Tales of Monkey Island - Episode 1: LotSN

Post by tezunegari »

I got the demo. I played it to the end. And now I am tired and want to go to bed.

My oppinion (directly after finishing):
While the game fails to achieve the same feeling of funny absurdity of the first three games it is quite entertaining.
The puzzles (at least in the demo) are simple and easily solved once you have taken a good look at the interactive items.
  • The good
  • the typical Monkey Island humor ("Now we are all going to die... again.")
  • the graphics, while a bit unusual at first, are well made
  • Necromancy (or a voodoo ritual gone wrong)... Guybrush left hand is turned into an undead... limb
  • Necromancy (or a voodoo ritual gone really wrong)... if you ever wanted to see LeChuck with warm blood and a heart beat
  • The bad
  • the controls are only partially based on the first three games. Moving around requires the arrow keys, like in that MI game which name I shall not utter here. Though, you can still walk around by clicking on interactive items on the screen (why no "move where I click, or I will keelhaul you" is beyond me)
  • the Inventory is hidden and can only be accessed by moving the mouse cursor to the right side of the screen which will display a trunk like tab. (I would prefer the Inventory to open with a right-mouse button click but that's just me)
  • there is no right-click menu
  • Elaines voice lacks the utter loving disgust of all undead beings and certain Pirates of the first three games (but being married to G.Threepwood might do that to you)
Now I did like to play a NEW Monkey Island game again but somehow I fear for the episode factor.
Sam & Max suffered from barely changing places leading to heavy repetetive game play and in my oppinion quite short play-through time.

If the episodes are comparable in length to the Sam & Max episodes I will most likely wait until the Season is finished and get it as a budget title.

The controls used follow the Grim Fandango style of game play.

Gameplay wise, I finished it in one night, after 3-4hrs of playing. Albeit, I went looking around for hints for the last few puzzles because I was getting impatient.

Interesting mix of characters, and there's a good chance the game will end in the first island Guybrush got land locked for a while.

Buttt... Guybrush is definitely heading elsewhere for Chapter 2. So, I don't think I would be all too worried about the lack of environments.

I pre-ordered the game ad finished it about 20 minutes ago with some decent puzzles most of which were quite logical. Some were problematic due to my mind switching into stupid mode, the second map it insisting on reading from the wishing well despite it being in the middle of the route. All in all I enjoyed it and await the second chapter with glee.
the controls are only partially based on the first three games. Moving around requires the arrow keys, like in that MI game which name I shall not utter here. Though, you can still walk around by clicking on interactive items on the screen (why no "move where I click, or I will keelhaul you" is beyond me)
Hold down the left mouse button then drag in the direction you want. A compass will appear around Guybrush with an arrow pointing in the direction your going. Also if you hold down the right button while moving you will run.
Now I did like to play a NEW Monkey Island game again but somehow I fear for the episode factor.
The original games were split into episodes anyway's so I don't see this as affecting it really.

Hearing about Monkey Island made me reinstall MI3 again. Sadly it only worked for a short time untill the sound got messed up;

So I tried the demo and it looks interesting enough to consider a buy. I did find the controls/camera views rather annying though. What's wrong with the simple point & click system from MI3?

Bought the whole thing all at once. Just finished the first episode.
So far I'm pleased, it wasn't gut wrenching hilarity but the humor was there and I enjoyed the puzzless. I do have to say for a veteran monkey island player some of them were a bit too easy.
I'm anxiously waiting for more.
