Re: The OotS thread
Wouldn't the Phylactery getting destroyed mean that Xykon will now have basically one 'life' left? Am I understanding it correctly?

No what O-chul has done is been brought to zero or even negative hit points dozens of times.

Yeah. Destroying the phylactery means he won't ressurect.
It's sometimes assumed that they can create new ones -
And, incidentally, also means he'll be spending some time with Cedric, Lee or Nero, perhaps.

Says nothing about it, however. He may never be able to replace it.An integral part of becoming a lich is creating a magic phylactery in which the character stores its life force. As a rule, the only way to get rid of a lich for sure is to destroy its phylactery. Unless its phylactery is located and destroyed, a lich reappears 1d10 days after its apparent death.
Each lich must make its own phylactery, which requires the Craft Wondrous Item feat. The character must be able to cast spells and have a caster level of 11th or higher. The phylactery costs 120,000 gp and 4,800 XP to create and has a caster level equal to that of its creator at the time of creation.
The most common form of phylactery is a sealed metal box containing strips of parchment on which magical phrases have been transcribed. The box is Tiny and has 40 hit points, hardness 20, and a break DC of 40.
Other forms of phylacteries can exist, such as rings, amulets, or similar items.
And, incidentally, also means he'll be spending some time with Cedric, Lee or Nero, perhaps.

Yes, but he can just make another one given a little time. He even points this out to Redcloak during Start of Darkness.Isolder74 wrote:Wouldn't the Phylactery getting destroyed mean that Xykon will now have basically one 'life' left? Am I understanding it correctly?
Destroying the phylactery would make a sudden, major attack on Xykon capable of killing him. However, he's really damn powerful. Alternatively, it would slow him down as he makes a new phylactery, giving the OotS time to beat him to the next Gate. If they knew where it was.

I thought a lich's soul was only in the phylactery when the lich's body was destroyed, it didn't stay there all the time. I know V can still keep making saves for being able to hold V's breath, but was thinking that based on the "skrrlch" that the windpipe had been crushed so V would not be able to breathe normally thereafter until being healed making death by suffocation a guarantee.CaptainChewbacca wrote:Strangling and strangled are two different things. In D20 mechanics, you have to fail saves on several rounds (each fail making things progressively harder) before you actually DIE of strangulation.avatarxprime wrote:Just wondering, does this mean V actually remembered Blackwing? Has Blackwing been doping V with ginkgo all this time?
Anyway, I'm actually surprised V is still up and about considering the prior strip seemed to indicate that Xykon crushed V's windpipe.
The damage from being suffocated is non-lethal, but I thought once you go to negative hit points you still die the next round since you are now "suffocated," not that you can still recover thereafter if you get exposed to air.Ted C wrote:D&D doesn't actually have rules for specific injuries. You can drown or strangle someone by keeping them from breathing for longer than they can hold their breath, but it doesn't actually do hit point damage, so you pretty much recover instantly once you're getting air again.

Based on 543 it would seem that they have never resurrected O'Chul and Redcloak takes care to make sure that despite the torture and Xykon's games, he doesn't actually die.Styphon wrote:You know... After spending a bit of time at the Oots forum it seems that in Start of Darkness they stated that Xykon's soul is in his body so long as it is intact. The soul only goes to the phylactery in the event Xykon's body is destroyed so he should be just fine, albeit significantly more mortal.Peptuck wrote:Except tossing it into the rift means the soul is destroyed, completely. Mortal and pissed as hell. Taking him out would still be damn near impossible, shy of massively overwhelming numbers.
Now, if they were to get MitD to join their side and take on Xykon there could be a chance of success. Provided Xykon doesn't have means of teleporting his ass out of harm's way.
Have we figured out what the lowest possible strength score Xykon has, based off some of the physical feats he's pulled off?

Hmm... if the phylactery goes into the snarl, then if/when xyklon bites the dust... his soul will get transferred into the snarl. Most interesting.

Also destroying the phylactery makes it more likely that Xyklon keeps V around to torture, instead of just killing her.. which further increases the dramatic probability that it will be destroyed.AMT wrote:Hmm... if the phylactery goes into the snarl, then if/when xyklon bites the dust... his soul will get transferred into the snarl. If he could replace it, remember that crafting magic items takes 1 day per 1000 gp, so the OotS would have a 120 day window to take him down.NecronLord wrote:Yeah. Destroying the phylactery means he won't ressurect.

Ha ! Hope the bird lives though.
"There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year old's life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves orcs." - John Rogers

Oh man, that was about as V as it is possible to be. Wow. That comic just made my whole day.
Re: The OotS thread
Familiars have Improved Evasion, so if the bird saves, no damage. If it doesn't, half damage, which might still kill it. Still, who cares? Either way, likely to send the thing to the Snarl.
Of course, that might alert the Snarl to the fact that there's an open rift. Remember how they were wondering about that?

Can ten damage really kill V's familiar though? Because that's average damage from a saved Explosive runes. Max would be eighteen.
Re: The OotS thread
As a level 14 wizard with at most a +1 con modifier, we expect V to have about 45-60 base hp; V's familiar will have half of that.consequences wrote:Can ten damage really kill V's familiar though? Because that's average damage from a saved Explosive runes. Max would be eighteen.

Re: The OotS thread
Well, that depends on whether the Bear's endurance is still up, I have no idea how superb dispelling works, or whether it might have left any of V's buffs up(the fact that the meteor swarm didn't kill him makes me think the fire protection is still active). Regardless, it's probably impossible for an explosive runes to kill V's familiar, even with a failed save and max damage.Sriad wrote:As a level 14 wizard with at most a +1 con modifier, we expect V to have about 45-60 base hp; V's familiar will have half of that.consequences wrote:Can ten damage really kill V's familiar though? Right, having checked superb dispelling, it's at least possible for any of the previously cast buffs to still be active. Also, that's another frakking epic spell, with a 10d6 backlash damage.
