I'll be the first to admit my math is flaky, and probably my spelling most of the time. However i've just finished looking over the numbers on wookieepedia for stormtrooper organization and i can't get them to add up quite right...
this is what i've pulled together so far:
Legion 8,192
Regiment 2500 (4 per Legion)
Batallion 820 to 834 (3 per Regiment)
Company 225 (4 per Battallion)
Platoon 45 (5 per Company)
Squad 9 (5 per Platoon)
this is for non GAR so no clone organization... Any help with figuring this out would be appreciated.

Re: stormtrooper organization help?
If it is all infantry then there should be about 10,800. However, as in most modern militaries, there should be a H&S battalion in there, and those generaly require much less personel then a dedicated infantry battalion. Don't know any numbers for stormtrooper support or even if they don't depend on the navy for that.

Conversion Table:
2000 Mockingbirds = 2 Kilomockingbirds
Basic Unit of Laryngitis = 1 Hoarsepower
453.6 Graham Crackers = 1 Pound Cake
1 Kilogram of Falling Figs - 1 Fig Newton
Time Between Slipping on a Banana Peel and Smacking the Pavement = 1 Bananosecond
Half of a Large Intestine = 1 Semicolon

Re: stormtrooper organization help?
The ISB tells us this: Stormtroopers and the Order of Battle
Stormtroopers technically do fit into the Order of Battle. But these elite troops continue to be a source of mystery to the regular army, even at the level of their organization. The major difference seems to be the complete lack of support personnel. It is known that Stormtroopers do siphon off some supplies from the normal chain of logistics, but not nearly enough to support a force as large as the Stormtroopers appear to be. Whether they can somehow "live off the land", have a shadow network which resupplies them in order to enhance their mystery, or really not be in need of resupply is simply not known.
The end result is that a Stormtrooper unit is a pure combat unit.
A Stormtrooper battallion has 820 men, just like any other battalion. But every individual is either combat command or a trooper - there is even a complete absence of staff officers.
Other differences, although minor, do appear. Stormtrooper squads vary in number of men to a greater degree than in the regular Army. The level of organization corresponding to a battlegroup is called a legion. While there is no larger unit of Stormtrooper organization than the legion, legions have been known to appear from other sectors to join in a major offensive with legions which belong to the Sector Group
Considering the close resemblence the Stormtrooper OoB apparently has to the regular Army's, a Legion should have about 13,120 troops (4 regiments of 4 battalions each). However, if the Stormtrooper OoB has the same augmentability as the regular Army's, that could easily go up to +/- 340,000 troops.

...No need of resupply... no staff officers... I honestly find that unbelievable.
At the very least, it would greatly undermine the stormtroopers' effectiveness in large groups.

Re: stormtrooper organization help?
I suspect that it's that there's no "official" need for resupply or staff officers for the stormtrooper corps, but if the movies are any indication stormtroopers seem to work often with other service branches (Veers was army officer but the troopers invading echo base seemed to be stormtroopers) and also there's there might "unofficial"(read classified) source of resupply and/or staff officers in the Stormtrooper corps.Simon_Jester wrote:...No need of resupply... no staff officers... EDIT:granted I might be a bit bias seeing as I was in the staff branch (only a private though not an officer) during my service, but it seems impossible to have a working military unit without staff and/or resupply.
I may be an idiot, but I'm a tolerated idiot

Re: stormtrooper organization help?
Resupply is a must for anything better than a bunch of mercenaries with disparate equipment, and even they will need things like food.
Staff isn't a must for large armies, but large armies become miserably inefficient without staffers.

Re: stormtrooper organization help?
The ISB was written by a Rebel for Rebels. Seeing as STs were almost always encountered as detachments to other regular military forces as opposed to integrated into their own large scale formations (such as Endor), it is not surprising that the support and command stucture was not often encountered by them. The ISB tells us this: Stormtroopers and the Order of Battle

Go to the "Armed Forces of the Imperium" section and there is a summary of the Storm Trooper Corps (Imperial Marines) there. It is a fan fic of sorts but as you will see it is well referenced to canon via actual endnotes.
