So they got Blackout back too.

It may be Megatron. He was rebuilt with parts from fallen Decepticons, though Blackout was easily largely intact, so it may be him. Megatron seems to have gotten most of his parts from Brawl (the tank).

No you can clearly see Starscream, Megatron and Blackout when they triple team Optimus in the trailer (Revenge of the fallen indeed ). I don't mind of course, Blackout was one of the cooler Transformers and after blowing up that US base the way he did it didn't fit that he went down as easily.
It doesn't matter if there are many more Transformers as long as the writers concentrate on the character development of the few "main" robots. I doubt, for example, that Devastator will be more than a monster.

Ah, fair enough. I'm glad they're showing Optimus as more bad-ass this time around - he took out Bonecrusher with ease, but Megatron was wailing on him a bit too hard with no give and take in the first movie.

They better not kill off Megatron in this either, that would piss me off.

It looked like there were three of them - you definitely see him ruin Starscream's shit. But I can't really tell if the other one is definitely Blackout, or Megs with some of Blackout's stuff. Since Megs did get a little bit of a facelift.

But it's great that the guy's back. That's totally cool!

I'm not sure that you guys realize that Michael Bay had to have a fight with the producers in order to get ANY scenes with robots talking to each other in them.

Personally, I'm glad that the movie has, you know, people as characters. Especially the first one, it was greatly aided by the gradual set-up of the film's central conceit. Now this second one is upping the ante in terms of action, spending more time with the histories and personalities of the Transformers, but also continuing the story of the previous film's main character. It does this because it was written by professional screenwriters and not people they found on the Internet.

Frankly, Shia LaBeouf is what makes the first movie watchable whenever there aren't giant robots fighting. And that's kinda expensive. I didn't need to see Jazz get five minutes of backstory and then an overwrought war-movie death, and if I didn't need to see it then people who aren't Transfans probably didn't need to either. (Frankly, the point of Jazz's character is more than made by the very fact that he stands up to Megatron alone despite being about the size of his thigh. Show, don't tell.)

Megatron is also huge and intimidating, and Jazz wasn't, because the car they were 'provided' so to speak was too small to make an intimidating robot out of. He's not back because Bay doesn't really like how tiny Jazz was, IIRC.

And if you doubt this, Bay apparently has one of the Decepticons stomp on Jazz's corpse at the bottom of the Laurentian Abyss. Also from the same source, apparently Megatron's tank treades aren't from Decepticon Brawl, they're from another Decepticon who gives up his spark willingly to revive Megatron.

Also Soundwave, as a satellite, scans Earth for alt-forms for the Decepticons, who pick up their alt-forms from him as they fly past him on re-entry - cool idea eh?

In other news, Frank Welker is doing the voice for Soundwave.

Have you tried reading the rest of the thread instead of just hitting "post reply"? It's not like there was a discussion regarding this very same thing, with very interesting points being made.

I liked how the first movie introduced the Transformers as nigh mythic machines in the sight of puny mere mortals like Sam Witwicky, with them falling to Earth on robot meteors and rising from the craters with awe-inspiring musacks and shooting magical holograms from their eyes - showing stuff like robot volcanos and scenes of eldritch mechanical warfare. And urinating on people.

Personally, I had no problem with the first movie's portrayal. It showed the Transformers from a human's narrow microscopic perspective and, yes, it served to introduced them while also giving us the basic premise of epic that'll be expanded in Revenge. And we got an awesome cast of dorky kids, hot chicks, badass soldiers and silly spies.

It was the penultimate summer blockbuster!

Early in pre-production for the first film, the executives at Dreamworks were extremely apprehensive of the Transformers talking at all. IIRC, the earliest drafts for the scrip reflected the position; none of the Autobots or Decepticons spoke. Bay, the screenwriters (Orci and Kurtzman), and Hasbro fought very hard against that decision, eventually wining out.

In an interview Orci explained their position: If none of the Transformers talk, then they all become the same, so why bother using any particular set of characters over another? He also said without such character identification, it might as well have been a GoBots movie instead.

You have to think about this from the perspective of people who make movies. The dinosaurs don't talk to each other in Jurassic Park. Even the all-CG aliens in Star Wars always have humans in the scene to interact with. I suppose you could say Gollum got scenes with himself and himself, but still, if one isn't really aware of what Transformers are and why they are popular the idea of cars hanging out and saying interesting things to each other--in a live-action film--sounds really weird.

Bay is a hack, but he also knows how to shoot a big action movie and he's now sufficiently immersed in Transformers lore to, say, cast Peter Cullen and Frank Welker. Spielberg also knows a thing or two about Transformers, reportedly, and he's usually pretty involved with movies he takes a producer credit on.

A lot of the decisions that piss fanboys off are very understandable from the perspective of the guys that are putting up the $200 million to get the movie made at all. Personally, I'm amazed that through Orci and Bay that the fans have had so much influence on the course of the film franchise. It's not like anybody makes Orci go on the internet and have lengthy discussions with fans, some of whom are as coherent as a bipolar chimpanzee.

Another thing on their mind was probably the cost of having the robots appear on the screen, which afaik was something pretty outrageous like a million dollars per minute. The producers probably figured something along the lines of "more bang for our bucks" by choosing robot fighting over robot talking.

Luckily we have been promised a lot more robot screen time, including robot on robot conversation action, so let's hope we can hold them to that promise.
