Would this be any sort of improvement over a regular howitzer?
I think burst rate can already deal off 3 or so shells in a few seconds, never mind the Koalition SV that launches two shells in a single salvo by virtue of its twin barrels.
Yeah, actually, on second thought, it appears that the Pzh2000 can fire a burst of three shells over a period of ten seconds or so. There doesn't seem to be much point in making something that can fire them faster than that--unless its fully automatic or something and that's the cyclic rate of fire... :D

On an unrelated note, I'm going to try to make that large world map by editing each continent individually and then stitching it all together later, since you can't really see the ocean floor in those renderings anyway.

Bluewolf wrote:Actually Lonestar, I am not out of my mind, more than I am a bit unaware about how certain types of things cost relative to each other. I admit that I had to quickly learn a bit of military formation, types of unit etc in this RP so my knowledge is quite limited, though I am learning. Thats why I made such an insane order. I had no idea (stupidly) that ordering 10 SSGN's may cost a lot and a continue to cost a lot to maintain, never mind logistics, training, arming them etc. Its part of the reason I may make some insane purchases, heh.

So in light I am just going to be reasonable, 4 SSGN's Seige, (2 from the previous order, 2 as in a new one). I am really for sorry dicking you about like this, even more so after the PM stuff last night. To you other guys, is that sane or is it still oo much do you think?
Couple quick rules of thumb for military aquistions:

1) Figure you aren't going to spend more than 10% of your annual GDP on defense (by example the US spends about 4.5% of its GDP), of that at least 2/3rds would be maintenance and 1/3rd aquistions.
2) Aquisitions includes R&D so carve a third or so off of your available aqusition budget
3) Figure another third of that budget is going for long-lead or other basic items that we never bother to figure out but everybody needs (you have to buy trucks, missiles, ammo, etc)
4) The leftover amount (call it 1/3 of 1/3 of 1/10th of your GDP or 1/90th for ease of reference) is what you've got handy to buy shit.
5) Grab a wiki/fas/defenselink pricetag for a equal generation piece of equipment to what you are looking for
6) Jack the price up 10% if its outside of your domestic capabilities (large nations can probably produce multiple 5th gen pieces but smaller nations maybe only 1 or 2. Take Ryan as a for instance where he has a well developed fixed wing aviation industry but little expertise in ground equipment, transports, helos, etc)
7) Jack the price another 20% if you are ordering in small quantities (<6 for ships, <50 for aviation, <100 for ground vehicles would be a ROUGH, VERY ROUGH, tipping point)
8) Ignore #6 if your supplier is an allied nation willing to take the hit themselves (note the supplying nation should remember to figure this out on their own).
9) For every thing you buy take 25% of its cost out of your available aquisition budget for the next year UNLESS you scrap/mothball/decom existing assets then only take 10% out.

Now that would be MY, and emphasis on MY, suggestion for figuring things out. So for a GDP of $405Bn this would give you roughly 4.5Bn at the most to spend on new toys with subtractions following any expenditure.

I'd say go through with at least parts of the order. The complex thing to do would be, if you really want to, amke a post about internal political divisions that sabotage the funding which leads to cancellation. The easier thing is to just OOC things down to a level that fits with your ability to pay. This is the reason why back when I was offering Ticos and Burkes for 250-300 I made my argument on cost. Anyway go through with what you've committed to and either pare it down in OOC or go through the trouble of posting IC.

The thing of course is if you have questions ask them because between all the guys who certainly know things in this game somebody should have a viable answer. Moreover asking in OOC precludes others acting IC so you're covered as well.

In general, new SP artillery utilize autoloading. I recall seeing a schematic of the autoloader somewhere for the Koalition SV some time back.

Although if the date conversion thing Wilkens posted is remotely accurate, July 4th has come and gone. We're in September now. I suppose it could be some retroactive thing just for the heck of it though. Or invocation of the dreaded Unreal Time.

You questioning my mad excel skills :D ? Anyway the conversion is accurate based on the start date of Aug 15th 2008 real time as Jan 1st 2008 Game Time with the slowdown taking place as of May 15th 2009. So right now (and I based it on GMT) its just about September 11th 2017.

Frankly I've never really kept track myself. If July 4 has come and gone already, then naturally my post's an unreal time affair.

Well, good. Keep in mind that Langley is also seeking to upgrade and expand its civilian nuclear power infrastructure; both the civilian and military projects could probably be tied together with ease.

Byzantium would also offer nuclear technology. We continue heavy investment and research in next generation nuclear plants, and aim to begin replacement of many existing plants from 2018-2020.

Would it be possible to implement a recoil-handling mechanism like the one used for the TDI Kriss gun in a bullpup-configuration assault rifle?

Would Miratian 8x55mm still be too powerful for controllable automatic fire in such a system?

8x55mm Miratian is a nigh-unmanagable size of round for any weapon smaller than a medium machinegun, so you're never really going to have controllable automatic fire without the weapon being dug in on a bipod or tripod. Freestanding automatic rifle fire is right out. Your best bet is probably to try using a downscaled version of the box-spring mechanism on the Barrett M82 (the lighter bullpup XM500 variant is perhaps more relevant) to make a semiautomatic battle rifle firing your 8x55mm rounds from a magazine in the 20-30 round neighborhood.

The downside, as you're probably despairing about right this moment, is that you will not be able to lay down automatic suppressing fire with it. This is true, and you will have to live with it, but you will get the benefit of a weapon that allows accurate semi-automatic fire by your riflemen without potentially killing them from wild jerking about while firing full auto. Your best option is to have your semiauto infantry rifles and a pair (or trio, if that's how you roll) of 8x55mm LMGs in each squad, with an LMG providing the automatic suppressing fire for each section/fireteam while the riflemen lay down the accurate fire, allowing you to have the best of both worlds. You'll use less ammo, too. ;)

EDIT: Anybody have a copy of the most recent game map? The one in the map thread is out of date (~2009ish) and the link to the update I did is broken.
