Pulling sound files from youtube.
Ok, so right off the bat, if attempting to do this is violating something, or going against copyrights or something, let me know.. Because I don't want to download videos here from youtube...all I want is the AUDIO. someone told me there was a program that would actually do this, but Ive yet to find it... Anyone have any ideas.?

Re: Pulling sound files from youtube.
Almost certain it's still a copyright violation, even if you're simply taking the audio from an audio/video file.

If you can't be bothered with new software: Get or make a male-to-male stereo audio cable. String it from your speaker jack to your microphone jack. Open the sound recording software of your choice and record. Trim the ends of the recording, save in a format your player can use and at an appropriate resolution, and name the file.

See. . .it generally helps to specify what OS you want these programs for if you're asking these kind of things first. http://www.rogueamoeba.com/audiohijack/Crossroads Inc. wrote:Need one for the mac os, though i think i found anther version, I downloaded "RecordPad sound recorder... now I just have to see if it can record off youtube.

No more than recording audio from a radio broadcast would be.andrewgpaul wrote:Almost certain it's still a copyright violation, even if you're simply taking the audio from an audio/video file.

Re: Pulling sound files from youtube.
Why would it be? If it is on Youtube legally, people are already downloading it as many times as they want.andrewgpaul wrote:Almost certain it's still a copyright violation, even if you're simply taking the audio from an audio/video file.
Re: Pulling sound files from youtube.
Like all filesharing, there's going to be some copyright violations. But if you're just downloading the audio of, say, some kids jumping off a roof for whatever reason, that would probably be legal.Feil wrote:Why would it be? Re: Pulling sound files from youtube.
What file-sharing? If all you're doing is ripping a stream to your hard drive it's no different than recording a TV show through VHS. The idea that there's infringements from recording audio off Youtube is absurd.Qwerty 42 wrote: Like all filesharing, there's going to be some copyright violations. Re: Pulling sound files from youtube.
There would be infringement if it were copyrighted audio: this is why WMG has locked a number of Yes songs, for instance.General Zod wrote:What file-sharing? Re: Pulling sound files from youtube.
There's numerous copyrighted songs on youtube. The only reason the audio would be locked out is if the creators hadn't given permission to have them uploaded, so there's still no more infringement than if someone had recorded it off a radio or TV.Qwerty 42 wrote: There would be infringement if it were copyrighted audio: this is why WMG has locked a number of Yes songs, for instance.

How is the law presently written? I had been under the impression that even the inadvertent download of material the originator had not been authorized to broadcast was illegal. That's the RIAA's stance, at least, although that doesn't mean much, necessarily, in terms of legality.

Re: Pulling sound files from youtube.
Does it really matter anyway? Crossroads didn't say dick about what he wanted to record. Idiots just jumped the gun and assumed it must be illegal. As long as the creator gave permission to upload it onto sites like youtube then I don't see why the law would treat this any differently from recording off a VCR.Qwerty 42 wrote:How is the law presently written? I never assumed it was illegal, I cautioned him to be careful about which content to download, in case some of it was.General Zod wrote:Does it really matter anyway? Re: Pulling sound files from youtube.
You don't even have to bother with the cable - just open up the volume mixer in your computer, and set the recording mode to Stereo Mix. At that point, the software will track whatever your sound card outputs.Feil wrote:If you can't be bothered with new software: Get or make a male-to-male stereo audio cable. A good piece of software to use would be Audacity, it's clean and of very good quality.

Re: Pulling sound files from youtube.
After incorrectly identifying Youtube as a file-sharing site; which, you know, it isn't. The onus of any copyrighted content would be on youtube and the uploader, not the person who watched the stream.Qwerty 42 wrote:I never assumed it was illegal, I cautioned him to be careful about which content to download, in case some of it was.General Zod wrote:Does it really matter anyway? I used the incorrect word, for which i apologize. After incorrectly identifying Youtube as a file-sharing site; which, you know, it isn't.
Which was my question, thank you.The onus of any copyrighted content would be on youtube and the uploader, not the person who watched the stream.

Re: Pulling sound files from youtube.
Simply go to the youtube video you want to rip the audio from, and then insert "listento" between the "www." and "youtube" and then press enter. Or alternatively go to http://listentoyoutube.com/ and paste the url of the video you want.Crossroads Inc. wrote:Ok, so right off the bat, if attempting to do this is violating something, or going against copyrights or something, let me know.. No need to install anything, so it's pretty much as simple as it can get.
Re: Pulling sound files from youtube.
There's an online converter that can do this too, at this site.

It's funny; PCWorld actually had this exact topic covered recently. Video2Mp3 is precisely what you're looking for. And it's nice because you don't have to sign up or anything, just toss it a YouTube addy and it will spit out an Mp3 to download.

Type in "kick" in-between the www. and youtube.com. Have fun.

Maybe I'm a little late, but I have to second the reccomendation for Audacity. It's a very nice program that lets you snag soundstreams from many sources and do all kinds of neat things to them. Combine it with SoundForge and you should have all the audio tools the average person needs.
