6.0 Quake hits near Mexico City

Post by Kodiak »

CNN wrote:MEXICO CITY, Mexico (CNN) -- A strong quake measuring 6.0 in magnitude struck southwestern Mexico near the resort city of Acapulco on Monday, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

USGS measured the quake's epicenter in the state of Guerrero about 43 miles northeast of Acapulco. The preliminary magnitude is 6.0, but that could change.

Authorities in Acapulco evacuated hotels there, although there were no reports of damage, according to CNN affiliate TV Azteca.

The temblor was felt about 145 miles (230 km) to the north in Mexico City.

CNN Producer Lonzo Cook, who is in the Mexican capital, said people there headed out into the streets after a vibration shook the building for about 30 to 40 seconds. There was no visible damage, he said.

"People in neighboring office buildings -- quite a majority of them wearing masks because of the swine flu outbreak -- were piling out into the streets," Cook said. "There were a few humorous people on the stairways saying, 'This is the apocalypse. First the swine flu, and now this.' "

However, most people were in "high spirits," Cook said

Sounds like a bad week in Mexico. I'm guessing locusts will be next, followed immediately by a meteor.

Yeah... It was funny that the Health Secretary was giving a press conference when the quake hit, live on TV. He just went "Oh, it must be the construction site next block". And continued like nothing had happened. I didn't even feel it over here.

Also, WHO moved the alert level for Mexico from 3 to 4. Great.

Will keep an eye out for locusts... and frogs... and water turning to blood...

I thought the big one was supposed to be Jaguars falling from the sky. This really sucks for mexico, at a time when they're already dealing with insane narco-terrorism.

Seriously, could it get worse for Mexico? How frequently does Mexico City experience quakes?

Oh, the floods were on 2007, in Tabasco and Chiapas.

Forest fires? Hmm... it's not the season, yet... but give it time.

The good thing is, with schools closed nationwide, I get to take the week off. That's all that matters... ha ha... HAH HAH HAH...

I guess even a nation can say: "I hate Mondays."

Seriously, Mexico right now gets ones disaster after the other and sometimes you have to wonder if they did something to get the big man up there pissed at them.

Mexico City is on one of the most seismically active spots in North America. Its a city, built on the ruins of a city, built on the ruins of a city, in a swamp next to a volcano.

Really, couldn't have picked a worse spot.

Heh heh... There is no god, amigo!

But seriously, if one were to even entertain such a notion, one would think the Big Enchilada would like to start off with these guys:

2. Vietnam

8. France
9. South Korea
10. Estonia (up to 49% non-believer, atheist, agnostic)
... rather than the very secular but overwhelmingly Catholic Mexico.

But we all know the guy's a wanker.

Well, you know what they say, "Poor Mexico - so far from God, so close to the United States."

In all seriousness, though, this is nothing on the 8.1 quake that hit Mexico City back in 1985.

Yeah. I remember that one. I was in Secondary School. Though I didn't live in Mexico City (which got the worst of it by far), it felt as if we were in war. The power failed for a few hours, and we got the information from a battery-powered radio. The more reports came in, the worse the picture looked. Official numbers (we have to remember that was still the era of an omnipotent PRI-Government) tally the deaths at 5,000, but any other source will say around 10,000.

So, this one was but a minor scare, or, as reported in Spain's El País (though the idioms suggest a Mexican correspondent):
[translated]
One scare covers another

Seconds after the Health Secretary announced that the flu virus has run 149 people down, Mexico City shook. At 11:46 am, local time (same as US Central, GMT -6), a 5.8 earthquake, with its epicentre in the State of Guerrero rocked the buildings. In a second, the streets were filled with thousands of people who, still shaken but in an orderly fashion, had quickly abandoned their homes and their workplaces.

After the first shock, the next thing to appear on all faces was a grin and a repeated question: "Must everything happen here? What's next?". Not half an hour later, life resumed in Mexico, just like that.

This is not a city to live in with the fear on.

So how long before Phelps and his pack of fundamentalist wackos start up with "God hates Mexicans" protests?

Probably as soon as they can find a place to protest without being afraid of catching swine flu.

These ones have got quite popular around here:
What did Mexico City say to the Swine Flu virus?

"Ooh... The flu... I'm so scared...
See how I shake"?
Why shouldn't you hang out with the H1N1 virus?
Because he's a bad influenza.
These jokes could be spreading in a... er... viral fashion, since schools are closed everywhere, and pretty much any other reason to get together with others is also out of the question, especially in Mexico City (besides work, of course).

I have a hard time thinking that the latin version of Irish folk going for a Guiness....er Dos Equse is being wiped out.
They say, "the tree of liberty must be watered with the blood of tyrants and patriots." I suppose it never occurred to them that they are the tyrants, not the patriots. Those weapons are not being used to fight some kind of tyranny; they are bringing them to an event where people are getting together to talk. -Mike Wong

But as far as board culture in general, I do think that young male overaggression is a contributing factor to the general atmosphere of hostility. It's not SOS and the Mess throwing hand grenades all over the forum- Red
