How would the public react? World leaders? Religious leaders? Fundies? Etc?

Some world leaders would welcome them with open arms, the exception being Saddam and Kim Jong Il. Fundies, of course, would attempt a few terrorist acts on them. Moderate religions would look on them with skepticality or welcome them with open arms, depending on the religion.

Fundies would call it yet another conspiracy. Aliens can't possibly exist, as the Bible never mentions God creating them.

I imagine many religious leaders who are more reasonable would want to talk with these aliens about their religious beliefs, if they have any. A species that can travel faster than light could very well have ditched religious beliefs after attaining such an advanced understanding of physics. Or they could have discovered God and locked him up in a lab ... who knows? At which point, the Pope would demand letting him out, which could start an interstellar war, and we'd probably lose unless the aliens just happen to be running Mac OS 8, at which point we can send them a virus.

Dubya would probably fuck up their language even worse than he's fucked up the English language.

Not necessarily. There religion may be founded in fact. After all, not all religions necessarily have to be founded in worshipping some made up deity.

Who knows, perhaps they really have some great and powerful alien guy who they worship.

Everyone would act like idiots trying to upstage the others.

But then again, what alien would be so stupid as to land on Earth? We haven't even attained interstellar travel.

If they are advanced, they have to have discovered the game that is soccer and could immediatly play a friendly match. If they refuse, they are out to enslave us, so nuke ´em!!!

I think the public would freak the hell out. There would be mass riots and chaos. The very religious would denounce it as a hoax.

There would be absolute chaos. Then Bush, under manipulation by Ashcroft, would convince the aliens to lend him some of their tech so he can "bring order back to the country".

Then he creates a super-loyal army of soldiers, organic or robotic, and takes over the US. Then takes over the world.

This way, he has "brought order to the world" in a way.

What if we humans would be totally incapable of communicating with them?? You seem to prematurely assume that Extra-Terrestrials have languages at all, and perhaps they might be so vastly different from us that cooperation would be nigh-on impossible.

Or what if the alien sighting stories are true, and that the extraterrestrials don't even attempt to understand us??

Or even worse - what if the paranoid conspiracy theories about the extraterrestrials giving advanced technology to the USA in exchange for permission to abduct humans also are true??

Why would Saddam Hussein and Kim Jong-il be upset? For all we know, these guys are intergalactic arms dealers who trade slaves for guns and they just happen to be some of that select group of leaders immoral enough to make the deal.

Though I suppose in an emergency situation like that every western country in the world would empty its prisons and round up illegal aliens and hawk 'em.

Well, world leaders would be all in a big fucking uproar, depending on how the ETs approached us. I don't agree that the religious would get all upset -- not even Fundies -- at least, not at first.

See, the Biblical description of "angels" if we take them literally, pretty much describe CE-2s and CE-3s. I think if ETs showed up, bible-thumpers would assume they're angels -- until they caught one takin' a leak behind the local sports bar, anyway...

Well, if those conspiracy theories are right, it isn't much of a deal... what do we get out of it? Stealth technology? PCs? Microwave ovens? But look what we have to put up with in return: a whole culture of slack-jawed yokels and Patchouli-dipped potheads who insist that beings with technology sufficiently advanced to permit interstellar travel came all the way to this little backwater planet just to study us talking monkeys... yeah, we're getting jipped here, kids...

This would depend on the aliens' appearance. Some contactees describe the aliens as looking like tall, fair, beautiful humans - and the people supposedly encountering these Scandinavian-looking extraterrestrials usually describe them as rather neutral or benevolent. However, there's also the imp-like Stereotypical Grey AliensTM who easily fit descriptions of demons. (some depictions of SGAs certainly look evil!)

Perhaps the Christians would end up fanning the flames of hatred between two alien species already hostile towards each other?? ("The Awakening Of The Stars" by Bal-Sagoth starts playing in the background)

You're sarcastic, aren't you??? However, you should keep in mind that not all people claiming to have been abducted are slack-jawed yokels and potheads. One of them was a British police officer who was snatched aboard a spaceship landing on a road while driving around on a midnight patrol. (however, seriously - couldn't those aliens have chosen a less obvious landing spot??? And how did they avoid the Air Force??)

As an aside note, you are probably away that most conspiracy theorists believe that the real purpose of the abductions is to gather DNA for the SGAs' next insidious project: Breeding a hybrid race which will be half SGA, half human.

(no jokes about Calista Flockhart, please)
