There's a book in the local library that says the explosion was caused by Tesla's 100' (or however big it was) Tesla coil. Of couse this is the same book that says that the HAARP array in Alaska can change global weather patterns and destroy the ozone layer. Tesla was also a great motivator for the Niagara Falls electric plant, and I think there's a statue of him near the Falls.

How different was the particle beam from modern ones?
Today, we can create electron, helium nuclei or proton beams that mimic directed lightning bolts, they have to have a charge to avoid duispersing in the atmosphere (hence the blue/green/purple ionised beam effect).
Only problem is that the Earth's magnetic field would hinder long range attacks and the atmosphere would soon drag too much on the beam too.
NPBs can be used in space though but will soon disperse over long ranges, but no thermal blooming effect will occur like in atmosphere for CPBs.
Just imagine if Tunguska WAS Tesla's superweapon. How would the world change then once we had particle beam artillery as it were that did many times the damage of a single nuke at that time (well, shortly after I mean).
