Voyager Prime is just a repaint of the first movie figure.

And he's a fine figure, don't insult him.

My girlfriend has Voyager Prime. He's very meh, but I may get him one of these days just to have a Prime of about the right size for my 'cons to kick around. ;)

Certainly wouldn't pose him with my (taller) BB though. :P

Although these are still WIP, Voyager Optimus Prime does look better repainted:

As does Devastator:

He still carries half his altmode on his back. If they could manage a transformation as nice as Legends Prime's on that tiny scale it seems odd that they couldn't do something similar on a larger figure.

(And yes, I know that the Voyager Prime mould is from the first movie while the Legends version was made with the benefit of two years' worth of hindsight; it's still annoying that they got it so wrong the first time around.)

EDIT: And I find it ironic that a picture of Supreme-class Devastator was used in a response to my "Legends are better" comment.

You must be referring to the fact that legends class Devastator can transform into individual robots, and that Over Load is available to complete the set. Well, when I finish with my Optimus Prime (I am looking for suitable henges to use to collapse his hood and place it on his arms, and placing the front wheels near his feet), I will make every module (vehicle) of Devastator able transform into the robot forms. Now how could all of this work possibly be better than buying a legends class that is supposedly better? Well, lets look at Legends Jetfire. His cockpit just folds behind him in robot mode, looking like a giant dick coming out of his back. His small size makes him almost impossible to rebuild. And although He and Legends Prime do combine,
Image
I personally think it looks like ass. And don't tell me that I put Jetfire on upside down, because it looks even worse.
Image
I guess it really depends on your personal opinion. I also intend to get Leader Class Jetfire and modify him to combine with Voyager Prime. They do appear to be the same scale (as opposed to leader class Prime), so this might work. I'll post pics as I progress, though this will take time.

I never meant to imply that all Legends are better than their larger counterparts, just that some are surprisingly good and that some of the larger toys (Voyager Prime, Devastator) are surprisingly bad given how much easier it is to fit a more complex transformation into a larger package.

Man, all those toys look like shit. They also don't look like any fun to play with (i.e. every Transformer toy ever), which is like, the defining factor of a good toy.

GI Joes were the best toys. Plenty of accessories, full articulation, lots of vehicles which for the most part did cool things (and the very least could roll). I didn't have many transformers toys growing up (I think I just had Starscream, Kup, and some weird Japanese-only combiner set that I got when I was a kid from my Dad, in fact), because I was obsessed with Cobra figures.

Anyway, the Leader class toys are awesome because they actually do stuff and move around. Not to mention being huge helps.

GIjoe was certainly the benchmark toy of the 80's for the reasons you listed and also interchangeability with just a screwdriver. :D

Yeah, the only flaw I could think of was the elastic band between the upper and lower body. On one or two of my action figures it snapped, and there was nothing I could do but stick them together with Blutack. Not exactly the best solution. Luckily it wasn't one of my favorite Cobra guys. I think it was the one who had some sort of eagle wing .... thing, on his back.

Well, the toys pictured are Voyager Prime and Supreme Devastator, which were both kinda crap, and Legends Prime, which while good for its size and price is still a Legends-class toy, and therefore has to make a lot of compromises. The Scouts and Deluxes are, for the most part, much better than what's been shown in this thread, and some of the Leaders (Leader Prime in particular) are pretty amazing.

I never liked GI Joes much as a kid, though. They were just a bunch of little plastic army guys; I never really saw the point of them.

Oddly enough the pictures in this thread are all showcasing the worst figures of the line.

But even as that may be, in my opinion the Transformers Animated line was, over all, a much better line in terms of Transformers toys that you can actually play with, re: easy and/or quick yet fun to transform, good posability, lots of personality in the sculpt, etc.

Oh man, all you needed was braces rubber bands to fix them, and the aforementioned screwdriver. And it sounds like the Cobra Falconer who's name eludes me... Raptor maybe, or perhaps Nemesis Enforcer? (The most awesome bad guy name ever by the way. :D )

I didn't know that, but I was something like 10 years old at the time he broke, and I hadn't been fitted with braces yet, so I had no clue.

You're right the first time, it was Raptor:-

He was never one of my favorites because I thought his backpack was goofy, and he had no weapon.

My favorite all time Cobra was Night Viper

The RotF line got me back into collecting, which I haven't done since G2. So I'm pretty impressed with it so far. I've liked every Scout, Deluxe, and Voyager I've picked up, and I'm very impressed with the concept and execution of the Human Alliance line.

That Devastator is SO not worth $100 though. :)

The ones I have that are the most fun to play with are Ransack (the biplane Decepticon), Mixmaster (complex but insanely posable, scary-looking, great alt mode, big gun), and HA Bumblebee.

Ransack is a great concept... if you have any sort of quality control at any point along the line. Now he just snaps apart when you look at him funny.

As do most Transformers toys of the past, oh, ten years. It seems like they peaked engineering and quality-wise sometime around Beast Wars.

Quality, maybe, but I can't give too much credit to Beast Wars' engineering; most of the figures were either shellformers or "stand up the animal, swap the heads" deals. The engineering has gotten much better since then.

Although some of the Beast Machines Vehicons hold up surprisingly well. I'd still put Deluxe Jetstorm ahead of more recent toys like, say, Universe Cyclonus, despite its age.

Part of good engineering is also knowing what sort of complexity your budget allows without cutting into tolerances. Again, Ransack may be an expertly crafted figure with terrific design, but that means not very much at all when the arms are so spindly they fall out of their sockets.

My Ransack is fine. I popped the arms out once or twice when I was figuring out the transformation, but they popped right back in. It's possible you got a bad one. Mine is pretty much fine unless I held him by one arm and shook him or something.
