Two years later Ron Moore and David Eick came up with their own 'reimagining' of the concept which became the critically acclaimed but often ratings challenged cable series that served as the network's cornerstone show for the past few years.
nBSG was 'often ratings challenged'? Hmm. Didn't know that. I still say it was mostly great bloody television, despite it's flaws and weak ending.

A quick Google search brought me to this webpage.
In the meantime, take some time to glance over historical numbers for the series which I’ve included below.

Averages (coverage household rating)

Miniseries – 3.5
Season 1 – 2.38
Season 2 – 1.97
Season 3 – 1.39
“Razor” TV Movie – 1.20
Season 4 – 1.60

Season Premieres (coverage household rating/viewers)

Miniseries, part 1 – 3.2 (3.90M)
Miniseries, part 2 – 3.8 (4.46M)
Season 1 – 2.6 (3.05M)
Season 2 – 2.6 (3.05M)
Season 3 – 1.8 (2.16M)
Season 4 – 1.6 (2.14M)
I don't know what's considered "good", "fair", or "poor" ratings for a show, so those numbers don't mean a whole lot to me.

Well the drop in quality from Season 2 seems to reflect those numbers, though the low numbers for the Season 3 premiere compared to Season 2 are surprising.

Are the '2.14M' numbers millions of viewers?

Because holy shit, that means more people watch TORCHWOOD than watched nBSG. :)

As someone mentioned on the page linked above, those numbers don't reflect people watching it online, via iTunes and such. I saw every episode, but I didn't see every episode on TV. Some of them I saw on the SciFi site and/or DVD.

So what? People watch shit like Torchwood that way too. Those viewing figures suck donkey balls; nearly 10 million people watched the Blakes 7 finale, and that was a show made of cardboard in a tiny country with no money!

For a broadcast network, those numbers would be apocalyptic, canceled-after-four-episodes ratings. For a niche cable channel like SciFi, they range from "not bad" to "weak".

Ratings were never that good for BSG. Most people I know tended to download episodes (legally or illegally...take yer pick). Friday nights and all, you kinda want to go out and do things.

What's really damning isn't the raw numbers themselves, but the trend they show. With only two exceptions, they continue in one direction - down. Downloading and online streaming won't account for that.

They were as good as they would get for a sci fi show in that timeslot. Face it there just isn't a huge scifi audience, BSG was touted as the #1 scifi show even against Stargate SG-1.

And STILL tiny numbers. Scifi is not actually popular who knew

Also nthose fuckers kept messing up any regualr following with seasons on hiatus and rescheduled releases and what not, at least in the US :wtf:

Not to nitpick, but you'll see an overall downward trend looking at the ratings of virtually any television series. It's just how the medium works.

Are there any figures for DVD sales? Because that might also assist in determining how successful Battlestar was. The way the medium has changed in the last decade, let alone the last few years, I have to question how relevant TV ratings are when a lot of people simply download their favourite shows and/or buy the DVD boxsets rather than watch it on TV. People who are more knowledgeable over media and TV studies and so on might have a better insight into this matter.
