Top 5 technologies to use against the Empire
What top 5 technologies seen in ST movies and shows would even the fight against the Empire the most (genesis bombs, transwarp etc)?
Never mind if it is 'lost' tech or not.

Some combo of Phase cloak.
I suppose the uber torps(Tilitium, Genesis) would also be nice.

Several things are needed to fight the empire.
Mobility: This one can be done with a variety of technologies. The Transwarp hubs used by the Borg are nice, but they are suseptible to destruction. The speed at which Slipstream moved Voyager when it malfunctioned is ideal. That is roughly comparable to SW hyper drives. This would give the Federation (or other comparable powers) the speed to hit the Empire. Furthermore manuevers in flight are capable and FTL near stellar objects (stars, planets, etc...) seems to be little in the way of a problem.
Weapons of Mass Destruction: These weapons can actually be used in a way to prevent war with the Empire rather then assist in a war. Similar to how the nuclear aresnals between the USA and USSR prevented war, the same could be said this way. If the Federation had Protomatter weapons or Trilithium torpedoes, that could be used to discourage war with the Empire. If the Empire were to begin a war with the Federation (A war they still would loose) the Federation can ensure that the Empire gets hurt, and hurt bad. With Slipstream drives and every Fed ship armed with Trilithium torpedoes, the Empire could have several thousand of its most important stars destroyed. Most of the Empires important resources and assets are near such stars. This would level the playing field, so to speak. The Empire would be leery of war with the Federation and the Federation would have no wish to start a war with the Empire.
Industry: The Federation might be bested in several areas by the Empire, but the largest and most obvious difference is industry. The Federation needs to kick its industry into high gear. Tapping the power source of stars the Federation could use industrial replicators to such a degree that they could possibly set up mass producing factories for just about anything. Furthermore with an improved industry more resources can be put on things such as fleet sizes, terraforming, and even technology development. With an improved Industry, other technologies in the Federation could likely advance at a higher rate and be built quicker.
Durability: The Federation would need to vastly inrease the strength of their ships and the damage they could sustain. This would include shield increases, armor increases, and other changes that would allow greater acceleration as well.
Firepower: This one is needed along with the durability. The Federation would need weapons that could damage their new durability, but furthermore they need weapons that could damage the Imperial ships (skirmishes are likely to happen even if war does not). Long-range high-power high-speed missile/torpedo systems would be an excelent weapon for use against Imperial ships.

Slipstream is the best bet. Technology currently available can be modified to support it and it is at most a decade away from beginning practical and safe application.Alyeska wrote:Several things are needed to fight the empire.

I disagree gravity fields would have the best affect on slipstream vessels, as Voyager nearly fell apart in slipstream, intense sudden gravity fields might stress a fragile balance that appears to exist in slipstream.
The power use is actually manageable, where as transwarp appears beyond current Federation technology.
Genesis might not hurt the Empire, as it appears to use local time dilation and bizarre matter alteration fields to work. Shields might block this, and it is possible that shielded planets might be able to avoid being disrupted.Weapons of Mass Destruction: These weapons can actually be used in a way to prevent war with the Empire rather then assist in a war. Trilithium weapons have the problem of needing to reach the star. Beyond the gravity well being able to possibly destroy or force a slipstreamed vessel out of slipstream, automated weapons systems could destroy the ship, and I could see defense nets of grav well projectors and TL emplacements around a star to prevent the warping missile from successfully reaching the star.
Industry: The Federation might be bested in several areas by the Empire, but the largest and most obvious difference is industry. The Federation needs to kick its industry into high gear.
Definitely.
Whole stars do not produce enough power to ramp up Federation production a lot. Federation power use probably approaches several stars anyway. You underestimate the power demands of Sci-Fi civilizations.Tapping the power source of stars the Federation could use industrial replicators to such a degree that they could possibly set up mass producing factories for just about anything.
Scrap communism and retarded economy for man's benefit bullshit.Furthermore with an improved industry more resources can be put on things such as fleet sizes, terraforming, and even technology development. With an improved Industry, other technologies in the Federation could likely advance at a higher rate and be built quicker.
Conquer the Romulans and Klingons and put their resources to work for starters. Then conquer the Cardassians, the Ferengi, and the Breen and such.
They NEED hypermatter technology. Which I don't see them magically developping.
At least they need a lot of Borg technology.
This is difficult.Durability: The Federation would need to vastly inrease the strength of their ships and the damage they could sustain. This would include shield increases, armor increases, and other changes that would allow greater acceleration as well.
The Federation simply does not have the materials science and shield technology to resist Imperial fire and build like the Empire.
Get Borg stuff and develop up it as much as possible is the first to start.
Like I said, take Borg stuff and do the best they can do. But they simple don't have the tech in this field yet.Firepower: This one is needed along with the durability. The Federation would need weapons that could damage their new durability, but furthermore they need weapons that could damage the Imperial ships (skirmishes are likely to happen even if war does not). Do they need hubs to create transwarp conducts?Alyeska wrote:The Transwarp hubs used by the Borg are nice, but they are suseptible to destruction.
In TNG: Descent the Entreprise-D entered a Borg transwarp conduct and moved at twenty times faster than maximum warp. However, they could not change course.
In VOY: Dark Frontier the Delta Flyer was traveling inside a conduct, but could change course while inside. The only difference from Descent was that the Flyer carried a 'transwarp coil'.
Could it be possible that a ship with a transwarp coil is actually creating the conduct as it goes? That would mean that the hubs are just an intersection layout.

There appear to be two types of Transwarp. You have standard Transwarp which uses Transwarp coils. This is significantly faster then standard Warp. It can get you from Borg space to Earth in around 2 years. But that is still slow. Transwarp hubs don't require coils. That is why Voyager was able to use the hub. Furthermore the transwarp hubs provide much faster travel (superior to SW Hyperdrive).Crazy Ivan wrote:Do they need hubs to create transwarp conducts?Alyeska wrote:The Transwarp hubs used by the Borg are nice, but they are suseptible to destruction.

Aleska, I agree on everything except the need for increased durability. There is no way the feds can build starships capable of surviving a single heavy shot in any reasonable time frame, so why bother? Use the resources on something else. I would build ships with virtually no defenses, but the biggest, most insane weapons the feds can build. Make them automated, or nearly so, attack in packs hoping to overwhelm isolated ships before shot out of the sky.

Just my two cents as a new guy...
Mobility: According to the ST TNG: TM the Ent-D has an acceleration of up to 10,000 m/sec². This is not poor or great compared to what we see SW vessels doing in the movies, so relatively even as is when dealing with sublight. At FTL, the Federation can alter course while in warp, but their warp is much slower. Their only attempts at transwarp failed.
WMD: For the Federation to use such would be to ignore the very foundation of the entire organization. It would take the Empire destroying a world, etc., which would force their hand. The only thing the Federation could do would be to attack systems the Empire would be using as staging areas, since warp is hopeless as to try moving from the Milky Way to the SW galaxy.
Industry: Even with industrial replicators, the Federation's 150 worlds could not match the millions of worlds of the Empire when it comes to industrial capacity. Coruscant alone has enough industry for several worlds.
Durability: The Federation would have to build an entirely new class of ship with many times more shiled generators in place along with much thicker hulls to even attempt to compare, but it would still be a losing battle. Like the Israelis do with tanks, the UFP would be better off designing ships to last as long as possible but allowing people to escape to fight another day.
Firepower: The Federation's phasers are only 4.8-5.1 MW for the top of the line, but they do a lot of damage to physical matter as long as it is not too dense. Photon torpedoes can also be good weapons against hulls, but against shileds they are lacking. The one hope would be to use cloaking devices to get the first hits in during most battles and then run. This would only work until CGT sensors came into use to counter such attack tactics.
Conclusions: The Federation's starships have fairly equal sublight speeds, but that's it. When it comes to industry, durability and weaponry, the Empire wins out on all counts. The Federation, Klingons, Romulans, Cardassians, Breen, etc., etc., could all band together and still not be able to match the millions of worlds of the Empire. The Star Trek races cannot even reach the Empire's main holdings, so that is a moot point. Empire wins out.

Hey, Private!
I hate to tell you this, but this is so blatantly obvious, that no one is impresed anymore when you say that. Instead, they'll flame you for wasting their time.
Plus it is a red herring to the thread topic. The idea of this thread is to suggest techs that the Federation doesn't mass employ now, but may do so to give themselves more of a chance, or at least a chance of say sinking one Star Destroyer, or just hurting the Empire a little before they get wiped out...

1: Phase Cloaked Cardie Dreadnaut
This weapon phase cloaked could be used to attack the Empire Assests but the Speed advantage of Hyperdrives would mean that the damage would be done after the Empire has already conquered the Star Trek Galaxy but you can have the joy of blowing up the Kuat Drive Yards.
2: Sub-Space Transporters
Use these to beam massive mines into the paths of Imperial ships. They could also be used to beam them into the Engine rooms of Enemy shhip cripling them.

1) Working Slipstream Drive. If impossible or impractical; use transwarp (coil-type).
2) Ablative Armor (better than any other ST armor I know of).
3) Genesis Bomb (may not be able to hurt a shielded planet, but could still play hell with unshielded ones).

Largely agreed here, though I think the transwarp coils also provide for nice bursts of speed. They won't allow you to traverse part of the galaxy in minutes a'la the Hub, but they can cover ~5 ly in roughly 60 seconds (the 15 cubes' approach in "Scorpion I"), and can presumably go 10-20,000 ly in a matter of days or so (as VGR did near the end of "Dark Frontier").Alyeska wrote:There appear to be two types of Transwarp. Single coils don't seem to be designed for travelling those sorts of distances over a period of days or weeks, though, since the one VGR had burned out after she and the Delta Flyer had used it extensively.

Interesting theory.
I suppose the Federation could install "Phase Cloak" into its "suicide" ships. If a Phase Cloak is engaged, then it wouldn't matter if they warped right through a planet, since they're out of normal space.
The suiciders could warp right through a system, then pop up next to the star, then unphase, and shoot the trilithum torpedo. The scenario would be like the Japanese in WW2. They DID inflict some casaulties and sunk several considerable USA warships.
One other scenario.... Kremin Time-Ship. The Kremin can warp all the way back to when Coruscant was a primitive civilization, wipe it out with "Temporal Wave" and re-write the whole Star Wars history. The the Kremin ship goes to the next major civilization, such as Corellia, Alderaan, Nal Hutta, and so forth. Then the whole SW universe will possibly lose a lot of its strength and virtually all of its "canon" history.
I don't know if Star Wars universe has demostrated any time travel capabilities to counter the Kremin ship.
