Student told to shush+Cops called=POLICE STATE COMING! [vid]
Not sure if this is the right forum for this, it just seems an interesting (read: Hilarious) bit of political thought.
I will agree that calling the cops was extreme. But to think your rights extend to blatant disrespect of school officials is....

Re: Student told to shush+Cops called=POLICE STATE COMING! [vid]
This kind of thing happened to me once.
What I'd be interested in hearing here is what the adults perceived. All the YouTube video tells us is that the student thinks he was being reasonable in repeatedly asking why he should be quiet and in insisting that he does not have to be quiet.
I'm not entirely sure the student is right in this case; it wouldn't be the first time a teen acts obnoxious and then walks away convinced he's in the unquestionable right.

His story makes no sense whatsoever. He was told to shut up for helping an assaulted student? Who had "something thrown at him?"

By helping he obviously meant he was talking to him about it. I see this kind of stuff happened all the time. That said, he does sound like he was being obnoxious about everything.

I can guarantee you we're not getting the whole story. This kid was probably helping a student who had something thrown at him but unless he's medically certified or a victim advocate he doesn't need to be there when the school staff are present.
If he was told to leave and refused then he was being disobedient. As for law enforcement involvement schools have the option to have a child removed to youth services if they are being disruptive and uncontrollable, so law enforcement provides that service.

Free speech also carries a responsibility to use it apropriately. You can't yell "Fire" in a crowd if there is no fire, you can't yell "Oh My God he's Got A Gun!" on an airplane for no reason, similiarly, you have to recognize when to shut nup and get out off the way after an adult is trying to de-escalate a situation between two students.
This kid obviously couldn't seperate himself emotionally from the relatively minor incident that was happening and is throwing down rhetoric more apropriate to an iranian talking about protests being disrupted.
he seems to want adult rights, but at the same time resents adult consequences for causing a public disturbance..
Hey at least he's learning to twist relevant sound situations and concepts to justify his own behavior, he's a budding Young republican.

Nonetheless, it's still pretty insane that police were called for a student not showing respect to teachers. I don't think the police were ever called at my highschool for fights or drugs or anything else, certainly not for any of the numerous disruptive kids. Whether or not the teachers had the right, it shows a complete lack of control on their part and a disregard for the cultural norms of Teacher-student interaction.
Had it been my former school, it certainly would led to further tensions between the student body and the teachers. That's typically good for neither party.

How would your school deal with a student who was being uncontrollable and they weren't able to contact the parents?TheKwas wrote:Nonetheless, it's still pretty insane that police were called for a student not showing respect to teachers. The school was probably trying to pass the buck. That way, if one calls the police, the police department gets saddled with whatever legal trouble that follows (or the majority of said trouble).Kamakazie Sith wrote:How would your school deal with a student who was being uncontrollable and they weren't able to contact the parents?TheKwas wrote:Nonetheless, it's still pretty insane that police were called for a student not showing respect to teachers. The same way they normally do. Put him in detention or something of that matter. Hell, pretty sure most of my teachers would have allowed the kid to storm off and walk home before calling the cops. If they didn't have to tackle him to the ground, I don't see the need for police muscle.Kamakazie Sith wrote:How would your school deal with a student who was being uncontrollable and they weren't able to contact the parents?TheKwas wrote:Nonetheless, it's still pretty insane that police were called for a student not showing respect to teachers. Detention is always a step taken before police are contacted. Also, your teachers allowing a kid to walk off is pretty damn stupid because not only are they allowing the child to walk into an element of danger but they are also making themselves liable for anything that happens to that child.TheKwas wrote: The same way they normally do. Teachers aren't allowed to get physical with a child, besides defending themselves, and they aren't allowed to simply let the child walk away. So, when a child continues being disruptive in a classroom such as acting out and continuing to be disobedient and the parents can't be contacted then the police will be called.

Indeed, and the student continues being disruptive with the princible? They do have other things to do besides watch a disruptive child.Thanas wrote:^The principal would detain him.

No. They were following policy. Teachers aren't allowed to get physical with a student besides maybe trying to physically escort them to detention. However, if the student continues to be disruptive and causing problems even when in detention than a suspension is in order so if the parents can't be contacted then the police will be called to transport the child to youth receiving or an equivalent facility.Pelranius wrote:

I'm having a hard time believing that there was no other course of action for the teachers involved. Like I said, I have never seen teachers need to go to such lengths and this kid doesn't seem to be violent or much more troublesome than the average 14year old being obnoxious. If you can't figure out a way to deal with kids like him without calling the cops, you're probably not suited to be a teacher.
EDIT:
EDIT:
And you don't think the police have better things to do besides babysit a 14 year old child? The Principal's office should have enough staff (at least a secretary or two) to deal with a disruptive child.Indeed, and the student continues being disruptive with the princible? Which is why I guarantee there's is more to this story than what the kid is telling us. Besides, it's the princibal that calls police and not the teacher. Though I will agree that perhaps the entire school staff isn't cut out to be in their position if they aren't able to deal with a child who is not extremely obnoxious and disruptive.TheKwas wrote:I'm having a hard time believing that there was no other course of action for the teachers involved. This kind of situation would be assigned a low priority and would be handled when the more serious calls for service had been completed. As for babysitting? There's no babysitting about it;
You pick the disruptive child up from school, and if necessary place them into handcuffs. Then you drive to the youth receiving facility and book them in. Then you complete the required reports. I'd estimate the entire process from start to finish would be about a hour (probably less for an experienced officer).

I already covered this Thanas. When those don't work and you're unable to get a hold of a parent then you can contact police who will transport the child to youth receiving.Thanas wrote:Then you phone the parent or place him into detention.Kamakazie Sith wrote:Indeed, and the student continues being disruptive with the princible?
