This is what i get for going on a 2 day bender. I come back and the place is fire damaged. I'm gonna start living on american time so i can see these things as they happen and not just a load of green bells beside posts already dying down.

I agree that it should not have been as personal as it was in some parts.

There are a few things that have made me VERY upset, so much that I had trouble sleeping on Saturday night and had an awful dream about it (PM me if you want to know. Generally, it concerns Kelly).

Basically, several isolated incidents occuring at the same time, and tempers flaired enough that some lashed out at others, and everything combined into a massive war.

But now it's cooled off, so we need to drop it and go on with our lives.

And to those (especially n00bs) that are thinking/suggesting that this will spell the end of SD.Net: shut the fuck up. This was just a really hot flame war that was only regulated to Off Topic. Nothing will happen if we just forget about it and move on with our lives.

Every time something like this happened at The Gundam Project, the morons would go nuts, predicting doom for the board, and lamenting for "The Good Old Days".

Heh. I remember when Krakenhaus suggested shutting the board down because of all the flamewars, then someone flamed him for it. :D

Then a week later, Mark chose to close the whole thing down. :(

Well, Mark shut down the board for bandwidth reasons primarily.

You were on GP? Who were you, and were you on GundamWatch, too?

I was Spanky The Dolphin on both, of course.

I'm not closing anything down. Instead, I choose to ask people to be a little more considerate of each other here. It's one thing to flame each other over something as silly as whether Gandalf could kick Yoda's ass or even to disagree about hot-button issues like abortion, but when we start forming personal resentments and running around trying to undermine each other, that's unacceptable behaviour.

The only conceivable benefit of this weekend's activity might be to serve as a case study for some sociologist studying Internet webboard psychology.

Just to keep it clear, Mark Simmons (the admin of GP) didn't close it down because of the flamewars, but because he no longer had any time for it. It waas just an interesting coincidence that that particular flamewar took place so soon before the end of the board.

Not on GW. On GP, I was registered as Gyan-san. I only made a post or two, so good luck remembering me. :)

This was nothing, I've been involved in a flamewars on a board I ran that carried over into real life and resulted in violent beatings. I've had one on another board that resulted in people stalking me and talking shit about me, and eventually ended with the worthless shitbags being loaded into an ambulance. I've recieved more death threats than I can count and been slandered in more ways than you can imagine, but you know what, I don't really give a fuck anymore. I have a life away from the computer, and until people start intruding themselves on that life, why should I care? As I've said elsewhere, when people get behind the anonymity of their keyboards, their balls and ego grow bigger and their brains shrink. I recognize this syndrome which is why I don't give a flying fuck about 99% of internet flamefests.

Flamewar? This was a spitting match. I've seen flamewars that brought down entire internet alliances and crumbled mutliple factions. Only to lead to excrusions over a period of a year.

There wasn't a flamewar at the time, but something similar to this happened on ASVS while back

I concur.

Check out astronomy newsgroups for a good example.
"Right now we can tell you a report was filed by the family of a 12 year old boy yesterday afternoon alleging Mr. Michael Jackson of criminal activity. A search warrant has been filed and that search is currently taking place. Mr. Jackson has not been charged with any crime. We cannot specifically address the content of the police report as it is confidential information at the present time, however, we can confirm that Mr. Jackson forced the boy to listen to the Howard Stern show and watch the movie Private Parts over and over again."

I don't consider it a flamewar unless there are lawsuits involved. THOSE are flamewars.

If you want to see flamewars at their finest, check out alt.flame.

If it's still up, that is. I haven been there in more than a year.

I refused to watch the horror unfold. I took one look at the posts Ted were throwing up in the Zaia thread, and guessed that the thread would be headed into the sewer in a matter of minutes. I elected not to bother with the thread.

As far as flamewars go, what I saw didn't seem that virulent. On another board, somebody called another guy a wifebeater and a bunch of other nasty things. That was far uglier.

By far the most vicious and virulent debate turned flamewar was the epic battle/debate between fans of Michigan State football over the tenure of ex-head coach Bobby Williams. Most fans were quick to break down into Keep Bobby camps and Fire Bobby camps. Let's just say racism became an issue in the debate, and all hell broke loose shortly after. Things managed to get uglier than the Clinton impeachment scandal.

This? This was nothing. I've seen flamewars over the Hart Screwjobthat were bigger than this, easily.

We're not trying to compete with those people.

I like to think of this as a place where people can violently disagree about things without building up personal hate-feuds with each other (with a few well-deserved exceptions like Arminius, Patkelly, etc). What I saw crossed that line. Now let's please stop talking about it.
