Ridley Scott confirmed to direct.
I'm not sure how to take that. At least we know it should look good.
I think he pretty much had to direct this to give it some credibility or else it would have the stink of the past shitfests in the franchise weighing it down.

Still, I really don't want a prequel.

Firstly, language is not math. Popular usage, for good or worse, does count. Secondly, the original question I read was "Why is it popular" not "Why did it become popular". I agree that it's a bit of circular logic, but popularity often thrives on circular logic, that is, on appeals to popularity. Something can be popular because it was popular to begin with (yeah, unnerving).
Uh... what? Something can't be popular because it was popular to begin with. It has to become popular to be popular, it can't start out popular.

Please, don't be naive. The reason 'Xenomorph' stuck was because it was a cool-sounding word that most moviegoers had no idea about its meaning. It could have been a made up word and it would have stuck too.
i.e. Nerds want to sound cool and smart and in 'the know' about their favorite franchise.

I vote we call them predators, since they prey on people.

I second the motion but amend that we have to be specific to avoid confusion. The banana headed ones are predator aliens, and the guys who throw the frisbees are Alien predators.

I think I'll just call them Yer Mom.

At least goddamn Inseminoid probably had the good grace to not bother us with either dumb Gormans spouting dumb names, or Vasquezes who are menstruating all over disagreeable nomenclature.

(For the record... the nerds might have been trying to sound cool and smart by using an alternate name that was used in the movie, and because the term xenomorph is a term for 'alien' that hadn't yet been used in other sci-fi franchises. I don't know if that is more or less nerdy than going on a nerd rage and making their own super awesome special name for the goddamn things to sound even cooler and smarter and even MORE in the KNOWER about their favorite franchise!)

Ridley Scott being attached gives me some hope. He probably has at least some idea why people liked Alien, and he's probably got enough personal clout to ward off some executive meddling.

You are quite right, and a mistake I shouldn't have made. Mea culpa. Or perhaps I should say...συγγνώμη?

The extras that came with the Alien Quadrilogy, especially the old Laserdisc portion, seem to indicate that he's got an idea although I'm leaning more towards the "Yeah, I sort of remember doing that." He did release the special edition so he's still got some idea of what looked good with the original movie. I doubt he's lost his talent for setting up a scene. Of course there's what happened with Kingdom of Heaven - that got chopped to pieces on the editing room floor - I hope that was just a hiccup.

The real question is: will Scott bring back Giger?

Hopefully, and if not, at least they should try to more closely emulate his style.

I don't see why he wouldn't. He's not an idiot.
