Basically more a mix of historical mysticism, UFOs, and boring-as-baby-shit "reality" shows along with some lingering WWII/Hitler programming in the mix to round out the lineup. History Channel is just another of the many once-great cable networks that have steadily become unwatchable.

Unfortunately, all of the TV networks realized that the smart, discerning viewer represents a much smaller demographic than the mouth-breathing idiot.

These days, the best thing about the Discovery Channel is MythBusters, and even then, the average intellectual level and level of expectation of Discovery Channel's present target audience can be best summed up in a quote from one of the presenters: "Jamie want big boom."

Right from the start they had hours and hours of Hancock/Bauval/West Atlantean tripe. Hancock would probably have been forced back into more mundane journalism if not for the three "educational" channels. Their historical documentaries were simplified, dumbed down, and usually inaccurate junk borrowed from A&E, and half of that was Biblical history. I really can't remember a time when they had more content than crap. In a way it's better now. Most of their programming isn't even disguised as documentaries any more.

I was thinking primarily of John Romer's Byzantium — The Lost Empire, The Seven Wonders of the World, and Romer's Egypt, among a few others. I watched all of them on Discovery Civilization back in 1998 - 2000 before they disappeared off the airwaves and I've never seen them since, which was a shame, because it was the only time that watching television ever was as entertaining and productive and enriching for me as reading a book.
