South Carolina's Governor Sanford Admits Extramarital Affair

Sanford, missing since Thursday, reportedly located
By John O'Connor and Clif LeBlanc

The whereabouts of Gov. Mark Sanford was unknown for nearly four days, and some state leaders question who was in charge of the executive office.
But Sanford’s office told the lieutenant governor’s office Monday afternoon that Sanford has been reached and he is fine, said Frank Adams, head of Lt. Gov. Andre Bauer’s office on aging.
Neither the governor’s office nor the State Law Enforcement Division, which provides security for governors, had been able to reach Sanford after he left the mansion Thursday in a black SLED Suburban SUV, said Sen. Jake Knotts and three others familiar with the situation but declined to be identified.

Sanford’s last known whereabouts had been near Atlanta because a mobile telephone tower picked up a signal from his phone, authorities said. His office now knows where he is, Adams said.
First lady Jenny Sanford told The Associated Press earlier Monday her husband has been gone for several days and she did not know where.
She said she was not concerned.
The governor’s state and personal phones had been turned off and he had not responded to phone or text messages since at least the weekend, a source familiar with the situation said.
Most mobile phones cannot be tracked if they are turned off.
Jenny Sanford said the governor said he needed time away from their children to write something.
The governor’s office issued a statement Monday afternoon: "Gov. Sanford is taking some time away from the office this week to recharge after the stimulus battle and the legislative session, and to work on a couple of projects that have fallen by the wayside. We are not going to discuss the specifics of his travel arrangements or his security arrangements."
One official familiar with the situation said there was no indication that foul play might have been involved because Sanford occasionally makes trips without his security detail.
Knotts, a longtime Sanford critic, said he contacted SLED Chief Reggie Lloyd Saturday after he heard reports the governor could not be reached.
"Chief Lloyd confirmed that my information is legitimate," Knotts said. "He shared my concerns" about succession of power in Sanford’s absence, the Lexington Republican said. Lloyd could not be reached immediately on Monday.
"I was recently made aware that Governor Sanford has frequently been eluding SLED agents and disappearing at odd times," Knotts said. Previously, Sanford has not been out of all contact - including with his own office - for this long before, a source, who insisted on anonymity, said.
Knotts said the state’s chief executive should never be unreachable.
"As the head of our state, in the unfortunate event of a state of emergency or homeland security situation, Governor Sanford should be available at all times to the Chief of SLED," the senator said.
"If for any reason, including the unknown whereabouts of the Governor, he is unable to perform the duties of his office the Constitution provides that the lieutenant governor assumes the position of governor.
"I want to know immediately who is running the executive branch in the governor’s absence," Knotts said.
The question of succession came just after Sanford became governor in 2003.
He joined the Air Force Reserve and was sent to Alabama for two week’s training with his unit, the 315th Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron based in Charleston. Sanford did not transfer power to Bauer at the time, saying he would be in regular contact with his office.
Sanford said then he would transfer authority in writing to the lieutenant governor only if he were called to active duty.

Honestly I think we in S.C. are better off with him missing. Hopefully this will keep him from running in 2012 I dread the idea of a President Sanford.

I got five bucks down on week-long gay orgy/camping trip with him and his four close friends, two galleons of whiskey, latex and a freshly tailored gimp outfit for the good governor.

What do I base this on? Only the fact he's Republican and he's done it before. I'd say the Vegas odds are one in eight, maybe even one in six that's what he's doing at this very moment.

*Edit done it before referring to the fact he's vanished for days at a time, not for him being caught in a five way gang-bang in a gimp costume.

According to the now-updated story at the link in the OP, the governor literally took a hike:
Gov. Mark Sanford’s staff said late Monday that the governor is hiking on the Appalachian Trail, ending four days during which staff and state officials said they had not heard from him.
By the way:
First lady Jenny Sanford said Monday her husband has been gone for several days over Father’s Day weekend and she did not know where.

She said she was not concerned.
So he disappeared, without saying where he was going, and she wasn't concerned? Not even a teeny bit?

Not to worry, the again-updated OP link says he will be back tomorrow:

Sanford back Wednesday, his office says

By JOHN O’CONNOR and CLIF LeBLANC - ... S.C. Gov. Mark Sanford’s staff said this morning that the governor plans to return to his office Wednesday.

Late Monday, his office said the governor was hiking on the Appalachian Trail, ending four days during which staff and state officials said they had not heard from him.

In a statement, Joel Sawyer, Sanford's spokesman said, "Governor Sanford called to check in with his chief of staff this morning. It would be fair to say the governor was somewhat taken aback by all of the interest this trip has gotten.

"Given the circumstances and the attention this has garnered, the governor communicated to us that he plans on returning to the office tomorrow.

Neither Sanford’s office nor the State Law Enforcement Division, which provides security for governors, had been able to reach Sanford since he left the mansion Thursday in a black Suburban SUV assigned to his security detail, said state Sen. Jake Knotts , R-Lexington, and three others familiar with the situation, but who declined to be identified.

On Monday, Sawyer would not disclose where on the trail the governor was hiking, nor would he reveal whether Sanford was hiking alone.

Sanford’s last known location was near Atlanta late last week. A mobile telephone tower there picked up a signal from his phone, according to a source familiar with the situation.

Since then, the governor’s state and personal phones had been turned off, and Sanford had not responded to phone or text messages, a source said. Most mobile phones cannot be tracked if they are turned off.

First lady Jenny Sanford said Monday her husband has been gone for several days over Father’s Day weekend and she did not know where.

She said she was not concerned.

“He was writing something and wanted some space to get away from the kids,” Jenny Sanford told The Associated Press while vacationing with the couple’s four sons at their Sullivan’s Island beach house.

The two-term governor is chairman of the Republican Governors Association. This spring, Sanford became known nationally as the most outspoken governor who opposed federal stimulus money. That position won Sanford national attention until he lost a court battle.

Sawyer said Monday the governor told staffers late last week where he was going to be.

“Before leaving last week, he let staff know his whereabouts and that he’d be difficult to reach,” Sawyer said in a interview with The State.

In an earlier statement Monday, Sanford’s office said: “Gov. Sanford is taking some time away from the office this week to recharge after the stimulus battle and the legislative session, and to work on a couple of projects that have fallen by the wayside.

“We are not going to discuss the specifics of his travel arrangements or his security arrangements,” the statement said.

One official familiar with the situation said there was no indication Sanford had been harmed. He regularly makes trips without his security detail.

Sanford usually uses the Suburban, which is assigned to agents who transport him, the source said.

Knotts, a longtime Sanford critic, said he contacted SLED Chief Reggie Lloyd Saturday after he heard reports the governor could not be reached.

“Chief Lloyd confirmed that my information is legitimate,” said Knotts. “He shared my concerns” about succession of power.

“I was recently made aware that Governor Sanford has frequently been eluding SLED agents and disappearing at odd times,” Knotts said.

Lloyd could not be reached for comment late Monday.

On previous unescorted trips, Sanford has not been out of all contact - including with his own office - for this long, a source said.

The state’s chief executive should never be unreachable, Knotts said.

“As the head of our state, in the unfortunate event of a state of emergency or homeland security situation, Governor Sanford should be available at all times to the chief of SLED,” the senator said.

“I want to know immediately who is running the executive branch in the governor’s absence,” Knotts said.

In an interview later in the day, Sawyer said, “Should any emergencies arise between the times in which he checks in, our staff would obviously be in contact with other state officials as the situation warrants before making any decisions.”

The S.C. Constitution says the lieutenant governor may act for the governor in an emergency.

The Constitution is silent on the lieutenant governor’s power in non-emergencies or whether the governor has the power to appoint a designee to act in his place.

The question of succession came up just after Sanford became governor in 2003.

He joined the Air Force Reserve and was sent to Alabama for two week’s training with his unit, the 315th Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron, based in Charleston.

Sanford did not transfer power to Republican Lt. Gov Andre Bauer at the time, saying he would be in regular contact with his office.

Sanford said then he would transfer authority in writing to the lieutenant governor only if he were called to active duty.

Bauer said he was not contacted about Sanford’s current absence until Monday morning, when the governor’s office informed his office.

No one discussed a transfer of power to him, Bauer said.

Bob McAlister, chief of staff for the late Gov. Carroll Campbell, said it was not unusual for Campbell to get away from staff or even his security detail.

But Campbell never cut off contact completely, McAllister said.

If Campbell was on vacation or deep-sea fishing, often the press would not be told, McAllister said. But Campbell’s office tried to keep Lt. Gov. Nick Theodore, a Democrat, informed about Campbell’s schedule, particularly when he was traveling abroad.

“From a professional standpoint, this can’t happen,” McAlister said of Sanford’s absence. Residents and public officials need to know where the governor is, he added.

“It’s very disconcerting,” McAlister said.

These are my favorite parts:
In a statement, Joel Sawyer, Sanford's spokesman said, "Governor Sanford called to check in with his chief of staff this morning. It would be fair to say the governor was somewhat taken aback by all of the interest this trip has gotten.

"Given the circumstances and the attention this has garnered, the governor communicated to us that he plans on returning to the office tomorrow.

And:
Knotts, a longtime Sanford critic, said he contacted SLED Chief Reggie Lloyd Saturday after he heard reports the governor could not be reached.

“Chief Lloyd confirmed that my information is legitimate,” said Knotts. “He shared my concerns” about succession of power.

“I was recently made aware that Governor Sanford has frequently been eluding SLED agents and disappearing at odd times,” Knotts said.
The story also goes on to say that (supposedly) the governor's staff knew his whereabouts. Yet his wife did not? Something stinks there.

I can't say I'd even heard of this clown until the last few days, but given this nonsense alone, I can't see how he can possibly be considered a realistic candidate for president now. He sounds like a flake. That, and the whole not telling his lieutenant governor where he's going and keeping the governor's schedule secret. That's just crazy. It's bad form (to say the least) not telling your family where you are going. But it seems like dereliction of the office (or a sort) to wander off without telling your second-in-command where you are going.

Sanford has been grandstanding up to 11 on a 10 notch dial lately. First, he rejected the Stimulus funds with a huge press conference, causing his own party in the state to vote to take the money anyway. Upset that his state's taxpayer dollars were coming back to the state despite that grandstanding, he began a court case to stop the funds from coming in to avoid massive layoffs in emergency personnel and teachers(He lost). He called the Stimulus a path to "A thing called slavery", and has compared Obama to Mugabe.

He's a lunatic. And I don't believe that story. Sorry. Does not match earlier statements.

This reminds me of something my grandmother once told me.

She was working for a MP (member of parliment), and she was given a number she was only to contact him at in the event of an emergency. A very specific lists of emergencies. She was also given very specific instructions on what to say.

If his wife didn't know where he was, he was at that phone number. The same with journalist's in general.

His usual claim was 'out with the boys', but other ones included camping.

Occasional over-night camping, or week-end get away camping.

You can probably guess what it was assumed he was doing. The one time she had to call (the guys kid had been in an accident), a woman answered.

Sure its sourced by "anon" but this is too crazy:
GREENVILLE, S.C. -- WYFF News 4 has received exclusive information from sources who say they have information about Gov. Mark Sanford's whereabouts during a mysterious absence over the past several days.

Sanford's wife Jenny said she last talked to him on Thursday, and though she didn't know where he is, she said she wasn't concerned. She said he had left to have time to write.

Joel Sawyer, communications director for the governor's office, then said the governor had been on the Appalachian Trail. Sawyer said staffers heard from Sanford on Tuesday morning and the governor plans to return Wednesday.

Sawyer said the governor is surprised by all the attention.

On Tuesday, sources told News 4's Nigel Robertson that a state vehicle is missing and was tracked down, not to the Appalachian Trail, but to the Hartsfield-Jackson Airport in Atlanta.

Sources told Robertson that a federal agent spotted Sanford in the airport boarding a plane. Robertson was told that the governor was not accompanied by security detail.

Sanford has been out of reach for more than four days, including Father's Day.

Sawyer has emphasized that the governor was hiking on the Appalachian Trail and that it wasn't something the staff or Jenny Sanford were concerned about.

But sources told WYFF News 4 that the federal agent who spotted Sanford saw him at the Atlanta airport, which is about 80 miles from the start of the trail.

WYFF News 4 has not yet confirmed where the plane was going or how the governor got to the airport, but it is clear there are two very different stories.

News 4 called the governor's office, and was told again by staffers that they stand by their original statement that the governor is hiking the Appalachian Trail. They did not want to comment on this story.
Emphasis mine, you can read the story here at one of the SC NBC stations.

Actually it looks like the car at Atlanta story may be a false lead, but CNN has confirmed a car that is ordinarily driven by Sanford and appears to be the one he drove off in for his "hike" was parked as of today at Columbia, South Carolina's airport parking lot.
From Peter Hamby
CNN

COLUMBIA, South Carolina (CNN) — A black Chevy Suburban believed to have been used by South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford to leave town on an extended walkabout has been found in the parking lot of Columbia Metropolitan Airport.

CNN was alerted to its location by a law enforcement official.

Sanford is expected to return to Columbia tomorrow after a mysterious six-day absence. His office has said the governor, a possible 2012 presidential candidate, has been hiking the Appalachian Trail to clear his head after a tough legislative session.

The SUV is outfitted with blue police lights and two-way radio. Inside the vehicle: A baseball cap, running shoes, sunscreen, a pair of shorts, a canvas bag and a sleeping bag.

A parking permit for the school attended by Sanford’s children is visible on the windshield.
http://cnnwire.blogs.cnn.com/2009/06/23 ... a-airport/

The cell phone from the Atlanta Airport cell tower still fits within this story if Sanford used it while waiting for a connecting flight there.

More information from another link notes that his sleeping bag was left in the suburban which seems odd if he was really going hiking for days...
According to CNN, a baseball cap, running shoes, sunscreen, a pair of shorts, a canvas bag and a sleeping bag can all be seen inside the vehicle.

Its safe to say the story keeps on getting more interesting...

So...who's betting we will soon hear something about how he "broke his vows" and is "deeply sorry for this transgression" while also having "asked Jesus to forgive him" and of course asserting that "as I am not a democrat, I am perfectly able to cheat/have gay sex without me destroying the country".

And he has been found:
The State.com wrote:Sanford met in Atlanta after returning from South America
Governor says he never hiked Appalachian Trail; says he cruised along the coast of Buenos Aires to unwind after stressful legislative session
By GINA SMITH

ATLANTA -- Gov. Mark Sanford arrived in the Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport this morning, having wrapped up a seven-day visit to Buenos Aires, Argentina, he said. Sanford said he had not been hiking along the Appalachian Trail, as his staff said in a Tuesday statement to the media.

Sanford's whereabouts had been unknown since Thursday, and the mystery surrounding his absence fueled speculation about where he had been and who's in charge in his absence. His emergence Wednesday ended the mystery.

Sanford, in an exclusive interview with The State, said he decided at the last minute to go to the South American country to recharge after a difficult legislative session in which he battled with lawmakers over how to spend federal stimulus money.

Sanford said he had considered hiking on the Appalachian Trail, an activity he said he has enjoyed since he was a high school student.

"But I said 'no' I wanted to do something exotic," Sanford said "... It's a great city."

Sanford, in a brief interview in the nation's busiest airport, said he has been to the city twice before, most recently about a year and half ago during a Commerce Department trip.

Sanford said he was alone on the trip. He declined to give any additional details about what he did other than to say he drove along the coastline.

Sanford, who was wearing a blue and white button down shirt and brown denim pants, said he left for Buenos Aires on Thursday night from Columbia International Airport and had originally planned to come back tomorrow.

Media reports said a SLED SUV the governor drove that night was spotted in the airport's parking lot.

The governor said he cut his trip short after his chief of staff, Scott English, told him his trip was gaining a lot of media attention and he needed to come back.

When asked why his staff said he was on the Appalachian Trail, Sanford replied, "I don't know."

Sanford later said "in fairness to his staff," he had told them he might go hiking on the Appalachian Trial.

Sanford said he decided not to return via the Columbia airport to avoid the media. The State Media Company was the only media who greeted Sanford this morning.

"I don't know how this thing got blown out of proportion," Sanford said.

Sanford said he has taken adventure trips for years to unwind. He has visited such places as the coast of Turkey, the Greek Isles and South America. He was with friends sometimes and sometimes by himself.

"I would get out of the bubble I am in." Sanford said.

Sanford said the legislative session was a difficult one for him, particularly losing the fight over whether he should accept stimulus $700 million in stimulus money he wanted lawmakers to spend on debt instead of urgent budget needs.

"It was a long session and I needed a break," Sanford said.

After a brief conversation with a reporter, Sanford was escorted away by an aide.

Sanford, in a brief interview in the nation's busiest airport, said he has been to the city twice before, most recently about a year and half ago during a Commerce Department trip.

Sanford said he was alone on the trip. He declined to give any additional details about what he did other than to say he drove along the coastline.
Hm, let's see, the Appalachian Trail DOES seem tempting, but, nah, let's instead just leave the country on a whim.
Sanford later said "in fairness to his staff," he had told them he might go hiking on the Appalachian Trial.
Yeah. Or, go to South America. One of those. It's a toss-up.
"I don't know how this thing got blown out of proportion," Sanford said.
Of course, quite understandable. Who isn't surprised by the reaction from family, friends, co-workers and in this case, most of the state and country, when we just decide to disappear internationally without telling anyone. It's ridiculous!

Those aspirations for president, they are just looking more and more feasible all the time. Can you imagine if he actually ran and what sort of ads the opposition would throw up demonstrating why he isn't suitable (to say the least) for the presidency.

But wait, folks, he is going to have a televised news conference in an hour or so.

The best part about this was yesterday when Steven Colbert declared himself governor of South Carolina and issued a decree that all dogs must walk on their hind legs.

Hee.

In any case, Sanford is having his news conference at 2:00 PM EST to explain his nuttiness. I am sure it will be on some, if not all, of the major news networks.

I'll try to find the transcript as soon as it's up, but he's going on and on about forgiveness. I just bet he is going to drop some big bombshell. He is talking about "God's Laws"! Sin, etc.

EDIT:

Yep, "I have been unfaithful to my wife" with a "dear, dear friend" from Argentina. Sounds like an actual female, too!

Well there you go. Family values again.
They say, "the tree of liberty must be watered with the blood of tyrants and patriots." I suppose it never occurred to them that they are the tyrants, not the patriots. Those weapons are not being used to fight some kind of tyranny; they are bringing them to an event where people are getting together to talk. -Mike Wong

But as far as board culture in general, I do think that young male overaggression is a contributing factor to the general atmosphere of hostility. It's not SOS and the Mess throwing hand grenades all over the forum- Red

He's tendering his resignation as chairman from the Republican Governor's Association.

Presidential ambitions: rapidly headed down the drain.

LOTS of religious talk. And "Ya' alls." People talk like that, for real?

Update:

Yep, it was an affair with a woman (with two kids of her own.)
