TR2N -- Tron Legacy Trailer/Test Footage (minor spoilers)
The "Tr2n" test footage seen at ComicCon (last year?) is now up on Yahoo. It's hard to tell comparing it to the shaky and poorly recorder one that was making the rounds on the interwets, but this one is an official release and seems a bit different. I think some of the backgrounds are slightly changed, but I may well be wrong. Also, the movie is apparently now called Tron Legacy.
Call me stoked with a poker, but I will see this no matter what.
I like how the bikes extend, lowering the rider in his seat, to apparently decrease the air resistance. I didn't notice that in the shaky trailer.

Re: TR2N -- Tron Legacy Trailer/Test Footage (minor spoilers)
It's still as interesting as the shaky one, with the benefit of better look. What I wonder is will they still keep the thoughts of what Tron had, but updated. Honestly, it's a good preview because it shows a few tiny little little things that make you wonder, but answers nothing.
I'm stoked to see it.

Oh, don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the footage. The shaky one (which I just now looked at again and linked to above) is way too blurry to compare with this new release, but aside from the title card, I think they may be identical. It's just a lot clearer.Ghost Rider wrote:It's still as interesting as the shaky one, with the benefit of better look. I believe so as well. The ending was exactly the same, and you just couldn't tell what they were doing aside from light bikes. I just like it as a preview because it's the same, clearer with visuals. It's the background I wonder specifically because they have Jeff Bridges as both the guy in the office/prison/whatever and then the light cycle opponent with his younger face.FSTargetDrone wrote:Oh, don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the footage. Re: TR2N -- Tron Legacy Trailer/Test Footage (minor spoilers)
If you pop open full screen, you can see that at about 35 seconds into the video, the Blue Rider seems to toss a techy-looking rod up in front of him of some sort as he jumps into the air (or it spontaneously forms in the air--hard to tell). The rod extends and morphs (as the rear wheel forms), becoming the center of his bike. It looks like some kind of "engine." Presumably, this is a callback to the handlebars that popped up out of the Light Cycle Game Grid in Tron which the riders grabbed, allowing the bikes to form around them.Ghost Rider wrote:I believe so as well. Also, notice that the riders' backs clearly "flow" into the rear of the bike at the 50 second mark. Likewise, the Blue Rider's bike extends forward here. This is seen again clearly at 1:28.
At 59 seconds, you can see some kind of display on the Yellow Rider's bike, right below and in front of his helmet. The Blue Rider's bike is identical.
Check out Flynn's room. Everything in that room seems to be from the Real World, but there is something blue glowing in his fireplace.
There are moving lights in the distance, behind and beyond the bridge the Blue Rider is on before he is dispatched. Also, lights are moving in the sky behind the Yellow Rider as he looks down with Flynn's place above and behind him.
I wonder if the fissure Blue Rider briefly escapes through is supposed to be the same one Flynn, Ram and Tron used to escape the Game Grid in Tron? I think it's obviously a callback to that one, but the fissure seen here is no longer a straight cut through the "wall" of the Game Grid. And the "geography" on both ends is obviously quite different now, if it is supposed to be the same place.
I like how the Disney Castle gets that sort of Game World glow at the beginning.

I did notice the bike forming from the rod. Thought that was a cool call back.FSTargetDrone wrote:If you pop open full screen, you can see that at about 35 seconds into the video, the Blue Rider seems to toss a techy-looking rod up in front of him of some sort as he jumps into the air (or it spontaneously forms in the air--hard to tell). Noticed that now. It's interesting how...real his place look, especially in contrast to the new computer world.Check out Flynn's room. Everything in that room seems to be from the Real World, but there is something blue glowing in his fireplace.
I'm hoping it's a harkening back to other systems. Really, Tron was fascinating that it was about programs and their interactions. It wasn't just avatars and what not. What I wonder is will they take this idea further, and hopefully a shitload better then the Tron Game/Comic does. The fissure is likely a little nod to fans, because the whole looks too wildly different. Though who knows. What I am wondering is the last line of the Blue Rider going on about a game. I am hoping they put a bit more glimmer to this one and not a rehash of MCP mark 2.

Re: TR2N -- Tron Legacy Trailer/Test Footage (minor spoilers)
Awesome, thanks. I'm downloading it now. It's 245 MB if anyone is interested.
Did you see the shimmering light playing over Flynn as he came over to the window? It's sort of like blurry, indistinct lines rolling over his face, kind of like the how the Castle looks at the beginning. Either that is some light from the Game World reflecting on him, or there is something else going on in his room. His place seems to be in a craggy, "natural-looking" structure. I wonder if Flynn's place really is a Real World environment within the Game World, or if it's some kind of simulation to look real for his benefit. The candle flames look strange too, like blobs of glowing light and not so much like a burning flame. The blue thing in the fire place is a strange incongruity. If it's something important and not decorative, why have it in the fire place? We just get a quick look at the room, though, so who knows. The seating pits below the floor are interesting.Ghost Rider wrote:Noticed that now. I'm imagining a situation that has Flynn spending a fair amount of time in the Game World and keeps the his place looking somewhat like a Real World apartment for his own comfort.
Yeah, those lights could be vehicles or any number of things. There is clearly a large cityscape beyond the bridge. Now, with the rise of the Internet and Web far beyond what was imagined when the first movie came out, I can see sort of computerized nations or states or other entities in a sort of parallel construction to that of the Real World.I'm hoping it's a harkening back to other systems. I think the implication is that the Blue Rider was somewhat new to the Game World. His line about the it being just a game sure suggests that, like, "hey, I didn't sign up for this!" Maybe it's a sort of situation where people from the Real World occasionally visit the Game World somehow, an expensive and exclusive sort of tourism like how people can pay the Russians to hitch a ride to the ISS. Flynn took over running Encom and the digitizing laser device was owned by the company. I'm guessing that or something like it is still the only way to and from the Game World. Perhaps it's expensive to use it?What I am wondering is the last line of the Blue Rider going on about a game. I am hoping they put a bit more glimmer to this one and not a rehash of MCP mark 2.
Re: TR2N -- Tron Legacy Trailer/Test Footage (minor spoilers)
From what I read in the TRON wiki, the yellow rider is CLU (Flynn's program from the beginning of TRON) who is tasked with making the digital world "better", but seems to decide to improve it by purging whatever he considers flawed. As for Flynn, he's supposedly trapped inside the digital world, and the main character will be his son, who will be digitized accidentally.
I'm definitely going to watch this, and it'll be 3D, wich makes it even better. Although I feel a bit of a letdown about the bikes not making 90º turns like in the original. I hope they reference the "old system" in the movie, just as in the TRON 2.0 game.

Something like that. It could be something to do with him being a literally creator versus a program. There were points that were taken out of Tron, that showed the programs have living quarters that reflected them and what not if they put the energy to it.
Now that would be fascinating. Not as a major part of the story, but to show that the System grew with the Web and computers of the time.Ghost Rider wrote:Yeah, those lights could be vehicles or any number of things. Now that would be a nice reminder of the original. That Flynn decided to use that as the ultimate game if you will.Ghost Rider wrote:I think the implication is that the Blue Rider was somewhat new to the Game World. As for the Wiki bit, I truly hope not with CLU being some sort of enforcer because that makes the writers forgetting the first film and what the purpose of Tron was, and just rewriting parts of story because they are being lazy.

To be fair, in the first movie, the Light Cycles only executed the 90º turns when they were on the Light Cycle Grid itself. The moment they left the grid they banked into turns like real motorcycles. They could also reverse!LordOskuro wrote:I'm definitely going to watch this, and it'll be 3D, wich makes it even better. As an aside, I was looking at the scene again yesterday and I just noticed then for the first time that there were crew members in the tank standing above the seated ones. You can see his legs in a few scenes.

They don't seem to have the light trails either. At least in the first movie.

Re: TR2N -- Tron Legacy Trailer/Test Footage (minor spoilers)
Only on the grid. There is another Cycle scene after the above and the trails (called "jet walls" in the movie) are never seen again.neoolong wrote:They don't seem to have the light trails either. At least in the first movie.
Now, the Cycles in the new trailer are using walls differently, of course. If you watch the new trailer again, take note of the Blue Rider as he is in the crevice. Just after the Blue Rider enters the crevice, the Yellow Rider's darkened bike can be seen leaping the gap above him, going from left to right at an angle. He then drops down in front of the Blue Rider and pops the wall out as soon as he hits the ground.
In the first movie, the Riders didn't seem to have any direct control over the walls. In the new preview, it seems they can turn them on and off: When the Yellow Rider has to pull up short at the crevice, he darkens his bike and the wall is no longer trailing from him when he pulls away.
Re: TR2N -- Tron Legacy Trailer/Test Footage (minor spoilers)
I'm rewatching TRON right now, and there are a few interesting bits. Firstly, CLU is yellow. Secondly, Flynn keeps telling him how he's supposed to be ruthless and unstoppable, the best program ever created. I can easily see how such a program might have evolved into some crazed enforcer.Ghost Rider wrote:As for the Wiki bit, I truly hope not with CLU being some sort of enforcer because that makes the writers forgetting the first film and what the purpose of Tron was, and just rewriting parts of story because they are being lazy.
And I think you have things mixed up. TRON was a network control program that the MCP wanted destroyed to prevent it from finding out about its appropiation of military software. CLU was a search program that Flynn tried to use to find evidence as to his ownership of the Space Paranoids game. And CLU was derezzed (or maybe even absorbed) by the MCP himself at the beginning of the movie.
A note on the riders being merged with the bikes, on the DVD extras from TRON, a designer states that the original concept was for the riders to have a sort of lobster-like segmented suit that merged them into the bike, but budget constrains prevented it.
And yeah, I know the bikes only made 90º turns in the grid, and that it was supposed to be a visual representation of the "snakes" game, but I liked it.

Re: TR2N -- Tron Legacy Trailer/Test Footage (minor spoilers)
CLU was basically the latest in a line of programs Flynn used. He was at best a one shot character to introduce what Flynn was doing AND to demonstrate the MCP's abilities. Using him as an antagonist is dumber the ressurecting MCP Sark. Really, if they are going that route, it smacks of laziness and sets a very poor precident.LordOskuro wrote:I'm rewatching TRON right now, and there are a few interesting bits. And Tron was meant to patrol the system that was independent of the MCP. The MCP distinctly states it didn't want such a program watching over him...for far more then military reasons.

Hm, I always took that little speech of Flynn's to be simply a pep talk!LordOskuro wrote:I'm rewatching TRON right now, and there are a few interesting bits. Firstly, CLU is yellow. Btw, have you ever played a Tron Light Cycle game using first person perspective? It's really damn hard! I can't remember if Tron 2.0 had first person views for the Cycles, but Armagetron does. And yeah, I know the bikes only made 90º turns in the grid, and that it was supposed to be a visual representation of the "snakes" game, but I liked it.
Anyway, the bikes in the new trailer, you can see 200+ numbers on there speed indicators in the high def trailer linked above. I wonder what those units are.
Re: TR2N -- Tron Legacy Trailer/Test Footage (minor spoilers)
I agree that using CLU is lazy and a bit stupid, but the clues to it being CLU are there (besides Word of God, of course).
I'd also like to recommend TRON 2.0 to poeple who like the movie or the setting. It is an average shooter, but the levels are quite imaginative, there are some interesting mechanics, and the aesthethics are very nice. Not to mention the sniper rifle is called the LOL.
I'm having some trouble referring to the new movie as TRON Legacy though, seeing how recovering the TRON Legacy McGuffin is part of the game.
Yeah, same here, but maybe the minds behind TR2N took it to mean something else. Or maybe it is just an excuse to have a CGI rejuvenated Jeff Bridges runing about.FSTargetDrone wrote:Hm, I always took that little speech of Flynn's to be simply a pep talk!
I'm playing through TRON 2.0, and yes, tried the first person view, it would be hard if the AI wasn't, to quote Yatzhee, pants-on-head retarded. It does have first person view, but if you try to enable the free camera to look around, the camera won't follow your bike when you turn, wich sucks.FSTargetDrone wrote:Btw, have you ever played a Tron Light Cycle game using first person perspective? Re: TR2N -- Tron Legacy Trailer/Test Footage (minor spoilers)
Yeah, I enjoyed Tron 2.0 too. I have to get around to playing it again soon.
Anyway, I may be reading too much into Flynn's brief appearance in the trailer, but when he sees the Blue Rider about to be killed, he certainly doesn't look happy about it.
I also noticed that in the new trailer, both riders also have that same face shimmering effect that Flynn does. Nothing else "physical" in the trailer (other than light sources) seem to have the shimmer.
Did anyone else get a end-of-2001-vibe from that room with the lighted floors? If there is a connection, I think it's merely a nod to old Bowman's room. Flynn's room also has a bed and what appears to be a roasted pig.

I intend to see this movie even if it's nothing more than a retelling of the game itself, if for no other reason than to let my inner Tron Fanboy out to play.

Terminator Salvation taught us that Hollywood has forgotten how to do computer masterminds properly. Let the MCP rest in peace in its 80's glory.
I must second the sentiment of the film creators, though. The original movie presented an "inside" view of games popular back then, like Pong, Pac-Man or Snakes. Nowadays, with games being so realistic, it's hard to create an "inside" equivalent on the new movie.

I was very apprehensive about this movie when I first heard about it, but man... I have to say that I am stoked to see it. It looks pretty cool with just the right amount of GRIMDARK to give it a little more serious of a feel for today's audience. And is Jeff Bridges getting some serious bank roll lately or what?

I really want this film to turn out to well, as I am very fond of both Tron and Tron 2.0. The trailer does look slick and I like how they have updated the visual style - though it's amusing to see that the "reflections-on-glass-surface" style has become the defacto high-tech look for sci-fi; Apple's marketing department is surely doing their job well.
I am also hopeful that this will mean a chance for Monolith to have a go at making a new Tron game - I'm sure they would do a much better job than whatever paint-by-numbers movie tie-in game studio that would be chosen otherwise.

Re: TR2N -- Tron Legacy Trailer/Test Footage (minor spoilers)
What is to tell? It opens with Flynns son looking all confused and sad at his fathers disapperence for the last 25 years. He enters the remains of the old broken down abandon flynns arcade(they got every detail right, the recognizer neon lights, flynns old office with his old ass computer he was hacking with in the first film, etc..) he comes upon a flynns token/home of tron.(which they handed out at the panel and I have three of.) he then picks it up and and spots the Tron arcade machine which all of a sudden comes to life and the light cycles pops up on screen. I can go on if you would like?
