Amen to that. I got the Orange Box solely for Portal, guess I'll have to play HL2 too.

I never said anything was impossible. What I said was that you get vast more return for your marketing and PR dollar if you focus it on a new/upcoming game than on new maps/prettier guns. I also said that getting people to buy an older game that has DLC instead of a brand spanking new game (that might also have DLC) is an immense uphill battle.

If there's any reason why DLC isn't as big as it should be I think it's that those two facts are firmly embraced by the corporate offices to their myopic disadvantage.

PS, people who will buy l4d2 without knowing anything about it would ALSO buy a dozen $5 tiny mods for it.
Exactly! So, to the marketing geniuses' eyes, should you focus your attention on something where quality and marketing wont effect the total sales numbers, or something where good quality and marketing can get you even more customers than you have now? To a business school grad it's axiomatic: always increase your market share and your target audience. If you let it shrink you're signing your own death sentence.

That being said, either we're missing something huge or they're fucking retarded. As per my PM I should have something for you in six to eight hours.

I do remember 'Unit-a-week' for Total Annihilation. That was back when? 1998?

Then one of de Harclay's pikemen, concealed beneath the bridge, thrust upwards between the planks and skewered the Earl of Hereford through the anus, twisting the head of the iron pike into his intestines. His dying screams turned the advance into a panic."'

What are the chances of this game actually coming out on time anyway? Valve don't exactly have a good record for keeping to release dates. Though I'm sure that if it gets pushed back 3 or 6 months the forum tards will claim that their threatened boycott was the reason.

So what? Are you trying to suggest that "DLC" can't be free? There's nothing inherently implying it must cost money.

Well to be fair, I did ask what was the first payable DLC. :)

I could have sworn that "payable" wasn't in there when I replied. Oh well.

Meh. I never got around to buying L4D, so I guess now I'll just wait for the finished product L4D2.

As for downloadable content, that was supposed to be one of the *killer* features of Xbox Live back when the service was launched in 2002. In the beginning, pretty much the only good network-enabled title was Mechassault, and I remember waiting months and MONTHS for the incredibly hyped DLC to be released. When it finally did come out, (I think it cost like $10 or something) it was completely underwhelming and unbalanced the gameplay of an already unbalanced game.
