... that isn't what Duchess is complaining about. She is... you know, bisexual.

She's also transitioning from male to female, which is what I assumed her post was about. Seeing as being bi won't actually disqualify you from service, their not allowed to ask anymore. Only if she flagrantly advertises the fact.Samuel wrote:... that isn't what Duchess is complaining about. She is... you know, bisexual.

I've more often heard them referred to as SS Runes myself.Sidewinder wrote: A stylized "S" that looks like a thunderbolt? It's more common than you think. See the logo for Kiss. Note the vocalist (Gene Simmons) was born in Israel, and that his mother is a Holocaust survivor. I doubt he intentionally used Nazi symbolism when he formed the band.
The only war film I can recall that had extensive use of SS uniforms and insignia was Where Eagles Dare where there were a few Wehrmacht and Alpenkorps uniforms as well as an instance of Luftwaffe. The largest number of officers uniforms in that film were of SS pattern. As Lonestar noted, the Swastika is what's present in every WWII movie with Nazis, most of which have the heroes facing the German Army instead of the SS or Waffen-SS.

Well, it does directly limit my choice in partners so Samuel is semi-correct, but you're also correct, since that's actually two strikes against me. However once the procedures are completed the simple fact is that--your hormones afterwards are essentially no different except in chemical composition from synthroid, a synthetic thyroid hormone which you can serve while being prescribed, even though not being on that ultimately weakens and kills you over a period of months to a year, whereas loss of estradiol post-op does nothing except some unpleasantries. My objection is around the fact that once you've already been fully treated, you actually are more liable than average to meet the physical requirements, as women go. But I'm 100% certain that even when DADT goes, that rule will remain and continue to be exclusionary, since it's under a different section and less well known. Basically anyone who's had reconstructive surgery on their genitalia can't serve, and in an associated and deeply offensive category anyone with a "history of tranvestitism" is banned on grounds of moral turpitude, which is especially ridiculous and offensive to have applied to transwomen. Chromosomal differences are also grounds for exclusion from the service--people with Klinefelter's syndrome, who might be perfectly normal men or at worst sterile, will be removed from the US military when it's found out (that's XXY), though it's interesting to note that the percentage of transexuals among Klinefelter's-type XXYs is noticeably higher than XY, as an aside. I would under current procedures run afoul of basically every single one of those regulations, or will, including DADT.Cpl Kendall wrote:She's also transitioning from male to female, which is what I assumed her post was about. I had thought of this before, forgot and then remembered but I had thought as well that if you were in the pre-op phase that they might reject you because after you join and then move to the surgery and recovery stage then they lose a troopie for however long it might take. The Duchess of Zeon wrote:Well, it does directly limit my choice in partners so Samuel is semi-correct, but you're also correct, since that's actually two strikes against me. A comment on the SS in the KISS logo looking like the SS bolts (a term I must admit I hadn't heard before reading this thread, either)-they're part of a WORD, in this case, the band name. I can't recall a single incident of that particular graphical depiction of the double letter SS by itself, WITHOUT the Nazi connection.
And I wouldn't exactly call it showing up in the band logo of a band that was infamous for being actively scandalous 'common', either.

'Hey, we both have a Martian's phone number on our speed dial. I think I deserve the benefit of the doubt.'
'You know, for a guy with like 50 different kinds of vision, you sure are blind.'

Huh...well, it's odd, but I can sort of understand how an American could not encounter the SS insignia.

It suddenly struck me that that tiny pea, pretty and blue, was the Earth. I put up my thumb and shut one eye, and my thumb blotted out the planet Earth. I didn't feel like a giant. I felt very, very small.
