Re: Chicago [56K Die!]
VERY nice job on the Chicago skyline and the skyscrapers.
You also captured some very nice architectural details and some of the not so obvious details.
Glad you had a good time in the big city. I see that you checked out the museums, too.

Thanks .Broomstick wrote:VERY nice job on the Chicago skyline and the skyscrapers.
There was a great view from the John Hancock center (I wanted to game the system by using the lounge, but as an under 21 that didn't work out). Great lake views from there .
Manhatten still has a better skyline though.
ThanksYou also captured some very nice architectural details and some of the not so obvious details.
I visited a TON of museums in every city I visited in the USA. In Chicago I went to the Fields museum, science and industry museum and a few more. Great museums!Glad you had a good time in the big city. I see that you checked out the museums, too.

Of course, where do you think the Dogs, tiger, rabbit came from? (Also Rhinos, more tigers, lions, but those pictures failed my veto process )Isolder74 wrote:did you go to the Lincoln Park Zoo?

Re: Chicago [56K Die!]
That would be Brookfield Zoo. It is reachable by public transportation, but the routes are less well known and don't run nearly as often as the ones to Lincoln Park. The two zoos also tend to specialize slightly, so there isn't as much duplication as you might otherwise expect between the two.Isolder74 wrote:There is another zoo to the west so I couldn't be sure.DEATH wrote:Of course, where do you think the Dogs, tiger, rabbit came from? Another difference is that Lincoln Park Zoo is free to the public whereas Brookfield charges an entrance fee.

Yeah, it was definitely Lincoln zoo. (I only paid once for a zoo, in NY, out of the 3 I visited )Broomstick wrote: Another difference is that Lincoln Park Zoo is free to the public whereas Brookfield charges an entrance fee.

Re: Chicago [56K Die!]
I lived in Chicago for a while so I've been to both. When it comes to visiting a city it is good to have inside information you can see things that some people don't know about. There are people I've talked to that went to the Science and Industry and when I asked they didn't know about the U-505 .

Re: Chicago [56K Die!]
Even more impressive is that the U-505 is a genuine trophy of war - we captured the damn thing during WWII.
If you're ever in the Detroit area check out the Henry Ford Museum and Greenfield Village - it's a wiki but it gives a decent, quick oversite. I think you'd love them both.

Sorry, but my reaction to the idea of going through Detroit was "Er, why? Isn't it a burnt out poor hellhole?".Broomstick wrote:Even more impressive is that the U-505 is a genuine trophy of war - we captured the damn thing during WWII.

Re: Chicago [56K Die!]
Detroit AREA - the Henry Ford is actually in DEARBORN, Michigan, which is a nice suburb. The Henry Ford is actually impressive enough (I think) to warrant a trip to it just for that purpose. You don't stay in Detroit itself, you stay in the suburbs around it.
Other attractions in the area include the Detroit Zoo (which is NOT actually in Detroit) and the Detroit Institute of Arts, which includes, among other things, an especially commissioned mural by Diego Rivera. Unfortunately, the DIA really is in Detroit. I would recommend taking a cab there rather than trying to drive yourself so you can be dropped off at the door. Contrary to rumor, there are some things worth seeing in the greater metropolitan Detroit area. Just a thought, in case you get bored with more typical tourist cities.

Taxis? Car/suburbs? No Public transportation? Doesn't work for someone on my budget, I stayed in Harlem in NY and the North-West in Washington DC .Broomstick wrote:Detroit AREA - the Henry Ford is actually in DEARBORN, Michigan, which is a nice suburb. I really regret not being able to get to Yosemite park again, but without a car...

That's what I thought about it. Before I lived there, being a history buff, I already knew about the sub. The story of the sub was really cool.Broomstick wrote:Even more impressive is that the U-505 is a genuine trophy of war - we captured the damn thing during WWII.
When I was there is was still outside and you could see it next to the building. At that time if you didn't get to the museum before 2:00 they wouldn't let you tour the sub. The exhibit was closed. You could only look at the miniatures etc. That was a real let down they might as well have just closed off that part completely.
I missed seeing Sue at the Field Museum as it hadn't been even dug up yet.
