.

I wouldn't say Hudsen 10 is at all demonstrative of Kryten's intelligence, though. He was made to be 'ten times smarter.'

The best it was obviously the hologram killing section but the rest was equal parts meh and huh?
