Didn't Reese say something about the Terminators being designed to instill fear?

In T1? No, he says that killing is all they do and that it'll find her and pull her fucking heart out, or something.

I love how the T-800 from the original film could kill humans with a single swing of it's arm (the gang at the start, Kyle Reese) but the hapless T-800 in T4 couldn't even scratch Connor even after multiple hits. Bollocks.

Re: Terminator Salvation
This is one of the things I absolutely hate about how action movies are shifting towards PG-13. All of the violence is losing its impact. Might as well let Connor go around with wire-fu if we can't show realistic consequences of getting smacked by a metal object with lethal force.Vympel wrote:I love how the T-800 from the original film could kill humans with a single swing of it's arm (the gang at the start, Kyle Reese) but the hapless T-800 in T4 couldn't even scratch Connor even after multiple hits. Which is why you would think he'd dispatch him quickly: the man isn't a target, so why waste time tossing him about when he can just ram his fist through him?Darth Wong wrote:Mind you, that guy was not the target and had nothing the Terminator wanted. Re: Terminator Salvation
Perhaps the T-800 in T1 had it's threat response triggered by the punks drawing knives on him at the start? They might not scratch him, but they ARE more of a threat, especially if he has a cover to maintain. Under normal circumstances, they might only kill when needed. Again, to maintain cover.
Hell, even the T-1000 took the time to wag it's finger at Sarah at the end of T2. These bots have SOME personality
That doesn't make the movie make much more sense, but there could be rationalization for Termie inefficiency.

I would go with personality myself, rather then ineffiency. Kyle Reese got killed because of the unhealthily close proximity he had to the pipe bomb he shoved up the T-800's arse.Vympel wrote:I love how the T-800 from the original film could kill humans with a single swing of it's arm (the gang at the start, Kyle Reese) but the hapless T-800 in T4 couldn't even scratch Connor even after multiple hits. My memory of the movie is fuzzy, but I was positive the T-800 killed Reese prior to the explosion of the pipe bomb, but smashing Reese's head (IIRC cracking his neck or otherwise fucking him up).Kyle Reese got killed because of the unhealthily close proximity he had to the pipe bomb he shoved up the T-800's arse.

Re: Terminator Salvation
Yeah, pisses me off. In any event it's so clear that you don't need a PG-13 rating for a movie to be successful - look at Watchmen - here's a movie based off a graphic novel that's not mainstream, that has no big name actors, and had extreme violence and gore - and what's more, is quite long - and it made almost $200 million at the box office and the moment the DVDs and Blu-Rays come out they're going to make even more. This is one of the things I absolutely hate about how action movies are shifting towards PG-13. All of the violence is losing its impact. Might as well let Connor go around with wire-fu if we can't show realistic consequences of getting smacked by a metal object with lethal force.
If a niche-as-fuck movie like that can make hundreds of millions, a more realistically violent Terminator film could make fuckloads.
(I loved Watchmen. Saw it three times, twice regular cinema, once in IMAX. It's one of those love/hate movies though- you either love it or despise it, I find).

Re: Terminator Salvation
Kyle Reese got bitchslapped by the T-800 and then the Terminator went on to go after Sarah Connor. Then Kyle was able to crawl up and shove a pipebomb in and roll down the stairs as the Terminator reached for its hip, and then it blew up.Vympel wrote:My memory of the movie is fuzzy, but I was positive the T-800 killed Reese prior to the explosion of the pipe bomb, but smashing Reese's head (IIRC cracking his neck or otherwise fucking him up).Kyle Reese got killed because of the unhealthily close proximity he had to the pipe bomb he shoved up the T-800's arse.
After the blast, Sarah crawled to Reese but the guy was dead.

Re: Terminator Salvation
It could also be that the Terminator didn't perceive him a great enough threat to care and he was simply being a nuisance for repeatedly attempting to attack him.AMT wrote:Which is why you would think he'd dispatch him quickly: the man isn't a target, so why waste time tossing him about when he can just ram his fist through him?
Actually, my brother made an interesting observation and theory on the T-1000's personality. Where the T-800 was more or less robotic in the way it carried itself and only appeared human, the T-1000 was capable of emulating human emotion, smiles and other mannerisms that made its disguise far more convincing. It's entirely possible that the T-1000's internal programming included an extensive human emotion emulator and such programming manifested itself in some circumstances where it wasn't intended to. It explains why in some instances the T-1000 showed some frustration/anger or why it was decidedly playful with its targets (ie. taking its sweet time walking up to them or wagging his finger).Hell, even the T-1000 took the time to wag it's finger at Sarah at the end of T2. Re: Terminator Salvation
Maybe, but like I said before, if it was a nuisance that slowed him down, why waste more time throwing him around when a possible priority target is near? One would think that, since he had the capability, he would take him out since he's slowing him down, even if for a few seconds.

Re: Terminator Salvation
The Terminator does have a history of throwing people around as a melee choice of action. The punk who's heart he pulled out did stab the T-800, while it threw the others around. Recall in T2, the guy who hit the T-800 with the pool stick was thrown out the window similar to the way Ginger's boyfriend who hit the T-800 with a lamp was eventually thrown through the door. The gang members in the bar fight in T2 who compromised the T-800's skin (via cigar and knife) had bones deliberately broken.AMT wrote:Maybe, but like I said before, if it was a nuisance that slowed him down, why waste more time throwing him around when a possible priority target is near?
