CoD4 is competent if you want good multiplayer that takes the Quake/Tacticool mish mash to its logical conclusion. The single player is shit, as warned.

Far Cry 2 is a good, if flawed, shooter. It's a bit formulaic and occasionally interupts the player with blatant "HAND OF THE WRITERS" bull shit. But just by being open world it's pretty much better than 99.9% of other FPS games.
