To someone who uses the phrase "Why you gotta"? It's an obligation.
Really that was half the movie? Most of seemed like it was getting crowded out by Captain Lennox and his awesome squad or John Voight and the hackers. As far as critics go, most of the reviews I had read supported the actions scenes over everything else. Personally I thought the whole movie was pretty weak.
Yeah, because you think it should have been all about the robots. Your preferred version would have done really well among fanboys with no girlfriends.

Oh right, this from the guy who said that they should have excised the whole teen romance subplot from the story and that it made no contribution to the film's profits.

I figured most summer action blockbusters make their money on the action.

Wow, you really don't get this, do you? Do you know why Death Race only made $36 million while films like Transformers and Spiderman shoot up to the hundreds of millions?

Here's a hint: they make more money when you can take your girlfriend to see it.

Because they're rated PG-13 and are based on long standing cultural icons?

Fine, you go on telling yourself that Transformers made $300 million because it's a "cultural icon", and not because it had enough girl appeal to double its potential audience. Whatever makes you happy.

(sigh) and you don't realize that family films need to appeal to the whole family, not just the boy who likes to see big explosions? Do you not understand that families typically include females?

Why do I even have to explain this? Are you from another planet?

In the comics he was created using the Matrix. In the cartoon he was an ancient Decepticon who crashed on Earth and was frozen in a glacier since before the Autobot/Decepticon war started, and decided to join the Autobots after waking up to see that the Decepticons had become dicks since the last time he saw them.

Maybe its because I did not grow up watching the cartoons, but I found that the relationship stuff was the only reason why I cared about the action. Sure its fun to see robots bash each other, but it gets a little old if you don't really care about who's fighting, and I can't really relate to a giant transforming robot.

I personally wasn't too nuts about the movie, but I can easily see why it did well. Yeah, I'd have liked something closer to the comic or cartoon, but I'd also like a random sexy red-head to ring my doorbell and say "I've been a bad girl...punish me" and then let me screw her brains out for the next week. It's not going to happen.

Ignoring most stuff about Transformers, it was a good movie. And as noted, most people won't give a shit about established continuity they know nothing of.

It had some nice nods, that's about all I expected in terms of fan-service. It was funny when it was supposed to be, I liked that for once the US military didn't look like ass-hats when dealing with the Transformers and there were some really cool robot fights. As a movie in it's own right my biggest complain was with the Men in Black character.

It's not my favorite movie, but I can see why it was a box-office hit, and I wasn't ticked to have spent money to go and see it in the theater.

Bay gives his opinions of the characters in this review.
“The twins are quite fun,” Bay said of the comedy-relief duo, remembering his inspiration for including them. “I just kept thinking, ‘What if we have two dumb Transformers that are young and dumb?’ … They are just irreverent, dumb Transformers.”

I thought Transformers was verging on the ideal of Hollywood-model filming. I enjoyed it thoroughly.

That said, the rampant pro-Americanism in it was a bit annoying (if ignorable), and looking at the OP again:
AUTOBOTS

OPTIMUS PRIME: The Autobots' leader - alternate form: Peterbilt truck (see photo).
IRONHIDE: Weapons specialist - GMC Topkick.
RATCHET: Medic - Hummer H2.
BUMBLEBEE: Friend and mode of transportation for Sam Witwicky (Shia LaBeouf) - 2010 Chevorlet Camaro.
ARCEE: A female Autobot - motorcycle.
SIDESWIPE: A Lamborghini in the toy line, here he transforms into a silver Corvette Stingray concept car.
JETFIRE: An older Decepticon who switches sides - SR71 Blackbird jet.
JOLT: The original toy was a Decepticon, but in the movie he's a good guy - Chevrolet Volt plug-in hybrid.
SKID & MUDFLAP: a.k.a. "The Twins" - Chevrolet Beat and Trax concept cars.

DECEPTICONS

STARSCREAM: Formerly Megatron's second in command, he escaped at the end of the first movie (see photo); F-22 Raptor jet.
SCORPONOK: The mechanical scorpion that attacked the American troops in the desert.
THE FALLEN: One of the original Transformers, he's called "the most elemental bad guy" by the screenwriters.
SIDEWAYS: The Audi R8 seen crashing through a building in the trailer.
SOUNDWAVE: A cassette player in the original toys; his alternate mode will be a communications satellite.
RAVAGE: A four-legged, cat-like robot (see photo).
THE DOCTOR: A spider-like crawling robot.
WHEELIE: A small, radio-controlled truck.
DEMOLISHER: One of the Constructicons that transform into construction vehicles.
DEVASTATOR: A giant robot formed by the Constructicons joining together; individually, they are: Scavenger, Scrapper, Hightower, Longhaul, Rampage, Overload and Mixmaster.
All the autobots are American cars, even the one that used to be a Lamborghini. I hope there's no sappy "dedicated to the workers in America's automobile companies" or something at the end.

Yeah, I know, although I'm not entirely certain he's telling the truth. Regardless, there are quotes all round the place that really show Bay's directing style; he makes movies that he likes personally, and whether audiences like it appears to be a secondary concern. Paramount has effectively given 200 million dollars to a man who is going to use it to create his personal daydream.

And in the other comic (or is that the other other comic?), he's an Autobot scientist who got stuck with monitoring duty over what's left of Cybertron. Sweet armor, though.

Nothing so sinister. They can only use the cars whose companies give them permission/shell out the product placement fee. In the first movie, only the American companies paid. I guess the same holds here.

In other news, this quote from the interview has me optimistic:
“You know what is better in this movie? The acting of the robots. It’s just evolved from the last one, and in terms of the animation we are able to put these robots’ [emotions] in.”

Soundwave is going to be a communications satellite? That means he probably won't be involved in any ground combat nor will he have much if any dialogue, which is unfortunate, although I hope I'm wrong. It's a bit unfortunate that Megatron is out in this movie, given the list. He had so little screen time in the first movie already that his (I'm expecting) eventual return won't have the same significance had his character been more developed.

I hope the human teenage element of the movie won't be dropped because I found it entertaining and as Darth Wong said, it's one of the reasons the first movie did so well. All of my friends who aren't Transformers enthusiasts who saw the first film found the movie entertaining because of the human element. I was even able to drag several of my female friends to go see it a second time.

As to the dinobots, I'm glad they're out. As ridiculous as robots that can transform into vehicles is, robots that transform into dinosaurs is even more ridiculous.
