Good Friday Gore Fetish

Post by LMSx »

This is a NSFW link to a local church's video, er, promoting their Good Friday service.

It wouldn't take much work to become the horror movie trailer

Good Friday
Coming Soon

I know little besides The Passion of the Christ and their take on beating the shit out of Jesus, but my first instinct was that it was an appeal to the 20-something Saw audience. How common is this sort of bloody depiction? Obviously PotC set some box office records but I don't know much about whether non Mel Gibson denominations celebrate so graphically. Catholics? Protestants?

Oh, what I've missed out on without a religious childhood. :D

What the fuck was that? The Gospel according to M. Nyght Shamalan?

I couldn't help but giggle when the centurion got his ear cut off and started spilling buckets of blood, as if there's major arteries running along there.

You know there's a cult in South America that actually crucify themselves out of some bizarre reverence for this?

I'm a guy who still has to hide his atheism from his devout Catholic family and still has to go through all the religious motions because the family matriarch is the type who gets pissed even if you think about skipping Sunday Mass just once. Frankly, getting a decent place for a home here is hard enough without me risking getting disowned and out of the house being willed to me and my brothers, so I'm probably not upsetting that status quo any time soon.

Anyway, I can tell you that a lot of religious types do take this absolutely seriously and that the really bloody depiction is the point. This is especially true for Catholics around this time of the year since this is when they celebrate "the Passion and Death of Jesus FOR YOUR SAKE" and the priests usually like to hammer home the point that it was YOUR SIN AND DECADENCE that caused the dear Lord Jesus to be BLOODILY TORTURED AND CRUCIFIED just to take the weight of sin away from YOUR wretched souls. And, yes, the all caps to represent just exactly what they really emphasize during their sermons around this time of the year.

EDIT: for grammar and clarification

I'm delighted to tell you I got that link from the Facebook status of a wonderfully nice, polite, good friend who is a serious member of that church. Just thought she'd share it with everyone. :?

My church does crucifiction dramas every easter, but they're nowhere NEAR that. By my count, I've witnessed 18 crucifictions because I'm in the orchestra pit.

I fear I'm becoming jaded, and if I ever go to a real crucifiction I won't have any fun.

The Philippines even. I knew it was some tropical country but I couldn't remember which one. For some reason I kept wanting to think somewhere in South America.

I think they might have taken the main video down since Good Friday's over, but another version is under the embed tag on that page.

It's kind of hard to sell the line "on Good Friday we celebrate the brutal murder of a good man" after that trailer. I think I know which part they're celebrating...

Jesus Christ (no pun intended)!

I've been to Good Friday services in fairly traditional Catholic churches, but they're nothing like that. That's well over the top.

I remember reading several articles over the past year or so that indicated a correlation between economic hardships and religious fervor (ranging from just going to church more often all the way to full-blown Rapture freaks).

I bring this up because the local paper here posted a couple stories in the week leading up to Good Friday about passion plays that took place up here in the capital of New England Cafeteria Catholicism, one of them being performed by kids ages 6-16 (obviously none of them were as extreme as the Philippines groups that actually nail people to crosses).

If I recall correctly, both took place in hispanic parishes, which have always tended towards being more religious and more invested in the pomp and circumstance than the rest of the region. But I'm pretty sure even they weren't performing passion plays before the economy shat the bed.
