The above solution only works if you have trouble reinstalling the game. I am not sure what this problem of yours is.

Has anyone got any advice for killing trolls? I played as Mordor initially and enjoyed having them stomp the enemy under the clubs but now I'm playing as Gondor and there's not much I can do to kill them other than feed in lots of men, even pike formations just get broken apart and sent flying.

Huge numbers of archers. Seriously, that's the best way to deal with trolls. Mind you, I was personally annoyed at the weakness of Gondor's archers, especially compared to Uruk-Hai crossbowmen, so I checked out the unit stats and found that the "ap" characteristic was turned on for Uruk-Hai crossbowmen and turned off for Ithilien Rangers (as well as many other elite archer units like the Elven Eldar Archers). In fact, the Uruk-Hai crossbowmen were the only archer units in the game which had this attribute as far as I could tell. I didn't think that made sense so I added the "ap" attribute to numerous high-end archer units. As a result, it's easier for my archers to kill trolls than it might be for yours.
However, I've seen the same strategy employed with lower-end archers without the "ap" attribute and it still works. You just need ridiculous numbers of archers (like 8 full units). That's usually enough to take down trolls before they can reach your lines. It will also do serious damage to their other advancing infantry, of course.

If Securom is the problem, Wautd, simply use a no-CD crack and you should be fine. This is obviously dependent on the laws in your country regarding said cracks.

Ironically, I had a trojan attack a couple of days ago. Problems with securom occured after a full virus scan so it light have to do with that
edit: crack got it working again. Time to squash some orks
Awesome. I just happened to check that forum last night for an update, so perhaps I missed it? I was also pissing around in custom battles too - does anybody else think that the bows in that game are godawful deadly? Not that I mind - I was playing as the Silvan Elves.
Third Age has done for Medieval II what Total Realism did for Rome, IMO.
Over the past month I've started games as Mordor, High Elves, and Dwarves, but I got fed up with trying to get my games to work in WINE. Now I'm on Windows 7 and I haven't reinstalled it yet, but it's high on my list.
Re: killing trolls. High AP definitely helps. If you are fighting them in an open field battle, bring ballistas. They can kill a mountain troll with one shot. It helps to be the attacker, since the defender AI just takes up a position on the field and sits there. This gives you forever and a day to pepper the army with missile weapons. Two units of ballistas will drop a unit of trolls from 12 to 4 in no time. Then you can mop up the remainder with a single unit of hard-hitting infantry like Axemen of Erebor. The only situation for which I haven't developed a solution is when they are part of a defending force in a siege. You can't reliably engage them with missile weapons so they have to be tackled in the close confines of the city streets.
I actually thought they made trolls too resistant to arrows. It's pretty silly that a lone troll can withstand a volley at point-blank range from an entire unit of longbowmen. It's also a bit aggravating that the promised "evil factions never die" bug fix in the 1.2 patch was not actually fixed, but that's a fairly simple fix: you just open up descr_sm_factions.txt and turn on the "has_family_tree" attribute for england, france, and hre (they represent Mordor, Isengard, and the Orcs of the Misty Mountains respectively).
Nevertheless, I'm still a really big fan of this mod, and with the "evil factions can finally die" fix in place, it's worth playing a campaign.

Somewhat perversely, I've held off reinstalling M2TW and its expansion (which were lost with the great hard drive death of March 2009) on the basis that if I do I might get so immersed in it again I'll never play Empire (which has a 1.4 patch coming at the end of this month, which may finally fix it?).
I always liked the idea of a LotR type game, though, so ... hmmm.

Missile weapons are definitely the way to go against trolls: in my current game as dwarves, I typically equip my armies with twenty catapults or so plus four units of crossbowmen. Trolls stop being a problem, and a 20 catapult salvo can send half the enemy army into panic when aimed right
It's kind of an exploit, though.
