If you're gonna partition the place I'd prefer for Miratian/Indhopali peacekeepers to occuppy the north of the Claim. That way we won't have to deal with Tian Xians in rifle range of Foreign Legion paratroopers, which is a recipe for disaster.

That would probably also be the easiest to do logistically as Tian Xia has likely been occupying the south since the start of negotiations. With Cascadia checking up on everyone, I also don't see the division of peacekeeping forces into different zones being problematic.SiegeTank wrote:If you're gonna partition the place I'd prefer for Miratian/Indhopali peacekeepers to occuppy the north of the Claim. Re: SD.Net World Redux Comment Thread VIII
I want to make one thing clear for everyone. Misteria is a communist nation and the UCSR will help them out as much as we can, unless they do something stupid - like fire on foreign assets involved with the evacuation. We want to help you, but if you fuck up - then we will leave you to the wolves, and I think we all know that without the Unions help Misteria doesn't stand a chance.
Pollux, my suggestion is that you find someone who can speak for the new government and ship them off to Stasograd. I'll even send a plane to pick them up and bring them there. Hopefully we can have a meeting with Secretary of State Parnell of Cascadia and President Shady and work out all the problems. You must realize that one mistake here could cost you greatly.
Also: Anyone who is unable to evac their citizens out of Misteria safely can expect the Union fleet to do it for them, just mention it somewhere, and I'll include it. If you don't feel like waiting, or you don't want to risk the wait, I'm willing to dispatch airlift where needed. As for the refuges, the UCSR will help by providing much needed supplies and if necessary I will dispatch boots on the ground to prevent any atrocities from happening and also to evacuate any foreign citizens that cannot be evacuated by their own government.

We will evacuate any foreign citizens out once the fleet arrives, if it becomes necessary I will deploy airlift and put boots on the ground to evac and protect any foreign citizens. I doubt even the NDF would dare fire on Union troops.RogueIce wrote: Though keep in mind if the NDF or anyone tries to overrun it I'll be very upset. But I'm confident the UCSR will take all appropriate steps to make sure foreign nationals, and embassies, are kept safe.

Tian Xia occupies the western and center portions of the Claim. The main staging base was on the river, as you recall. The Vineyards assaulted from the south. I'd suggest that Miratia take the northern portion, and Indhopal take the eastern portion.Raj Ahten wrote:That would probably also be the easiest to do logistically as Tian Xia has likely been occupying the south since the start of negotiations. Sounds fine to me. BTW, What exactly is in the zone has never been fully established has it? I suppose we can develop the blasted cities, open pit slave mining operations and wilderness as needed as the story progresses.
Edit: Shroom Man its not like we are carving up a failed state for our own aggrandizement here. We are simply carving up a failed state into smaller (hopefully) functional states for the sake of the people! Now to find out if they agree with us on that.....

On that note I'm still wondering how everybody got naval assets in place so fast. Well, Langley and Van Halstoff Territory are in the neighborhood of 2,000km from Misteria. I actually fired up the map and measured the distance from Misteria to a spot in the waters off Van Halstoff, calculating that my carrier group could get to Misteria in about 40 hours at 25 knots.
Note that I've said the Carson Beckett, coming from New Olympia on the other end of Veleria, will take several days to make the trip (I've not sat down and calced it out really).

Re: SD.Net World Redux Comment Thread VIII
While I'm pontificating on things, I might as well lay out what I think the biggest threats to the mission in Mortimer's Claim will be.
1.) The O'Donnell Clan. Mortimer came from this clan and they profited from his misrule; to them Mortimer's kleptocrat ways were "good graft" to the O'Donnell's. Mortimer also pulled most of his troops from his own clan to cement his power, so weapons will probably be availible. Most likely they will see the intervention as a direct attack on their clan threatening to end their perceived dominance of the CFR, if not destroy the clan outright. Convincing them otherwise will probably take a long time and mending fences between the O'Donnell's and other ethnic groups will probably be a full time job.
2.)Random militias and bandits. In parts of the claim I imagine there just is no government; hence why Tian Xia felt they needed to move in and provide some sort of security. We will need enough troops to protect local villages from the bandits and hunt down those that will not disarm.
3.)Each other. Let's face it, the peacekeepers are a team of rivals and if we get dragged down into political pissing matches the mission is doomed. That could lead to war between the mission's backers if there is a scramble for land. The mere fact that we were able to agree to stabilize Mortimer's claim together means we don't want that to happen.

Actually I wasn't trying to nail you specifically but rather using this paticular incident to make a point I've held back on generally which is that folks military assets seem to appear magically on stage whenever needed and with the slowdown everyone needs to actually bother to figure out how long it will take them to shift assets.Steve wrote:CmdrWilkens wrote:On that note I'm still wondering how everybody got naval assets in place so fast. Going in to a "for example" Stas' battle group couldn't possibly arrive in the area before tomorrow morning. Since they are putting to sea with hospital ships that are not normally on patrol this would indicate they are originating in USCR ports. With around 2,000-2,500nm to steam into position this would require roughly 100hrs or call it 4 days (IG) to get in position. The real life time is roughly 1 day for that and he posted at about 1030ish GMT or Oct 3rd in game so his ships would arrive around October 7th or sometime about 0500 GMT if they were making a speed run like that (the hospital ships might be slower for instance).

Actually that's Shady's deployment, and it was mentioned by me that it could not arrive before well over 24 hours pass. UCSR assets are not yet in place.Wilkens wrote:Going in to a "for example" Stas' battle group couldn't possibly arrive in the area before tomorrow morning.
I used an economic speed of 16 knots as baseline for calculations, which yields 3000 km (distance from UCSR East Coast to Misteria) in 5 in-game days, and 5 in-game days are around a 24 hour RL period right? I don't think anyone objects to ships going at 16 kt (even replenishment oilers can tolerate that speed).

I've run the calculation now. To give a basic figure, which would necessarily have to be added upon, I drew a straight line from the approximate position of New Olympia Naval Base to Misteria's inner waters and after determining the distance with Pythagorean Theorem I calculated for 17 knots travel speed (the USNS Mercy manages 17.5), bringing me to just over 129 hours transit time. However, since that course is impossible - the ship and escorts have to go around Tanvarika Peninsula - I think I'll tack at least half a day onto the estimate and say 6 days transit time. So IRL time the ship won't arrive until sometime tomorrow.Steve wrote: Note that I've said the Carson Beckett, coming from New Olympia on the other end of Veleria, will take several days to make the trip (I've not sat down and calced it out really).
