Odd display problem.
I've been having the wierdest problems with my display lately. It seems to have happened when I installed the latest drivers for my Nvidia Geforce 8600 video card a few weeks ago. It seems that whenever I watch media, be it on youtube or WMP, The gamma correction or brightness seems lower than it should be. I was watching the AR-558 episode of DS9 and I couldn't make out anyone's faces, and i've had similar problems with all my media. The brightness level on my monitor is already maxed out, and all cranking up the brightness in the Nview display does is give me a headache. Now i've noticed that when I installed the new drivers it also reset the gamma on all my installed games to an extremely low level. could that have had something to do with it?

Re: Odd display problem.
Hm, it sounds like it definitely is the driver - check if you're allowing per-application settings for gamma.

I am.
When I reset the gamma on all my games they stayed that way, most of them I just clicked the default button and it reset to normal.
The only problem is that i'm not sure how to adjust brightness or gamma with an WMP or media player classic file.

If you unallow per-application settings, then the desktop gamma will apply to everything except for full-screen games, if I recall. That's how you change brightness and gamma for everything else.

What the hell kind of monitor has it's brightness set to maximum?
The gamma settings you're looking for are probably in the software you're using, not the files. Your bizarre and possibly blasphemous monitor set up probably means you had to lower the gamma on everything to make it look not LIKE THE FUCKING SUN.
There's a lesson here.
Don't set your monitor brightness to 100.
Hell, my monitor can boil an egg at ten meters when set to 70.

Re: Odd display problem.
My monitor is really really old. If I set it to 70 everything looks too dark for me to make out details. It's been steadily crapping out for the past few years.
Also, even set to maximum, it doesn't really produce much heat. From what you're saying i'd expect it to be as hot as a lightbulb when it's really quite cool to the touch.

I hear light is radiation? God help you if it's a CRT.
Anyway, I just solved your 'display problem'. Your monitor is fucked. Get a new one. Problem solved.
