He was looking at a picture of Joseph Hazelwood, who was the captain of the Exxon Valdez when it hit the reef. In fact, the bottom of the article has a picture of the scene you're talking about, where there is no landmark in the picture.

Yeah, like I said, it's been years since I watched the movie. I must not have picked up the "centuries" bit in the line either, as I remember the scene giving me the impression the Smoker leader had known the man personally. Do the comics count for anything? According to the first one there is a small group of super advanced people who created Costner's character and probably the weirdest of the mutants. Also there is at least one other big smoker clan using an air craft carrier and their leader is a huge fat man that lived in a bathtub.
