I can only assume it's an incredibly convoluted way to say "desert culture". Probably the latest buzzword in gasbag circles.

Thar refers to blood feud and shame based cultural values, which the academic who coined the phrase, differs significantly enough that the use of terms like "honour" or "face" are inaccurate and misleading. The phrase has been floating around for a few years.

From one Nordic person to another, Julhelm, could you please elaborate by what you mean with your statement about "Nordic" values? I'm rather interested to hear what they are, or how you view them. After all, the cultures within the Nordic countries are rather diverse, despite their close ties, and are not without their share of darker elements.

It would primarily be the way family works here, where we tend to strive for individualism and families are not ruled by patriarchs. Also we're a lot less religious here with less religious interference with society than you'd find in, say catholic countries or the middle east.

At least that's my perception of our core values. Of course we have darker elements in our culture as well, but that's an ongoing battle to get rid of those too, right?

So while it sort of describes Arab-style "desert culture," it can also be used to describe the demented feuding culture you get in the rural Balkans, or the swaggering machismo culture you get in some parts of Latin America, or what most of Western Europe was back in the Dark Ages to one degree or another.

Uh, yes? In the same way that calling a black guy a "nigger" is an invitation to a fistfight, but calling a white guy a "nigger" will just seem odd, or perhaps humourous depending on the context?

Frankly, Julhelm sets off my crypto-racist alarms pretty loudly, especially with this "Nordic views and values" talk. "Nordic" is an ethnic term, after all. This isn't the first time he's set off that particular alarm, either.

I could've said "european views and values" or "western views and values" but that wouldn't be correct because in Italy and Spain they might not have the exact same views as we do up here in the north. Would it had made a difference if I used the word "scandinavian"?

And yes, I do regard people who adher to Thar-type traditions as inferior to our culture, but is has absolutely nothing to do with race. What I want is for them to evolve so they can be like us and leave the past behind them.

It would have made a difference if you had not used a word which refers to an ethnicity. It's like saying "white values", which is why you did (and continue to) set off my crypto-racist alarm.

No I never said that, you slimy little fuckface. I said we should deport the worst of the fundies because they have nothing to contribute to society. There are lots of people from, for instance, asian nations who have degrees and can be productive that we should give those citizenships to instead of handing them out to the middle eastern equivalent of the Duggars.
