Space Hulk, 2009

Post by Bob the Gunslinger »

Games Workshop has just announced a new version of their old board game, Space Hulk. It looks very detailed, but that price is just brutal. I hear the game is fun to play, but I would like to hear your opinions, too.

Is anyone thinking of buying this game?

Since my brother owns the original Space Hulk game and it's expansions its not a priority for me. The original is a fun, tense game where a limited number of marines attempt to accomplish their mission objectives while the opposing player has a limitless number of genestealer reinforcements with which to try and stop him. The marines are superior to the 'stealers but can still be killed, there's a timer to ratchet up the tension and speed things along, and time favors the stealers as more and more reinforcements can be brought to bare.

$99US is almost a reasonable asking price for a game that size, but the shipping is probably ungodly.

The shipping is free. GW has pretty much followed Amazon with all shipping being free over a certain amount, which I think is usually $15, but for the month of August, all standard shipping is free.

It's the taxes that bring the pain.

I think there have been 2 incarnations of Space Hulk before now: one had standard marines with various bits of equipment vs the genestealers the other, the most recent boxed version, had the Terminators. I'm not sure if the first one was just a white dwarf supplement or a special game they made to show that just occasionally the space marines do function as marines in space.

I think the boxed game was good fun, there was decent balance between the sides, and it was certainly possible to kill the terminators as a crafty genestealer player, while it was also possible to mow down hordes as the terminators.

If one plays 40K, that price is actually fantastic. 10 plastic terminators retail for $100, and then you throw in a librarian terminator ($20 blister), 20+ genestealers (probably another 60 or so) and then the actual game itself.

Just sayin'.

from here you can see what the game looks like, what is included, some pictures of painted game pieces and links to articles about the game. There is even a novel based on Space Hulk available on the website. From the chatter on Warseer, it looks like the game will probably sell out completely in the next month or so and is exceeding GW's expectations on pre-orders alone.

Considering that Fantasy Flight Games is coming out with another Warhammer-themed game in September, I wonder if the competition will hurt their sales, or if GW will end up handing over the reins of Space Hulk to them.

I am definitely going to be buying one of these board games, as well as Arkham Horror, sometime in the next month. I will try to write a review here if anyone's interested.

Chaos in the Old World is nothing like Space Hulk. Even a cursory look at the website info would be enough to tell you that.

FFG won't be able to make Space Hulk unless GW changes their contract with them, as FFG has stated they aren't allowed to make any Warhammer (40k) games based around using minis.
