Apple Trailers

Looks a bit silly but has prospects as a sci-fi romp, even if i have my doubts about blue half naked tribesmen on Pterodactyls fighting modern equipment and it would have been nice if the plants looked more alien. Spacecraft look pretty damn good mind you. But what are your thoughts?

Not as big of a leap as I thought in terms of effects. A lot more polished and nice lighting but still looks like a really good game trailer or something, not sure what he waited for or what technique he pushed for this? Motion capture actors on set? If he made this level of CGI cheaper that's cool, can raise the scope of future movies.

Congratulations James Cameron on matching what Blizzard has been doing for a few years now. However it looks damn shinny. If they get that kind of 3D quality on the cheap(IE less than 100 million a picture) expect to see lots more use of it for the simple reason that film on location gets more and more expensive. When the next Rob Schneider movie is filmed in Avatar-o-vision we know the tech has become mainstream enough.

Looks like a decent sci-fi flick. Honestly it looks like that Final Fantasy movie with the quality cranked up a couple notches in terms of effects.

I'm not sure if I can take the blue elves seriously. Looks like it should be interesting, though.

Can someone explain WTF the movie is about? The trailer really didn't explain much, so it seems only those previously familiar with the idea have a clue what it's about.

At the very least, it's nice to finally get a good look at the film's content after such a long no-show.

In the end I think it all looks pretty good. The aliens themselves (which was the movie's main make-or-break factor) seem particularly well designed and expressive. The only thing I'm still iffy about is the 3D presentation, though.

That's because it's a teaser.

The movie can be pretty much summed up as Dances with Wolves on another planet.

Avatar (not The Last Airbender) looks like a versus between Warcraft and Final Fantasy. (Kaena The Prophecy is the movie both Final Fantasy movies wished they were.) While the CGI is awesome the trailer doesn't show anything that makes want to see it in the theater. (At this point it would be a rental for me.) I think it is fairly telling about the mass market appeal at this point in time when you search Youtube for avatar trailer and most of the stuff is about The Last Airbender. After all the secrecy I was expecting something besides blue elves. :wtf:

I have to admit that I'm surprised at how incredibly lame this looks. I expected more from Cameron. The effects are beautiful, but they're being used to make cheesy aliens fight cheesy Matrix-walkers over a planet seeded by Ray Bradbury's tears. I'm afraid the only thing Cameron will reinvent in this movie is the noble savage cliche.

Who knows...maybe if I keep my expectations low enough I'll be pleasantly surprised. Once I get around to Netflixing this movie.

You are sadly mistaken. This is like saying the latest direct to video DC animated film is the movie Finding Nemo wished it was.

What does a comic book superhero movie have to do with a family Disney movie? Kaena is a fantasy movie that was better than either of the Final Fantasy movies, especially Advent Children. There is no excuse for the crappy camera angles that movie had when you can place the camera anywhere. Cool a fight scene. Lets cut to a sweaty armpit 15 times and obscure the actual fight as much as we can. I also found the story of Kaena far more interesting than either Final Fantasy movies.

Back on topic, does anyone else get the Battle for Terra vibe from the Avatar trailer?

Shit. I just found out the advance screening was only for a few select scenes totaling about 15 minutes. :( Forget that! I'd rather wait to see the whole thing. I'll probably go see District 9 or the Hurt Locker then.

Yes. In fact, it's almost impossible not to compare this teaser trailer to Battle for Terra's trailer because they are so similar in tone, theme and content. "Oh noes, the human sympathizes with the space natives! Can he save them from the evil technology-using humans?"

This appeared to be a "humanity's children revolt" kind of story, where humans move to another planet, but need machines and such to survive - they create some sort of adapted hybrid that can subsist naturally...and there's the inevitable revolt/revolution.

However, I'll wait to see more. Given that I'm writing about similar themes in my works, I'm naturally a bit curious to see how this is executed.

Yes... but I was going more for "making pretty great CGI movies" except Blizzard makes little one minute jobs for half a million. While James has managed to make a hundred and twenty minute one for tens of millions.

Yeah, but this time, the APU-esque walkers have canopies. :P They also cradle their weapons.

As I said over on SB.com: This looks like Ferngully with guns and mechs. From what I've seen from the trailers, I'm predicting a heavy handed, preachy environmental/anti-expansion/colonization theme ala Star Trek IX, with a heavy dosage of contrived conflict, a side order of over the top 'noble savages', and an appetizer of military incompetence so bad it literally kills brain cells to watch it.

With any luck, I'm wrong. I will reserve final judgment for when it comes out.

David Cameron has been reduced to making a US version D-War. :x

How can alien elves on giant birds successfully fight toe to toe against human space marines equipped with Gatling cannons, rockets, VTOL craft, fighter jets, and combat armour?! :x

Why, with the power of Love, Friendship, and a military that's so incompetent that it couldn't find its ass with both hands and a roadmap. (tm). Don't you see, silly man, that the power of the heart will always triumph over the autocannon, the tank, and the missile? :x
