greetings and a question

Post by xianseeker »

Hello to all. Found this sight from a link on the sec web. Even though I'm more of a star trek fan, I really love this sight.

To give a little background. I'll be finishing an undergrad degree in math, with minors in philosophy and phyics next spring and hopefully will be going to a good grad school. Anyway, I have a question about something I read in the flame war page.
Einstein's Theory of General Relativity predicts that unless some form of time travel is employed, superluminal travellers will quickly die of old age).

In my modern physics class we're studying special relativity, so I realize that moving clocks are observed to slow down. Twin paradox and all. Anyway, we've not gotten to GR yet, so could someone comment on this.

Toodles.

I was from the Star Wars vs Star Trek sight, from the hate email page. The author of the page was making a point to some punk high school kid named Richie Rich. Here's the full quote
(Editor's note: This is the part of the argument where he thinks that he can give himself the last word by commanding me not to respond. Since I am not bound by any sort of law to obey his edict, I of course responded anyway. Notice how he assumes that I'm no more educated than he is, without bothering to check. Of course, when I inform him that I do have a university education, he will instantly rescind his previous statement about giving credence to university educations. Also note that he is making bold statements about superluminal travel without bothering to do his research- Einstein's Theory of General Relativity predicts that unless some form of time travel is employed, superluminal travellers will quickly die of old age).

Ah, OK. It was in reply to a guy who talked about superluminal travelling.
It's one of the consequences of the paradox implied in travelling faster than light (If I'm not mistaken), paradoxes that lead to the conclusion that it is physically impossible for an object to pass the speed of light.

Grey Six does not poke, but instead leaves that to Spacebattles types. Instead of poking newbies (which is stupid), Grey Six extends his welcome:

Not quite. Sometimes you can post a pic of someone getting poked. Relax, I don't poke.

So poking is to be dreaded because it sidetracks the thread, or is poking a fearsome concept in and of itself?

Generally speaking, poking occurs in a "Hi! I'm new" thread and thus is a fearsome concept (if goofy). Someone once created this ridiculous "poking tank" that probably would kill if it were real.

It occasionally will sidetrack a thread, though.
