Official SGU Website Goes Online

Post by JME2 »

The official website for Stargate Universe has gone online, giving us a much more in depth look at what to expect from the third SG series. The insight into the characters is interesting, but so is first true look at the Destiny's interior and Gateroom.

It's nice to see that while certain Ancient design aesthetics are present, the Destiny looks far less futuristic and sleek than Atlantis or the Aurora-class ships (understandable of course, given the nature of the Destiny's mission and the time difference). The Gate itself and the DHD also look more primitive and much less advanced than what we've seen in the Milky Way or Pegasus galaxies.

It should be interesting...

I really haven't been paying much attention to the SGU stuff, so a lot of it was new to me. Not exactly dipping into the bottom of the barrel for the cast, are they? :D How did they manage to land Carlyle? Do they have black mail photos with him in a three way with Osama Bin Laudin and llama?

I'm definitely interested now.

Hey, yeah, that looks pretty cool. I was always a little puzzled by the switch in aesthetics. What little we saw of them in early SG-1 always did have that twisted, sinister, and eldritch look to it which was mysteriously replaced with sleek'n'clean, bright'n'happy Ancient Space Elves Ancients by the time of Atlantis.

Well, the ancients did have a civilization that lasted for millennia and spanned at least two galaxies with access to a third. I'm sure their technology, as well as their fashion and graphic design aesthetic, went through some significant changes.

The look I always missed was the look of the original gates themselves, like carved stone or an Egyptian sarcophagus.

I think the burning question is what horribly contrived, completely unnecessary sound effect will accompany the opening and closing of those doors?

My money's on grinding stone on stone, while the central boss spins around, followed by a metal sound as it opens.

The geiger style seems to slip in and out of favour, we see it all over the ancient timeline.

Before Atlantis here with Destiny and after atlantis in SG-1 in the final season.
But they also seemed to go through a build everything out of stone stage, as well as the intergalactic cities stage.

Either that or the Ancients weren't all that homogenous and each group had their own favoured styles that slipped in and out of fashion.

Hopefully it will turn out that the Atlantis Ancients were the "Star Trek" ancients, arrogance and stupidity and all.

Yeah, that seems to be a likely explanation.

Either way, it's definitely nice to see the earlier Ancient aesthetic back, though I never disliked the later one.

Interesting to see that a lot of the designs feature curves instead of angles.

If I remember correctly the curves are dominant in Ori designs while the Ancients prefered straight lines and angles.

So far I like the look of it.

Any idea how long until the new(old) ancient ship design is revealed? I kind of hope for a hybrid of Ori/Ancient looks there too.

Given the Destiny's age, I'm expecting some kind of hybridization too once the design goes public. I'm also curious about the shuttles' design and whether or not they'll act as a bridge between the Geiger-Ancient design aesthetic and the Puddle Jumpers.

The ship is revealed in this trailer which is the first that can truly be described as a proper trailer for the show after several TV spots.

Still loving what I'm seeing, so far I see Action, Fantastic special effects, A massive Nuke ripping a planets crust to shreds, Drama, Traditional stargate humour and new locations other than B.C. it's all here and more.

Can't wait.

Well, the Stargate transport ranges are slightly insane. Several billion lightyears.

Given that they gated to the ship from that Alphasite-ish planet, then we see what appears to be a FUCKING GIGANTIC explosion on what -I presume- is that same planet, I wonder if we're seeing a ZPM going critical, perhaps even the ZPM Odyssey was carrying around all that time.

Nothing else Earth has could possibly power a wormhole across BILLIONS of light years....

Interesting. The ship seems to be surrounded by a force shield of some type, but that may just be the medium it's travelling in.

Some spoilers that aren't in that trailer:
Spoiler
Icarus base contains some kind of static power supply built by the ancients to dial extremely long range stargate connections (nine chevrons, rawr) that is attacked by ha'taks - you can see one of them in that trailer. This forces an evacuation through the stargate (which has been connected to the Destiny) That is presumably the cause of the giant explosion - the base self destruct, or the attack.

According to the script information that's been released in the casting calls and such:
Spoiler
The characters speculate Lucians, but they don't really know, as they're forced to flee through the stargate. Presumably this plot thread will be addressed in some of the later episodes...
